The Wonderful 101 on the Wii U
8.53/10 from 11 user ratings

Welcome to the official discussion thread for The Wonderful 101 on the Wii U!

To start, please add this game to your log, add it to your collection (if applicable), and (when you are ready) rate it using the link above!

So the game is out in Europe. Anyone here pick it up yet? I'm waiting for the North American release.

Like I said on a different thread, this is a kind of game that's hard to explain. It "looks" like Pikmin but plays like a 3D beat'em up. The game didn't really click with me until I tried the demo. Now I'm really looking forward to it.

How do you recruit them? I tried a few times (as you do with civilians), no dice!

Someone told me that basic enemy infantry can be recruited. To do so you first have to damage those enemies until they are glowing purple (maybe start with a couple of unite morphs followed by group attacks); this is the sign that the enemy is ready to be recruited, so draw a wonder line around them. (Be careful not to kill them as health will not be displayed on basic infantry).

Hmm, I should probably try doing this myself!

That purple glow is actually the first second or two of their death-animation, so YES kill them, just recruit them before they finish dying.

@roykoopa64

Ran two more missions last night. I MAY go back and do them (though I think I got everything). Finally got a Heart. Hmm! And yes, this game is extremely versatile. So many different things to do!

@Dark Weres

And I'll have to try this out, too.

Finally picked this up on the weekend - loved the demo when it first came out.

Yeah, got my copy in the mail last Tuesday. Only had a chance to play a bit. Got to what I think is the first major boss... the one where you land on it's arm, and eventually twist it off. It's fun, and I've found a few secrets/collectables so far. It definitely has a learning curve, and I'm glad I played the demo first (although I never put much time into it).

I also finally got around to W101, and unfortunately I don't think it's for me. For some reason none of the drawing on the screen seemed to work for special powers, and the first stage (on swaying bus roofs) got me kind of motion sick. Oh well! I guess that's bound to happen now and then.

@-JKR-

Drawing doesn't work?? One of them is a straight line!
01/29/14, 00:22
@-JKR- While I haven't played that much of the game, I did play some of the demo too, and I believe that some people may have a problem with is drawing the lines/shapes too big at first for lack of drawing power/mechanic.

If I'm not mistaken, the size of your army determines how big your lines/shapes can be. A bigger fist or longer sword are more powerful than small ones, so if you only have 10 dudes following you, and you try to draw a large diameter circle, you'll "run out" of the draw mechanic. Hopefully that makes sense, and even more hopefully, I'm correct ha-ha!

@cooliocuneo

Aha, yeah, that very well may have been the problem. I was drawing as large as possible on the screen!

@-JKR- Unite fist!

It's amazing how poorly explained this game is. It really just throws you right in. But once you learn to swim, it's wonderful.

@achhibbar

Yeah, that's what turned me off to the game initially. I gave it a second chance and finished it this past week. It was a lot of fun.

@-JKR-

I suggest using the right stick to draw. That may seem to be against the point of the Game Pad, but it really increases the flow, playability, and fun of the game. I feel like that's the best way to play the game and that the game was designed with that control method in mind.

I'm still wading in the shallow waters, but yeah, I don't know how they missed that so much. I didn't play the Demo, maybe that helped other folks out a lot, and I know there are some ITEMS you can get (ie: Treasure Sensors), so maybe that'll clean things up a bit? I kinda feel like I'm just out there destroying EVERYTHING, and hoping that I pick up some stuff. Nothing scientific about it, I'm just rolling these cities.
01/31/14, 00:31
Lol, I had no idea you could recruit enemies! Just tried it today - it makes gathering a larger team so much easier.
01/31/14, 03:01
@achhibbar

If you rely on that technique to build up your group then you'll want to hold off on buying the upgrade that makes the wonder-liner damage enemies. I frequently found myself accidently killing enemies that I intended to recruit thanks to that upgrade. And as far as I know, there is no way to turn it off.

I have a question for everyone. What is your favorite Unite Morph? You may want to put it in spoilers. I found myself favoring the sword for a majority of the game thanks to its long reach and fairly good damage output. Towards the end of the game, however, I discovered that the hand's high damage justified its slowness, and began to use that the most.

@Hero_Of_Hyrule

Are you sure? I'm pretty sure there is ON/OFF stuff for nearly everything. Check your menus back at the ranch!

I'm using the Hand the most, I think. Still early on though.

This game is astonishing, it has me hopelessly hooked in a way that even SMW3D did not.
As soon as you finish a mission, you want to replay it with new powers and more skillfully than before.

And I say this despite it being downright awful in some places (the indoor part before the baseball section and when trying to take control of the hydra head boss). The baseball thing I eventually worked out, but I never would have guessed you would need to draw a 2nd wonder line into the head of that monster.

Crazy-ass game.

@achhibbar Agreed completely about those two sections. The first one was annoying to control, the second wasn't clear at all (I actually had to look it up on GameFaqs to make sure I had the right idea: I did, but it just wouldn't activate correctly for whatever reason). I was also disappointed that one potentially cool section was hampered by some big time slowdown.

I've been sort of playing the game off and on. I enjoy it, definitely, but I'm not quite hooked for whatever reason. I'm still not completely sure if what I'm doing is the right way to play, as I'm getting hit pretty regularly. And that's after watching some great little tutorial vids on YouTube, too.

At $24, I had to order this game... of course, I still don't know when I'll actually get around to playing it.
02/03/14, 22:42
@Hinph Haha, that $24 deal and a $260 (tax included) deal on a Mario/Luigi U bundle are what finally pushed me over the edge on getting a Wii U. And yet I'm more excited about having a portable Kirby's Dream Course to play during TV time...
