Well, I don't think they need to do any blatant "world building" but I think something that could've helped this game would be to make the Sprixie Kingdom a little different, visually, from the Mushroom Kingdom. As of now, it's a different kingdom in name only. It would've been cool to see them design a new world with its own tropes, similar to what they did in Mario Bros. 2.
Even with that, that would be enough probably. You see statues of monsters that you've never seen before, or ruins of some civilization that looks vastly different than the Mushroom Kingdom. The Mario 3D games are, for better or worse, like you said - obstacle course games. Nintendo isn't exactly trying to create a "place" like they did with Sunshine, or to a lesser extent Galaxy (or go back to something like Banjo-Kazooie). They wanted to make a pure platforming game. If you dig the kind of stuff Banjo does, then you're not going to find that here. If you want some exceptionally designed levels bursting with creativity, then you'll be right at home.
I'd like to say that a game can do both, but I think you'd then be looking at a MUCH bigger project that would probably have to go beyond what EAD Tokyo can do by themselves. |

@ZeroWhat I was referring to was something called a "decompiler". There are communities that decompile things for fun (e.g.: ROM-hackers, Project M, "Newer NSMB"). There are also professionals that will decompile their rivals' work to get a foot in the door (most notably, back in the DOOM / Quake days to create their own FPS). Nintendo is in the media doghouse right now. Sony or Microsoft could decompile SM3DW, add some story and replace the characters with their own, and thanks to the legion of people who are willing to be ignorant about Nintendo games and report positively on Sony and Microsoft, sell it as if it's their own original product and be loved for it. What happens when some of the public says, "Hey, these levels and gameplay are just like Super Mario 3D World!" ? The media retorts, "Oh, you fanboys are so paranoid. " And the lawyers say, "It's 60% original content so it's not against the law." Conversely, one could argue that the code running behind the scenes of a game consists much more than 60%, and there would have to be an entire blu-ray box-set worth of plot/lore to balance out such an obvious copy, but I can't deny that it must be a tempting option for Sony and Microsoft with the unscrupulous moves they have gotten away with so far. |

Hinph said:[ref=id=10581&pagenumber=18#372737]Zero said:[/ref][quote] It seems like most other developers that make platformers don't understand how important control and physics are to the genre. Even an acclaimed plarformer like Psychonauts... the game has a lot going for it, but the character just isn't any fun to control. In a Mario game, it's a joy just to move the character around.
I do hope we will see some sort of 3D platformer resurgence at some point. Psychonauts is an acclaimed game, but it's never once been given an award for great platforming. A great critically acclaimed platformer is Super Meat Boy, which puts Mario to shame in terms of controls and level design. As for 3D... Well, I'm still waiting for Cloudbuilt to see if we get any decent non-Mario platformers. 3D platformers are just incredibly rare because no one gives a shit. And that makes me sad, because a good platformer is my favorite genre. And while the new Mario games are fun, I like them very challenging, the original Mario games were a great example of easy to play but hard to master, you could leisurely walk across the stage if you were new, or if you're me or other lunatics you just go full-speed the entire time and master the physics. Those days are almost all gone, sadly. |

OK, I'm pretty sure I'm nearing the end, maybe! I'm at the point where I can't unlock any more levels, and the last stage I finished was Boss Blitz.
I now have
342 green stars 76 stamps
Looking at my map menu for all the stages, I have all the green stars and all the stamps for every stage I can possibly get them for. There are still 11 gold flagpoles I need to go for.
I wonder if there are yet still more levels! At least, that's what I'm thinking, since I don't know where else I can find stamps, yet when I look at my stamp collection, I'm still missing 9 stamps (I can see their silhouettes). I'm guessing that the next path will open up at that sand-looking structure that has the symbols for star, stamp, and flagpole. |
