Top 10 Favorite Kirby powers [top ten]

I’m sure everyone has their own favorite Kirby powers, so I thought why not post some of my favorites from the pink one’s fabled library of games. These were picked based on form, function, and personal taste.

I decided to ignore Kirby’s various abilities from the Smash Bros. Series, so you won’t find Wario Kirby or Mario Kirby on this list.

Flaming sword
Appears in: Kirby 64: The Crystal Shards (N64, 2000)

Kirby’s had various sword techniques throughout his career. This is one notable because just walking around with it is deadly to those around you. It’s on fire! Kirby can even throw it across the screen, while another sword materializes in his possession.

Fireworks
Appears in: Kirby 64: The Crystal Shards (N64, 2000)

Kirby explodes various times in the air, and the ensuing fireworks are not only a colorful display, but it also harms enemies surrounding it.

Missile launcher
Appears in: Kirby 64: The Crystal Shards (N64, 2000)

Simple enough. Kirby can launch an infinite number of heat-seeking missiles from his mouth, three at a time.

Tank Robot
Appears in: Kirby’s Epic Yarn (Wii, 2010)

Kirby becomes a giant tank robot who can hover, shoot missiles and throw punches with ease. This all-powerful contraption is limited to a handful of stages, but enemies simply are torn apart in the fabric world.

Fighter
Appears in: Kirby Super Star (SNES, 1996)

Kirby becomes a martial arts expert fighting his way into the Street Fighter ranks long before his career in the Smash Bros. series.

Crash
Appears in: Kirby’s Adventure (NES, 1992)

Kirby’s had some limited use abilities that pretty much guarantee instant death to all on-screen enemies. Although I did like the cook ability, which also appeared as Kirby’s Final Smash in Super Smash Bros. Brawl, Crash is my favorite because Kirby simply unleashes a massive explosion. Just before the explosion, Kirby freezes everything on the screen in place before flying across the screen erratically at a rapid pace.

UFO
Appears in: Kirby’s Adventure (NES, 1992)

A rare power-up in itself, I’ll always have a fond memory of this power-up. I enjoyed the fact that you could have a variety of different lasers and beams depending on how you long you charged the weapon.
UFO returns in Kirby’s Epic Yarn, but with new controls and functions.

Dual lightsaber
Appears in: Kirby 64: The Crystal Shards (N64, 2000)

Now Kirby can join the dark side. Kirby even does a little spin move every time he attacks.

Ninja
Appears in: Kirby Super Star (SNES, 1996)

Everyone knows ninjas are stealthy assassins to be feared. Ninja Kirby can stick to the walls, hide in the shadows, launch a barrage of flying daggers, and use flying kicks. He’s not particularly powerful, but he’s very quick, and enemies won’t know what hit them before it’s too late.

Sword
Appears in: Kirby’s Adventure (NES, 1992)

Not as flashy as some of Kirby’s more elaborate sword techniques, yet this is the noblest of all. It was the classic Sword Kirby who had an epic encounter with Meta Knight in Kirby’s Adventure. Plus, later versions would feature the green hat, reminding everyone of a famous sword-wielding hero from another Nintendo franchise!

So that’s it. Some honorable mentions that didn’t make the list include the rocket and dolphin (sorry Paleo) from Epic Yarn.

The best part is, we’ve already had our first glimpse at what the next Kirby adventure will be like.

How can you not love a character like this?

What about "swallowing and pooping out guys" in Smash Bros.?
02/26/11, 05:26
@Mr_Mustache That's worth mentioning!

Unfortunately for Kirby I am leaving his Smash Bros. career out of the equation.

That's actually hilarious, I hadn't thought about that before. Kirby games involve Kirby inhaling and basically digesting his foes to gain their ability.
Yet in Smash Bros. he "poops" them out when copying their ability.

Oh, TriforceBun, I wonder if you will like my list. Aren't you like the biggest Kirby fan on NW?

Double spiky from Crystal Shards. is my favorite.

Plasma = Kirby with a Megabuster, plus a shield, and it shoots through walls.

I do like this list! Nice idea for a top ten. My favorites of the ones listed are UFO, Sword, Dual Lightsaber, and Fireworks!

More favorites of mine are Bomb (Kirby Super Star), Yo-Yo (Kirby Super Star), Smash (Kirby and the Amazing Mirror) and Ninja Star (Kirby 64).
02/26/11, 06:52
@autokymatic Plasma? That one is nice, you just have to swivel your finger quickly across the d-pad to charge it up. I like that one a lot.

@TriforceBun Thanks! You have some good mentions too... Ninja Star from Kirby 64 is especially nice, you can't even see those shurikens since they're so fast.

@roykoopa64

Oops! Yessir, you are correct.

Nice list! The dolphin in KEY was my favorite part of that whole game. So much fun
02/26/11, 08:01
Exploding Ninja Star Kirby, Smash Kirby, and Biker Kirby(riding Wheelie!) were my favorites. I wish they would bring back the mixing from 64, but still keep his trademark abilities as main ones as the bases.
02/26/11, 08:31
It's not a Kirby game, but it was from HAL, so...

It was better in Melee, but it is still ridiculously awesome to drop out of the sky with a Warlock Punch in Brawl.

Hammer was always my favorite (in Super Star, anyway). That charged hit was just so badass, as was the somersaults, twirls, and throw.

What an awesome thread idea, though I'm saddened my favorite didn't make it into your list ;p

I'm a fan of anything ice related in video games, and Ice Kirby's adorableness is no exception

@Dillo64 and @Simbabbad

I agree that Kirby 64 offered so many possibilities, making it fun to experiment just to see what kinds of strange combinations you could get.
Kirby Squeak Squad let you mix abilities inside of Kirby's magical belly, but they didn't actually create all-new abilities, which was disappointing.

And @Simbabbad, that's a great video. The narrator is pretty good, even allowing his "word fumbles" to be a part of the humor.

Fire + ice occurs at 7:17 in that video. He gives that ability a 1 out of 5. ... so useless.

Great list! To me, nothing beats Fighting Kirby. The refrigerator in Kirby 64 is also pretty kickass, not only does it look hilarious, but it harms enemies AND gives you health items.

@Simbabbad

I started watching that video but pretty quickly realized that I didn't want to spoil the transformations for myself. I will play that game some day. I guess I should finish Yoshi Story (not to mention StarTropics) first.

I don't recall Luigi ever having a sword. Is it in Super Paper Mario? Pretty cool! Looks like I have to play that game as well.

Just had to jump in this thread to make a few corrections.

Actually, THIS is what the next Kirby game will be like:

NOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOO!

Worst Nintendo game ever.

No. The worst Nintendo game ever was:

Gawd, what a steaming pile that was.

Alright, got the corrections out of the way. Now as to my contribution to the thread:

Blowing away all the enemies on screen with eardrum-shattering decibels = awesome.

Kirby 64 isn't a very long or difficult game, it doesn't have as much content or challenge as Yoshi's Story. Very relaxing, cute and funny. Great when you're sick (like I am now, coughing and feverish) or depressed.
Like I am now!

You're mistaken. Yoshi's Story is an excellent game and a much better platformer than DKCR, incidentally.

Your standards of what you would consider an excellent game is *quite* different than mine. Yoshi's Story was an insult to the franchise, and Nintendo fans as a whole, IMHO.

@GameDadGrant

Ah! I forgot all about the new Kirby DS game in the works. I don't know much about it, but you're right, it will likely release before the new Wii game.

Um, I don't hate Yoshi's Story, but I definitely didn't like it as much as Super Paper Mario.
