So friend had me over AGAIN today to play more of it which I am not complaining about in the slightest. I left the game yesterday just after I had got to the entrance of Hyrule Castle. I thought it would be cool to run as close to it as I could without dying horribly and see if I could get anything cool. Well today I decided I would attempt to get away from there and instead ran around the east part of the map a bit, before going north. Interesting things I found:

1. Guardians aren't only for the ground! There are flying ones which are certainly a pain.
2. A shrine where I had to bounce a ball into a hole. Was pretty easy and not too remarkable.
3. Some people were talking about leviathans? Not sure what they are.
4. Now this is the cool one. I was wandering around on my horse and found a forest. Upon approach a cutscene played and I got a quest to find the shrine in this forest. Here's the catch though, the entire place is dark and you need to use fire to look around. Took a while to figure out what I was doing there and I won't spoil it but it had a great conclusion.
5. And to finish off today I found a fairly large Bokoblin fort. It was high up on a rock with several archers and moblins to protect it. Using stealth and skill, I managed to take it down. Got myself some Moblin Clubs (45 damage!) and a good shield (40 defence!).

So considering I have yet to even go to Kakariko I think I have done pretty well for myself. Not sure how much more if it I will be playing but I am enjoying it more and more I play it.

This is one of those games where I think it's fun for people to share their experiences about the neat things they've come across, but I've actually backed out of making such posts several times now. I'm too worried about what might be considered a spoiler, especially since discovery is a large part of this game. I know carlosrox in particular expressed concern over hearing too much, and I'm sure he's not the only one. And since the game's so open then we've all been doing different things. His idea of creating a different thread for that stuff may be a good idea.

@TheBigG753 I actually just finished up that section myself. It seems we're on a similar path, hee hee! I actually still thought it was just as great a sequence of events, maybe it wasn't as driven as the Zora Domain stuff, but the gameplay was just as good and I felt it was a well-thought-out area and the progression had a lot of variety and ways to handle things.

My bro plays for hours and hours at a time.

He NEVER does this.

My bro is playing late at night.

He NEVER does this.

This game is from another WORLD.

Yup. This game is special. The first village is simply unbelievable.

There's no words for this game.

@Mop it up

Yeah, I agree it was still really good and different from the first one, I just felt that the buildup to the first dungeon was stronger. I also had more fun doing the battle on the water vs. the mechanical elephant than scaling Death Mountain, though dealing with the guardian sentinels wasn't bad at all (those sorts of forced stealth sections can be rough, but this game made it fun -- of course it did!)

Have you been doing a lot of the shrines along that general path? Some of them have gotten pretty meaty.
03/07/17, 13:56
@Shadowlink It marks all the places that you die, right? Just die a lot.
03/07/17, 14:56
@Zero

I think it just tracks the most recent place you RIP.
03/07/17, 15:21
Oh. I was looking forward to the end of the game with red Xs on the map everywhere, lol. Ah well.
03/07/17, 15:56
@Zero

Oh man that would be an awesome endgame map to roll after the credits or something.
03/07/17, 15:57
@Zero @Kal-El814 Yeah, I was also hoping it would keep all the red X's, but nope. The games usually have a counter for that, so it would have been like the next evolution of that.

@TheBigG753 I've been seeking out the shrines in general since I wanted the heart and stamina upgrades. There have certainly been some good ones, the blue flame one on the Goron mountain was probably the best one yet.

This game almost doesn't seem real. It shouldn't be compared to other games out there cuz it just isn't even a fair comparison. I think back to stuff I've seen in my bro's game and my game it's staggering how chaotic and varied the game ALWAYS is. Depending where the fucking *camera is turned* makes the experience unique. Like, COME ON!!!

I don't know WHAT Nintendo did to make this fucking game.

The only game I can think of at a similar level is GTA5, it's doing something super impressive as well, but obviously very different.

It goes above and beyond what my DREAMS imagined a Zelda game could be since I was a kid.

I keep thinking that maybe I've seen enough for this shock to wear off but it's NEVER enough. Between me and my bros' combined playtime we've still ONLY seen basic grasslands, and maybe 5% of the game world combined.

Expectations don't work with this game, because as amazing as it is it KEEPS outdoing itself, without even TRYING, because you'll see some ridiculous detail depending on where you are, what you're looking at, etc. All 3 of us could be watching the same screen and see something different. It happens nonstop when we watch eachother play.

The sense of wonder and surprise is basically unmatched.

I've only JUST reached the first main quest outside the Plateau and already I feel there's no hyperbole in anyone saying this is the greatest game ever made up to this point at least.

Like, I dare say it even exceeds whatever Mario 64 accomplished.

It's a WORLD inside that cartridge/screen. It feels like there's a PLANET, an entire ecosystem in the damn game.

I could go on but I'll leave it at that for now.

Game of my dreams.

Just got back from my first real Zelda break (a.k.a. work), ready to jump back in! I got all sorts of options tonight, baby!

@Mop it up

Yep, that's the one I was thinking of specifically. It ended up being waaaaaay more significant than I was expecting.

I was thinking, there has so much talk from the Western game media in recent years about the death of Japanese game developers and how Japanese games aren't really leading the industry anymore. Dark Souls becoming such a big influence on other games maybe helped slow that talk down a tad bit, but for the most part Japan is written off as this place that can still produce some great games here and there but doesn't really push the industry forward in any meaningful way.

Even Super Mario Galaxy, which got nearly universal amazing scores and became one of the highest rated games ever, was often written about like it was just a really good Mario 64 in space. You know, SUPER FUN but not pushing gaming forward. (Not sure I agree with that assessment whatsoever, but whatever.)

Now though Japan has produced a game that, from what I'm reading, much of the Western media feels has outdone Western developers in one of "their" own genres (I know GTA III didn't invent open world gaming, but it is considered the game that created its current form, and the big open world games are pretty much all Western games as far as I know?) and is being considered not just one of the best games ever made (like Super Mario Galaxy was) but a huge step forward for gaming.

Not really sure where I am going with this, but I wonder if people will start respecting Japanese developers (or at least Nintendo) and their potential to be at the forefront of the industry again? It feels like maybe Japan / Nintendo were written off prematurely?

Whatever the case, as a Nintendo fan I'm loving the reactions I'm seeing.

RE7 too. It's a mini BOTW for the RE series. Trust me, there's stuff in that game that'll make your jaw drop. The bosses for example are a sight to behold. Anyone excited about BOTW and what it means for the Zelda series needs to check out RE7 because it feels like a similar step for that series.

Both needed to go backward before they could move forward.

My brother is fully saying he thinks BOTW is the greatest game ever made. I've never heard him say stuff like that, ever, even for games I know are his favorites in gaming history. He's a lapsed Nintendo fan, he doesn't stay up late playing games, he doesn't play games for hours at a time.

BOTW has changed ALL this.

Really, fuck it, I think it's more of an impact than Mario 64. While Mario 64 set the standard for 3D, I think BOTW sets it again. It's not that it's "open world", it's that there are next to NO BOUNDARIES, the ENTIRE world is one big giant puzzle/playground you can interact with in numerous ways.

I don't think it was Zelda 1 (maybe it was, it would make sense) that this quote came from but I remember Miyamoto saying he wanted to create a world in your drawer, that you open up and is always there (maybe it was Pikmin?), well BOTW feels like that more than any game.

I love games where the environment itself is a character. Black Mesa, Ishimura, Mars, etc. BOTW takes that to a whole new level with its rendition of Hyrule.

It feels ALIVE. BOTW feels BEYOND regular games. The main thing is how damn alive and real the place feels. Never have I been in a game world where I felt SO strongly that this is a REAL, believable PLACE.

AHHHHHHH!! I CAME INTO THIS THREAD BY ACCIDENT NOOOOOO
03/08/17, 01:58
@carlosrox Hmm, but most of what I've read from the game media about RE 7 is its a great return to form, not that it's really pushing the industry forward. I guess I just mean that Japan has been written off as INNOVATORS for awhile now.
03/08/17, 02:01
@Zero
I just meant that it shows the Japanese still got it when they're inspired.

I'd say RE7 is pretty innovative.

Things I learned about Zelda: Breath of the Wild #235: If something out there in the world looks like it should have some purpose, however small, but you don't see anything meaningful just...study it a bit. I've found some Korok Seeds in some very interesting places.

@TheBigG753

I'm really into this Cup and Ball thing now.
