Super Mario 3D World Review (Nintendo Wii U) (9.5)  by

"Meow!"

Never in our lifetimes did we expect Mario and friends to ever utter the sounds of our purring feline friends and yet here on November 22nd, we all will get that chance. Luckily from what many reports say, Super Mario 3D World is an incredible platforming experience that not only looks great in HD but it plays great with the gamepad.

This game is a first in another way as well, with it being the first 3D Mario title to feature simultaneous multiplayer. Now you and your family or friends can run and stomp and pounce together while fighting all sorts of enemies, new and old. Many power-ups make a return but plenty of new ones are featured as well.

There is no doubt about it; the music and graphics look great and this holiday season it's going to be a system-moving release.

Who out there is buying? How many spoilers have you allowed? (I accidentally saw some big ones just researching images for this thread!) What are you most excited for? Soon enough, share your thoughts and tips and tricks!

Please be conscientious to big spoilers once the game releases. Discuss the game openly but spoiler tag any unlockables or be sure to denote when you're talking about late-game content with perhaps a World 7-5 type bold note ahead of a level-based discussion.

Don't forget to update your Negative World catalog for this game! Do so right here!!

@Dark Weres You can't just "copy" amazing design. It takes skilled designers to do so. I'd love to see Microsoft or Sony even try to make a Mario killer.

No seriously, would love it. Because it would come up short, but would probably still be worth playing. We need more 3D platformers.

Well, I don't think they need to do any blatant "world building" but I think something that could've helped this game would be to make the Sprixie Kingdom a little different, visually, from the Mushroom Kingdom. As of now, it's a different kingdom in name only. It would've been cool to see them design a new world with its own tropes, similar to what they did in Mario Bros. 2.

Even with that, that would be enough probably. You see statues of monsters that you've never seen before, or ruins of some civilization that looks vastly different than the Mushroom Kingdom. The Mario 3D games are, for better or worse, like you said - obstacle course games. Nintendo isn't exactly trying to create a "place" like they did with Sunshine, or to a lesser extent Galaxy (or go back to something like Banjo-Kazooie). They wanted to make a pure platforming game. If you dig the kind of stuff Banjo does, then you're not going to find that here. If you want some exceptionally designed levels bursting with creativity, then you'll be right at home.

I'd like to say that a game can do both, but I think you'd then be looking at a MUCH bigger project that would probably have to go beyond what EAD Tokyo can do by themselves.

Made it to World 11 last night with all stars to this point collected...still amazing.

It seems like most other developers that make platformers don't understand how important control and physics are to the genre. Even an acclaimed plarformer like Psychonauts... the game has a lot going for it, but the character just isn't any fun to control. In a Mario game, it's a joy just to move the character around.

I do hope we will see some sort of 3D platformer resurgence at some point.

@Hinph

I loved Psychonauts so much, but my god the platforming in the last level was beyond infuriating thanks to the controls.

What I was referring to was something called a "decompiler". There are communities that decompile things for fun (e.g.: ROM-hackers, Project M, "Newer NSMB"). There are also professionals that will decompile their rivals' work to get a foot in the door (most notably, back in the DOOM / Quake days to create their own FPS). Nintendo is in the media doghouse right now. Sony or Microsoft could decompile SM3DW, add some story and replace the characters with their own, and thanks to the legion of people who are willing to be ignorant about Nintendo games and report positively on Sony and Microsoft, sell it as if it's their own original product and be loved for it.

What happens when some of the public says, "Hey, these levels and gameplay are just like Super Mario 3D World!" ?
The media retorts, "Oh, you fanboys are so paranoid. " And the lawyers say, "It's 60% original content so it's not against the law."
Conversely, one could argue that the code running behind the scenes of a game consists much more than 60%, and there would have to be an entire blu-ray box-set worth of plot/lore to balance out such an obvious copy, but I can't deny that it must be a tempting option for Sony and Microsoft with the unscrupulous moves they have gotten away with so far.

@Dark Weres

Somehow I don't see that happening, just like I don't see Nintendo decompiling CoD to create their own Mario Warfare. I don't know if major publishers are too respectable, or too afraid of the lawsuits, to do this to each other, but they haven't so far and I don't think they ever will.

That kind of stuff may fly on platforms like iOS but I don't think we'll see it happening from Microsoft, Sony or Nintendo.

@Guillaume
I hope you're right, but with the media currently saying things like "Nintendo should develop for the other guys" or "I would buy Nintendo games if they were on my PS4 or XB1" It would look like a tempting proposition for Sony or Microsoft.

Psychonauts is an acclaimed game, but it's never once been given an award for great platforming. A great critically acclaimed platformer is Super Meat Boy, which puts Mario to shame in terms of controls and level design. As for 3D... Well, I'm still waiting for Cloudbuilt to see if we get any decent non-Mario platformers. 3D platformers are just incredibly rare because no one gives a shit. And that makes me sad, because a good platformer is my favorite genre. And while the new Mario games are fun, I like them very challenging, the original Mario games were a great example of easy to play but hard to master, you could leisurely walk across the stage if you were new, or if you're me or other lunatics you just go full-speed the entire time and master the physics.

Those days are almost all gone, sadly.

@Xbob42
Glad you're talking about 3D World.
12/07/13, 04:19
OK, I'm pretty sure I'm nearing the end, maybe! I'm at the point where I can't unlock any more levels, and the last stage I finished was Boss Blitz.

I now have

342 green stars
76 stamps

Looking at my map menu for all the stages, I have all the green stars and all the stamps for every stage I can possibly get them for. There are still 11 gold flagpoles I need to go for.

I wonder if there are yet still more levels! At least, that's what I'm thinking, since I don't know where else I can find stamps, yet when I look at my stamp collection, I'm still missing 9 stamps (I can see their silhouettes). I'm guessing that the next path will open up at that sand-looking structure that has the symbols for star, stamp, and flagpole.

@Xbob42 This is the first time that I've heard the claim that Super Meat Boy puts Mario to shame in controls. Or level design, for that matter, though we might have to clarify which Mario we're talking about there.

I've never played Super Meat Boy so I really can't say. I've just honestly never seen that claim before.
12/07/13, 07:28
@Zero

Edmund McMillen made that claim in Indie Game: The Movie, but he was doing it to compliment Tommy, haha.

They're very different games though. Both have controls that complement the level design really well, it's just that Super Meat Boy is focused on super-tight difficult design whereas I think of Mario as more of a joy-filled adventure where you go through insane worlds with crazy ideas that may or may not be super difficult.

After inviting a bunch of people over to play earlier this week, I've decided two things about this game:

1) NintendoLand is a better game for multiplayer.

2) This game absolutely sucks if one of the people playing will do whatever it takes to get the crown.

I'm for certain done playing 4-player, it was no fun at all. My wife and I will continue to go through co-op and ignore the crown/winner aspect (which I really wish you could shut off completely) and enjoy the experience. Competitively, awful. Too easy to screw people over, and co-op is just infinitely more fun.

Beyond that un-fun experience being stabbed in the back and thrown to my death over and over, I'm enjoying the variety of the game, and finding green stars/stamps is a joy. My biggest complaint is that the super fun levels (like Plessie) are over too quickly! Oh and the Mario Kart level? FABULOUS. I would play a whole game of that!
12/07/13, 17:29
It's kind of neat following the Mii ghosts through the level and watching them play. Last night I saw Griptor's and Mop it up's ghosts.

@-JKR-

I haven't played multiplayer yet, but I kind of dread the day that I have to play this game with my niece and nephews. They cry and/or fight over who gets the highest jump on the flagpole in NSMB, so I can only imagine how bad it'll be when they're fighting over who gets the crown.
12/07/13, 18:35
@-JKR-
Why would that be the game's fault and why would you let them do that? I could see how you could say it's unfun if maybe it's just too hectic but because a friend was purposefully sabotaging you I don't see how that's a valid complaint.

I have a blast playing with one bro and hope to get the second to come around. Other than that I could probably have some friends over for 4 players but I don't do that much. I envy anyone who can easily get 4 people for this. I think it'd be awesome.

Also how far are you cuz the game gets exponentially better as it goes on.

I will agree with you the crown should be an option but I if people can ignore who gets first or just don't compete for it it's a non issue. My lack of enthusiasm towards it stems more from its cosmetic appearance. I just wanna see the characters as they are without a silly crown atop their heads.
12/07/13, 19:29
JKR is not into CHICAGO STYLE gaming confirmed. I wonder what me, Anand, my brother and I dunno... one of my cousins or someone else who is into griefing... would feel about the multiplayer? I guess we should find out soon.
12/07/13, 19:34
My wife, my buddy and his wife play this from time-to-time.
We definitely get competitive about the crown, but we also aren't using that particular file as our "main" games.

I suppose it depends how you approach it. You decided to ignore it, and I'm willing to bet you're having fun! Trish and I ignore it when playing just the two of us... Usually. Sometimes she'll back stab me right at the flagpole, but that's hilarious.
12/07/13, 20:16
@-JKR-
You should have either smacked some sense into the trouble maker or just joined in the chaotic fun. Honestly though it's so easy to lose lives in this game in multiplayer, I fear to play extremely competitively. We would never finish a single stage.

The score counter actually made score in Mario games relevant and for that I commend it.
