Pikmin 3 Review (Nintendo Wii U) (9.8)  by

Just thought this title needed an official thread.

Yesterday, while browsing the interwebs at work, I found a hands-on of the game that mentioned something that I had not heard of anywhere else. Unfortunately, I don't remember where it was, but here's the gist...

Pikmin 3 now has an evade move! From Nintendojo "Handy, then, that our new lead character has a nifty dodge ability that sees both him and his band of Pikmin roll to the side in perfect unison whenever danger’s about to rear its ugly head. It took a while to master, especially since there seems to be a small amount of recovery time before you can initiate another one, but it brought a welcome sense of drama to the fights, as well as a greater feeling of control over your large army."

Let's give this launch window game some love! ERRR..... Releases August 4th!

Well, I tried to post the trailer. Thanks Renjaku!

Now lets take a look at Gamexplain of the newest video

There was a Pikmin 3 and Earthbound boycott here? What?

@VofEscaflowne ive restarted day four about 5 times while i learned how to properly manage two teams at the same time. I am not in full beast mode with this game micromanaging like crazy. I use the touch screen a lot to order people around, because of this, i play with the wii u game pad. I played up to the second boss, on day 11, with the wii u gamepad and i am doing perfectly fine. I did play for a minute with the wiimote, and though it is easier to aim, i just fine using the game pad better with my style of play (constantly using the touch screen to send people around).

I should be getting this tomorrow and hopefully I can begin playing soon. I need to finish that good ol' Podcast... I just got home today from a long trip in a complete different part of the country.

Psyched to see this beauty on my big HDTV screen. Woo!!!

Also, what's this about boycotts? Since when was anything boycotted?

So I'm walking around and a random butterfly lands in front of me

And what's really great is that the game automatically tags the picture with whatever you took a picture of! Neat! This is a White Spectralid and I can easily search on Miiverse everyone that took a picture of it. Talk about a great feature.

Wow, I'm having so much fun with Pikmin 3. I'll post something more detailed once I've beaten it. If you're on the fenced about buying Pikmin 3, I'd say go for it.

Really slick and fun game so far! I finished my third day and beat the first boss, who unfortunately took over a dozen of my Pikmin to the great beyond with him. The controls and feel of the game are really tight, and the little tweaks to the game's mechanics (such as giving you the number of your remaining Pikmin per color, the number that you have while throwing, all the GamePad features, and FINALLY MAKING THE FRACTIONS CORRECT when you're carrying something) all add up to a really polished package.

After finishing the third day, I jumped into Mission Mode's first "collect treasure" stage. I got a silver, tried it again, got a silver, tried it again...got a gold, but was ONE POINT away from Platinum! I'm very impressed with the one stage I played--it was super fun, addictive, and full of split-second decision-making. I definitely appreciate the RTS-style approach to the way some new Pikmin mechanics have been implemented, such as the bridge pieces and the gold piles, where Pikmin will keep working until they're gone. Makes for some pretty nice moments about where you need to allocate your Pikmin.

Can't wait to play more! But I'm trying to pace myself.

Played for about 3 hours... I really love how they handled the time limit stuff this time around. It's lax enough where you don't feel like you have to accomplish tons of stuff each day or face the threat of having to start the whole game over, but it's enough to keep you focused. I still find myself restarting days constantly, knowing I can do a lot better once I'm familiar with an area. Fun. Only stopped because my Gamepad battery was dying.

Just finished the first boss.

I lost 22 little guys, but I'll blame that on trying to use the gamepad after using the Wiimote/Nunchuk the first 3 days ;p

This really does seem like the perfect game to take in small doses. Which works out perfectly considering I'm going to be trying to balance this and 2 more games that I'm picking up on Tuesday, heh.

Finished day 4 and the 1st boss, lost 25 or so. Love this game!

Played quite a few rounds of Bingo Battle with my nephew (who an hr later picked up his own copy) and a round of co-op mission mode. Had a blast!

I think they really missed out on a fantastic thing by not including some online in this one. Fleshed out competitive and cooperative online modes could have been killer... and so unlike what we usually get from online console games. In fact, DLC is possible now, yeah? They should get on that right away.

My friend (who isnt usually the biggest Nintendo fan though certainly not a hater) lit up when I told him I was picking the game up today and wants to come play it on our next day off. I'm looking forward to trying the multiplayer out.

That's what I get. Delay a game from launch (window) and I forget I have preorders at two locations, both online with automatic shipping. (Amazon and their preorder price guarantees mixed with Gold Box deals for 5%off. They get me so often.) So I can either return a copy and loose some money, or I can try to trade it with somebody for The Wonderful $101 next month. I need real life friends with a Wii U that understand my idiosyncrasies and like the same types of games that I do.

Mine should arrive from NewEgg on Wednesday. I am currently in a zen-like state of post-hype patience. I wish this were true every time I was anticipating my copy of a new game. I was nearly rabid the last few days before Xenoblade.

Having a blast so far...played until day 6 where things pick up considerably trying to do multiple things at once. High replay as I constantly think about different ways to reach my goals.

Loving it so far. Bingo Battle is great :D

10 Days in. Haven't read any of this thread.

Feel like I just wasted 4 days, UGH. Days 1 and 2 were JAM PACKED with progress.
08/05/13, 23:33
@Mr_Mustache I've gotten real OCD with my days in this game. If i do not make process, i will start the day over with a different strategy...
08/06/13, 00:13
So before I start my copy, is there any general Pikmin tips to know? Strategies that are useful? I've never played more than five minutes of the first Pikmin. I don't know how these games work.
08/06/13, 00:18
@DrFinkelstein

The goal is to grow and kill as many Pikmin as possible, but the trick is to use the Pikmin you have to breed new Pikmin before you sacrifice the first set. If you can throw them DIRECTLY into the mouth of a Bulborb, that's a 2x point multiplyer.

If you see lots of these:

you're doing it right.

Good luck.
08/06/13, 00:26
@Scrawnton

Not doing that with Pikmin 3. No can do, sir. If he dies, he dies..

@DrFinkelstein

The entire beginning of the game is a Tutorial. I like to take a bunch of Pikmin with me (maybe 80?) and leave some in the Onion. Once a Pikmin returns something to the Onion (I gotta bitch about this -- no one will care), and it plops in the ground, you can NOT pick it, and it'll be a Flower Pikmin when you return. If you're never coming back top this location, obviously, pick it! And remember, there can only be 100 on the field at any given time. If you're wondering why nothing is coming out of the Onion, you're at the max already. Return some dudes to the Onion before the guy comes back, and THEN they'll get planted. When in fights, I often call off the dogs after a few seconds as many big guys (especially bosses) have some sort of "shake" or rolling attack or something. Anyone on board will generally be hurt, or worse. You probably should've played more than 5 minutes of the first Pikmin..

--Ok, "Onions" and "Pikmin." So, Alph and Brittany refer to them as Pikmin, except it was Captain Olimar who nicknamed them as such because they resembled Pikpik carrots back on his home planet (and Alph reads a transmission from Olimar and is unfamiliar with him, so he's not like Neil Armstrong and everyone knows his "one small step.." deal like they know "we're gonna call these Pikmin"). Also, he called the Pikmin pods "Onions" for a similar reason..though Alph and Brittany just openly referred to them that was as well as if that was their given name. When they encounter Pikmin for the first time, they have no idea what they are, so its not like "oh, a snake!" They'd have no way of knowing that they were "Pikmin" or ""Onions.""

Continuity stuff, come on, Nintendo!

@Mr_Mustache
If you do the side conversations before starting a mission they discuss that kind of stuff, although I can't remember if it fully explained all of those things or not.
