The next generation of Pokémon is finally here! All-new 3D graphics, new monsters, new evolutions, new online social features, and a brand-new adventure is all packed nicely and tightly in the latest entry in the mega-hit franchise. And what do you know, the critics seem to love it, too!

@ploot I saw a brief gameplay video of that and fount it incredibly disorienting when the player was on rollerblades.

The city's areas are so samey that I get lost easily. It doesn't help that there are alleyways! I think they were sort of going for the "getting lost in a big city" thing, but it doesn't feel good.

@sirmastersephiroth

You'll also need a copy of one of the Gen 5 games. You can only transfer up one generation at a time, starting with Gen 3. Can't transfer down.

@Pokefreak911 I'll add you when I get home. I haven't reached the Friend Safari stuff yet but I also don't have any NW Trainers on my friend list. Welcome.

Maybe you can help me understand why I'm losing so many online battles. Blurgh!

@Super_Conzo
I suspect either bad play on your part or EV training/good play on their part.

I don't think the camera angle helps, the way it swings behind you, I wish you could toggle to the top-down angle and then zoom way out to get your bearings, or why not just have a map on the bottom screen? (the weird pinwheel map that pops up isn't helpful IMO)

@ploot

It's definitely not just you. The camera angle being so low contributes heavily to that, especially the way it arbitrarily resets when you enter/leave a building, so it's hard to tell where you've been. And it's one of the few areas of the game that has some semblance of camera controls, and those mechanics don't work so hot.

I agree with @deathly_hallows in that a bottom screen map of the area would be very useful. I must've instinctively looked at the bottom screen dozens of times while playing in order to get my bearings, but no luck.

Is the super-zoomed-out-and-not-very-useful "Town Map" (more of a global map) the only option for maps in this game?

So how come the Pokemon don't actually make contact with each other during battles? Do you think that would push it to a T rating, and obviously Nintendo does not want that for Pokemon?

No, I think it has more to do with the fact that there are just SO many different monsters, with SO many different moves, and making individual attack and damage animations for each and every character for each and every move would just be too time consuming. And ultimately not worth it.

Besides, the more powerful, projectile moves will actually physically make contact, which is what most people end up using by the end of the game anyway. In the end, it doesn't really matter, and I seriously doubt it has anything to do with an ESRB rating.

A map would be wonderful, and would have (I easily guess) been easy to implement.

I'm juggling between this game and Wind Waker HD, so I've also instinctively looked to the bottom screen for a map. Wind Waker does it so well!

So, anyone with Pokemon Y perhaps able to get me a Houndoominite?
10/18/13, 02:18
Why did I just download Y? I only have roughly a million games to play on this stupid system, and they all take 1000 hours to beat. I'm sure I'll thoroughly enjoy the first couple hours, at least.

@Koovaps

It's actually a pretty streamlined game so far. I'm gaining levels quickly and moving right along. I like it! Too bad there's very little plot so far.... but I'm not even at the second gym.
10/18/13, 05:41
I've had the game since the literal launch and have 58 hours.

Plot is paced badly. Slow at the beginning then it all comes at you in the end and not in a Bioshock Infinite sort of way.

Been working my way through Route 4 for the past few days. Think I'm about halfway through.

I'm not kidding.

Is the 3DS Pokedex app updated to reflect the changes in X/Y? and does it now include the new Pokemons? Cause that would get me to download it.
10/19/13, 15:02
Don't think so yet.

I have to echo the complaints about the camera in Lumiose City, it's a neat concept, but poorly implemented. IT would benefit SO much from having a map on the bottom screen, but as is, it's simply confusing for no good reason. I also need to voice some displeasure about the pokemon battles. The graphics are nice and all, but the framerate is all over the place. The only time it can hold a steady 30 fps is during the classic view, where you see your pokemon from behind vs the opponent. Whenver it zooms in, pans out, shows a double-shot, or if there are more than two pokemon battling, the framerate stutters, and it's super distracting. And this isn't even with 3D on! Turn up that slider and you can forget about ever reaching 30 fps. Normally I'm not such a critic of these things, but this game strikes me as very unpolished. I understand they had to get it shipped for a worldwide release, but this is unacceptable IMO. I am hoping for a patch, but most likely we will have to buy the third version to get a better framerate.

Anyways, that isn't to say this issue has ruined my enjoyment, because I'm loving the game. There is so much to do and it looks gorgeous. Feels like a true step forward, which I can't say about any other game in the series, regardless of minor tweaks to the battle system. Oh, and I love how bug pokemon are viable again! They are great against Psychic and Steel types.

^^ This chart! YES! This is what I need.
10/19/13, 17:23
We need to find the chart with Fairy type added.

As a beginning player who has no clue what the hell I'm doing I've been using this chart:

POKEMON XY CHART (PDF).
