Splatoon on the Wii U

Splatoon is Nintendo's unique twist on the shooter genre. Shoot ink on both your friends and environments to win the match! Players can turn into squids and 'swim' through their team's ink color. Players can also use their team's ink color to slow down enemy movement. It's ink or be inked in this chaotic marriage of third person shooters, de Blob, and good ole fashioned paintball.

I think it's awesome. The replay value is ridiculously high in this game with even basic shit. Feeling like I'm getting something new every week is damn awesome. MK8 coulda used some of that. Or even Smash.

Nothing like getting new content to make something feel fresh. I love the new Smash DLC. I think MK8 was too slow with it.

I forget where but I've seen that one stage with the various levels before. The other one was new but it's only a screenshot. Hopefully there's more beyond this on disc stuff planned.

Agreed. Essentially, all Nintendo is doing here is making us like kids waiting for the appropriate time to open up our presents... they are already paid for, wrapped, and hidden away in a closet somewhere, and some kids can't stand being forced to wait.

We, of course, just snuck in the closet and peeked. Oops.

I'm surprised there isn't more of a backlash over this kind of stuff. I thought Nintendo fans were usually against this kind of locked content?

I'd really like to check this game out at some point. I really haven't heard anything negative about it.

@PogueSquadron

Well it's locked content but not behind a pay wall so I'm sure it's different in this case.

I'm very much against locked on-disc content when I'm forced to pay for it. Rolling it out slowly for free in this particular game I'm fine with, though.

Worst content locking that's going on in Splatoon is the Amiibo challenges.

I appreciate how I'm able to learn and appreciate each level specifically with each roll out. My big question is WHAT HAPPENS AFTER DISC-BASED CONTENT?

@DrFinkelstein
I'm guessing paid DLC. This game's taken off in such a way that I doubt Nintendo will be able to resist.
06/22/15, 03:08
Yup, no pay wall. It's more of a design decision to keep people from getting burnt out on everything the game has to offer after a week... keeps everybody excited and talking about the game too, which probably benefits sales for Nintendo, but I can't see anything shady about what they are doing.

You don't see people bitching because you can't do everything in Animal Crossing on the first day. It's the same basic principle here.

Every day that there's a new weapon or course I make a point of logging on and checking it out. It's a totally legitimate way of keeping the game interesting and synchronizing the way people play the content. It's not DLC, it's a curated experience.

@DeputyVanHalen

What I don't understand is how you can take out ALL 4 guys with one of your Kraken deals, and the other 3 members of your team don't "move up" in the time that the other players have to return to base. Guys, I just took out of ALL of our competition -- what the heck are you doing back there??

I received this game for Fathers Day. I'm soooooo behind! I'm currently a level 5 and I'm starting to really grasp the concept of it all. So basically, I'm starting to become very addicted to the online play. You guys meet up randomly or is there a scheduled daily/weekly time?
06/22/15, 17:47
@Abdooooo

Randomly for the most part. I'll jump in if I see a friend playing, or I'll see friends slowly replace the strangers I had been playing with.

@Guillaume

Do you actually get a notification if one of your friends is currently playing? I see the Join a Friend option in the lobby but every time I have tried it, it just shows my friends list. It would be nice to at least show who's playing online like MK8 or Smash.
06/22/15, 19:05
If you can join up with someone the box will be colored in and it will say joinable. Your friend has to be in a regular battle though.... they won't show up if they're messing around with equipment or playing single player or playing in a ranked battle.

@mrbiggsly

Thank you!

It really shows that I've prioritized Earthbound Beginnings since E3. I play horribly right now. Finally managed to end up on the winning team, with more kills than deaths, but my score was awful. Didn't even hit 1K when I was using the Aerospray RG.

Welcome to Octopolis!

@Abdooooo

I will strongly suggest that if you wish your level to grow, you DON'T hop in with NW players right now. I did that as much as I could for the first week or so, and I lost SO much it really messed up my confidence. Big time.

I hopped out of "our room" and returned to "gen pop," and I IMMEDIATELY noticed differences. Stick with people around your own level until you get up around Lv12, I'd say, and go from there.

Good luck!

@r_hjort

Thanks guys! I'm starting to get the whole load out mechanic and when to use your special or sub weapons. It feels so good when you go on a multi splatting spree! That doesn't sound right...

Echoes a lot of sentiments that I share and have read from others already: http://www.cracked.com/blog/6-ways-nintendo-will-save-us-from-awful-shooter-video-games/
