Hello, true believers! Welcome to Negative World's newest RPG-centric Club Hub, springing off the heels of the Fire Emblem Club. Way back when, Nintendo Power introduced a monthly walkthrough / in depth Role Play Game section (right around the beefiest SNES RPG era), but since they aren't around anymore to use it, Negative World will bring it out of the ashes, dust it off, and roll with it (two things of note: #1, this is not in reaction to Nintendo Force Magazine at all -- I know that because I thought of it in the shower this morning, so THERE; and #2, I just looked up "Epic Center RPG" on Yahoo, and there is apparently another RPG-based site that has that, ugh. I guess we're looking at a "Ghostbusters" / "Real Ghostbusters" thing now... Whatever..).

For anyone who grew playing SNES RPGs, and were a fan of them, they surely resonated to the point where they still hold office as some of your favorite games of your entire videogame life, systems, generations, and decades later. The NW Epic Center (run primarily by myself, with the aid of some special friends occasionally) will help to expose some of those games that didn't quite get the recognition they deserved, and also to relive some of the greatest games EVER as we play through them again -- together -- and open up a whole new dialogue on these lost treasures.

Next up..

Chrono Trigger is held by many (myself included) as The Greatest RPG of All Time, pun not intended. It is a benchmark title in the genre, and even after 20 years the game is discussed daily and held in high regard, even in the face of juiced-up, HD "masterpieces." Is simpler sometimes better? Sure, but we're not talking "Dragon Warrior" simple here; we're talking 16-bit perfection at its finest. I'm personally a bit worried about pursuing this game once more; it's been a long time since my last jog through it, and I'm afraid I might have the rosiest pair of glasses that any shot of nostalgia could ever produce. We find out later this month, for better or for worse. (C'mon, it's gonna be fine -- we're talking Chrono Trigger here!! THE BEST, JERRY, THE BEST!!)

Sunday, August 30th marks the start of Week 1 (if you prefer to start your own quest AFTER Sunday, like Monday, or Tuesday, or Wednesday, thats fine!). Golden Sun ran 6 Weeks. GameDadGrant will be our DUNGEON MASTER for this one, and we figure the playthrough to run about the same length. Less than two months. I'm told the total quest should last you between 20 and 30 hours.

See ya soon!!

So I wanted to catch-up on this after being away for a week. Turned on my Wii only to realise that It was my old Wii that had all my VC games on it. I sold the console to my parents and left the SD card in it. I added my internet connection to my current Wii, did system updates etc and now all I get is an error 401 every time I try to connect to the shop. I tried the connection test and it worked fine. I dunno what to do :(

@Cube191

Can someone help Cube out?
04/04/13, 01:34
I've never had a problem like that. You probably already tried it, but maybe try restarting the router and then the Wii? Maybe the signal is weak and the shopping channel is timing out.
04/04/13, 04:51
Finish this week up tomorrow. Probably level everything up to 5 before proceeding.
04/05/13, 00:48
My wii internet connection randomly started working today :)

I got my butt kicked on the way in to the Castle, so am back at Nicos in the forest. I should be avle to catch up more at the weekend.

@Cube191

My house whipped through Week 2, and Week 4 (is short) so you can POSSIBLY be back on track by mid-next week, depending on how much you put on it. How is your buddy (and our buddy) Fink doing?
04/05/13, 01:41
@Mr_Mustache

Fink?

I've played this games more times than I can remember. I should be able to catch up quickly. I might even start playing 2-player with a friend of mine as he has never played before.
04/05/13, 01:47
@Cube191

Yeah, DrFinkelstein! He hasn't finished Week 1 yet either (I think..). I hope you guys are (comfortably) caught up soon!

And 2-Player is the way to go. Best of luck!

@Mr_Mustache

I've got the Sprite up to 7 all round so he can unleash hell on anything with a weakness, but is it really necessary to level up the girl for anything? I havent bothered to sink time on leveling her magic because I really only use the girl for Healing, which is plenty strong at the moment anyway.
04/05/13, 01:59
@Shadowlink

Well, the Healing.. She had other stuff like Wall/Barrier which raise / make impervious to? Physical and Magical attacks. You'll probably be going down like crazy later on. Also, if you use her Sabres, I think the duration is based on Level. You don't just level them both up at the same time when you go out?
04/05/13, 02:13
@Mr_Mustache Well the girl is a pain, because you keep having to go back to heal in order to restore MP (or carry a bunch of Farie Walnuts). With the Sprite I just used Mana drain every so often and kept on casting.
04/05/13, 02:18
@Shadowlink

Ah. And you're remembering to use the lowest MP magic, right? And with weapons drawn? You can do that Remedy / Defense / Analyzer / Flame Sabre / etc. stuff and stay out there pretty long. Those are only 1 or 2 MP, so you can more than likely go up a full level on one boat.
04/05/13, 02:22
@Mr_Mustache

Yeah, but 6 types of magic x 3/4 levels each... anywhere between 18 and 24 trips back and forth. At best. Multiply that number further for any spells with 2 or 3 MP (like Luna).

Bleah.

BTW, I just worked out that to level up any one magic type completely, you need to cast at *least* 281 times. Add another half dozen or so to that for the times when you temporarily cap out and lose any left over XP.

@Shadowlink

18 trips? Eesh, not THAT much. How many MP do you have? If you have 40, you can cast Remedy 40 times. Thats good for like 2 levels right there. Use some Fairie Walnuts, you'll make WELL over 500 bucks killing dudes.

I guess if you're coming from 1 it might take a bit..
04/05/13, 03:08
@Shadowlink
That's why I fly back to Water Palace to level up the girls magic. The healing is free and you only have to move a couple screens to find a place where you draw your weapons. In retrospect, though, I have no idea why I bother; I only use her for healing.

I haven't played anything this week. No Mana, no Lego City, no Dragon Quest V, no Terraria with my sister, no nothing. I hope next week has some downtime.
04/05/13, 17:03
Just got to Mandango :)
04/05/13, 19:08
@VickiL
@Shadowlink

If you don't care about XP / Money, the place right around there is good, too. The Inn is right at the edge of town, and you have to walk about 20 in-game feet to go from the front door to bad guys. I forgot the name of the town. I mentioned it somewhere in here, back in Week 1.

@Cube191

Movin' on up!
04/06/13, 00:37
@Shadowlink

I have played through this games many times and ever bother with the girls magic. The only thing I use is heal. I mostly use the Sprites fire magic on the bosses.
04/06/13, 01:31
Done with week 4. I did the Dark Palace without climbing the mountain first.

I'm so behind in leveling my weapons! It's taking longer and longer to kill the regular enemies. Character levels are 41, so maybe that's a little behind, too.
04/07/13, 05:14
WEEK 5 - CARRY THAT WEIGHT / SINKING SUSPICION

Week 4 gave us our 7th Mana Seed. Just one more to get!:

-You know the drill, back to the top of the Mountain.. New coordinates for ya.
-Flying west to Tasnica, you'll meet Jema again. Strange things are afoot.
-After all is resolved, Jema points you towards the top of the mountain again. Diggin' the climb yet?
-Complete the test and discover a harsh reality!
-Off to the Sunken Island, some tough tasks lay before you.
-Get Dryad's powers, take to the sky, and land again (SI#1).
-Grand Palace ends our week. Complete it and ready yourself for our Final Week (SI#2)

Special Instructions #1:
This place is apparently confusing.. "In the second area of the cave, go to the northeast corner, then go west. Walk into the stream and halfway down, push the button on the wall to stop the flow so that you can go back up. Do the same for the third stream to reach the exit in the northwest corner."

Special Instructions #2:
Magic for orbs: Gem Missile on the left, Freeze on the right; Thunderbolt on the West, Fireball on the East; Lucent Beam in SW corner, Dark Force SE corner; hit a switch on a wall; Lunar Magic on final orb.

I guess thats it? Lemme know if you have any problems.
