Injustice: Gods Among Us. New DC Universe Fighting game by Nether Realm Studios
News reported by

A new franchise headed by Warner Brother's Nether Realm Studios (Mortal Kombat) will be unleashed on the Wii U, PS3, and XBOX 360 in 2013. The trailer shows Batman, Superman, Flash, Wonderwoman, Solomon Grundy, and Harley Quinn doing battle. The tagline reads "What if our greatest heroes became our greatest threat?" I guess will have to wait for E3 to find out more about this game. Hopefully, the fighting mechanics will be more Mortalk Kombat (2011) and less MK vs. DC.

BURBANK, Calif. – May 31, 2012 – What if our greatest heroes became our greatest threat? Warner Bros. Interactive Entertainment and DC Entertainment today announced Injustice: Gods Among Us, an all-new game in development by award-winning NetherRealm Studios, creators of the definitive fighting game franchise Mortal Kombat. The game is scheduled for release in 2013 for the Xbox 360® video game and entertainment system from Microsoft, PlayStation®3 computer entertainment system and the Wii U™ system from Nintendo.

Injustice: Gods Among Us debuts as a bold new fighting game franchise that introduces a deep, original story featuring a large cast of favorite DC Comics icons such as Batman, Harley Quinn, Solomon Grundy, Superman, The Flash, Wonder Woman and many others. Set in a world where the lines between good and evil are blurred, players will experience heroes and villains engaging in epic battles on a massive scale.

"With Injustice: Gods Among Us, we are creating an all-new franchise with incredible battles set in the DC Comics Universe," said Martin Tremblay, President, Warner Bros. Interactive Entertainment. "NetherRealm Studios is the extremely talented team behind the latest Mortal Kombat hit and it is developing a game unlike any other in the fighting genre."

"We can't wait to reveal Injustice: Gods Among Us because it will give our fans and gamers an epic experience as they battle like gods as their favorite DC Comics villains and heroes," said Ed Boon, Creative Director, NetherRealm Studios. "Our team is excited to make a fighting game that is filled with fast-paced action, incredible story-telling and iconic DC Comics characters."

You just can't make iconic heroes like Superman and Wonder Woman and The Flash grimdark without it looking ridiculous. Not in something as short and narrative-deficient as a fighting game. Didn't EA try something like that with their Marvel Imperfects fighting game last gen?

Capcom handles the Marvel license perfectly in their fighting games: narrow in on each character's primary trait, throw in some fanservice quips, and make everybody equally over-the-top in combat. Even without Raiden and Liu Kang and Reptile, this game reeks of Mortal Kombat, and that doesn't fit with the Justice League at all.

I posted this in that other Wii U thread and nobody cared

Could be cool. I'm not big on fighting games (and even less on Mortal Kombat) but I'm interested since it's DC characters. Will keep an eye out.

It looks like it'll play like MK vs DC. A game I have/had no interest in playing. I'll pass.

Edit: I change my mind. Color me interested.

I'm guessing you didn't play Mortal Kombat 2011 then? The 8+ hour campaign mode redefined storytelling in the fighting genre.

Color me stoked.

@New Forms I didn't play MK9, but that's still just Johnny Cage and Sonya and Shang Tsung being Johnny Cage and Sonya and Shang Tsung. It's not a comically-armored Flash getting punched into space by Superman doing his best to look menacing.

Super Smash Bros Brawl says hello.

I'm just looking at it from the angle of what Nether Realm was able to do in the storytelling dept. with MK9. They set the bar so far above anything that came before (or after) it, that the idea of having DC characters pull off a convincing and entertaining campaign is not only possible, but highly likely.

The seamless, load-free transitions from captivating cut scenes to standard fighting mode is unlike anything I've ever seen in the genre. It was unequivocally groundbreaking for the genre in its vision and execution.

Oh, you.

@New Forms Fair enough. I don't believe in this Injustice game getting pulled off, but I'm certainly more interested in trying out MK9 now.

I thought MK Vs. DC was pretty fun. Particularly the story mode. Good, stupid, dumb fun.

Yeah, the costumes look kinda odd. And Superman looking the way he does is... dumb.

Batman seems to be the only one that doesn't really stand out as being out-of-place. (though his apparent super-strength is out of place)

I dunno, I'll with hold judgement until I play it. Hopefully Green Lantern will be playable!

Wow, they're really pushing the whole use the arena as a weapon tactic. The fact that different characters utilize the arenas in slightly different ways makes it pretty cool. Not only will you have to master a fighter's move set but also the arenas. Interesting.
