Let's Have Some Fun: Potential New Characters for Smash Bros Wii U / 3DO [roundtable]

Lots of heady topics on the board lately, so I thought maybe we could use a bit of fun, idle speculation. After all, that's what video game forums do best.

Smash Bros.
Wii U.
Characters.
What do you think?
Who do you like?
Who do you hate?
Who do you think is likely to get a shot, even if you couldn't care less about them?

This thread is to answer questions like that. (I'm sure there've been others like this, but do you really want me to search them up and necrobump 'em? Unless someone fiercely objects, let's just roll with it). Feel free to discuss stages, assist trophies or anything else relating to characters in the game. Have a moveset all written up for that dude from Geist? Let's hear it.

One rule: NO MEGAMAN. We get it. We'd all like to see the Blue Bomber in the next game. We get that the Capcom/Inafune split might keep it from happening. Let's take that conversation as understood and move beyond it.

Oh, I lied. Second rule: NO BELMONTS. Same deal. We can agree Simon or Trevor would be great. Take it as already spoken.

Feel free to venture further into 3rd parties if you must, but I'd prefer if we stick to Nintendo as much as possible. It's harder and more fun that way.

...

What character do I think is a shoe in?

Little Mac.

Punch-Out is a popular, iconic series that every old school gamer knows well. It also had a recent entry, so it's possibly more fresh on gamers' minds than some other NES era properties. Mac's a fighter, so he makes sense within the context of the game. And his boxing style would be fairly unique.

Yeah, he doesn't have a ton of special moves. But he could borrow some moves from some of the colorful boxers he goes up against. I could imagine him with some kind of Great Tiger spin move or Bald Bull charge. I'd have to see it in action to make sure it worked, but it's one possibility. But even if you just stuck to standard boxing moves, he'd still be pretty unique for Smash Bros.

There are tons of other choices off the top of my head, but I don't want to flood the first post with all the fun answers. What do you guys think?

Oh, and another question: Do you think the appearance of a character as an Assist Trophy in Brawl makes them more likely to appear as a playable character? Is someone like Samurai Goroh more likely because we saw him in some capacity last time, or does that not matter at all?

Bad Box Art Mega Man. In a game. That's the most insane idea I've ever seen.

@kriswright

I just read your opening post again where you scream 'NO MEGAMAN'. An addendum if I may.

It would be freaking hilarious if he did get into Smash, but only in his bad box art guise. The howls of anguish alone would be worth it.

It's funny that the Street Fighter x Tekken video had no Street Fighter or Tekken characters featured.
@TheOldManFromZelda
There was the Mario 2 level from Melee. It had ALMOST all the stuff you mentioned.
I also vote for WART!

If we see anyone from Namco then it's just going to be Pac-Man, this isn't a cross-over game. It'll be similar to how Pac-Man appeared in the arcade version of Mario Kart, just a little "thank-you" thrown in for Namco.

I think there are bound to be at least a few Namco characters/trophies/stages/soundtracks/etc. Sakurai is a wild and crazy guy.

I'm really curious about how he's going to shake this franchise up. Could we finally see a traditional Nintendo fighting game? A 3D Power Stone-esque game?

@Anand

I hope not! Keep the core gameplay, make all the extra stuff better.
06/23/12, 04:08
@TheOldManFromZelda

Yesss, that WOULD be awesome.

@Shadowlink

Dude. That stuff I showed you is already IN a game. Thats like Tekken vs. Street Fighter or something.

@Secret_Tunnel
How much better could the extra stuff be?! (I mean, aside from an Adventure mode that was actually fun.)

I wouldn't mind either scenario, honestly. But didn't Sakurai keep saying that he wouldn't make another Smash game without having a new hook? Is cross-system play/character-building really enough?

@Anand

RPG MODE.
06/23/12, 04:50
That's worse!

@Anand

EXTREME online integration would make the game perfect.
06/23/12, 05:51
^ working online would make the game perfect. Me and my friend live like a block away with broadband and it was unplayable.

hoping Namco doesn't ruin the series or try to make it like every other fighting game...
06/23/12, 09:26
I am skeptical of Namco's involvement but it sounds more like a partnership. As for Namco characters a Soul Calibur character would be neat. Nightmare maybe.

@Secret_Tunnel
Oh, you meant online? That would definitely be a significant upgrade.

By the way, have you guys thought about the last few Nintendo/Namco collaborations? Mario Kart Arcade(s) and StarFox Assault!

I don't think those would have any bearing on this game, though, because Sakurai seems like a control freak (in a good way!).
06/23/12, 15:13
Birdo would be awesome in Super Smash U. Egg throwing my way to the top!!!

@Davenor

I just miss the SMB2 level from Melee. One thing I would love to see from Nintendo (that I know would never happen) is including all retro levels in future Smash Bros. and Mario Karts. Even if I had to pay extra for them as DLC.
06/23/12, 19:55
@Jargon I agree, that would be great to buy our favorite levels on DLC. Who knows? Let's be positive. ;)

@Shadowlink

Dude, seriously? Who wants to play as Dampe? The guy is in the game for like 4 minutes.

Same goes for some other characters being mentioned; isn't there a cutoff point? I mean, Slippy isn't in the games for a reason.. I don't want to be a meerkat, but I really don't think that a Koopa Paratroopa or whatever shouldn't be in the game, or even a Shy Guy. Wart, King K. Rool, those are different huge guys.

Don't forget the most important part of the "Super Smash Bros." name: "Super."
06/23/12, 22:53
Oh, I forgot... I want Popeye.

I actually started on an article last year arguing for Popeye as a critical piece of Nintendo history that deserved to be in Smash. I wonder what happened to that?
