How many Neo Geo games have you bought on Switch? [roundtable]

I am absolutely LOVING the clockwork release of classic (and a few not-so-classic) Neo Geo titles. What a great way to pad out the launch library! (There were a few niggles in the initial releases, but Hamster has been quick to update and improve them.)

I've always been a sucker for arcade games, and these titles work so damned well on the Switch, what with the pick up and play nature, the beautiful screen, and the instant two-player capability. I only wish that both the home and arcade versions of each game were included in the purchase.

So far, I've picked up Shock Troopers, which is AMAZING, and Neo Turf Masters, which seems pretty cool. I'll probably pick up some Metal Slug games and KoF '98 (although the arcade version is somewhat limited) in the near future.

My most-wanted future titles are Baseball Stars 2, Windjammers, Samurai Shodown 2, Magical Drop III, Puzzle Bobble, and Super Dodge Ball. I also hope that Hamster starts including other platforms and publishers in their arcade release series. Namco, Capcom, Konami, etc. I would love to carry a fully-loaded portable 2P arcade unit with me everywhere that I go.

Do you guys care about this series at all? Which games have you picked up?

Neo What?

Is that like some Indie developer?

In all seriousness, I never played them originally, so I didn't even look at them now. I don't understand, though, why these VC games are up but no other VC games are. Seems super weird.

EDIT: Oh, except Magical Drop. I played that in arcades as a youngster and probably spent hundreds of dollars in quarters.

@J.K. Riki
It's not technically part of Nintendo's Virtual Console. It's an extension of Hamster's Arcade Archive series on other consoles.

If you enjoyed Magical Drop, you'd probably also like Puzzle Bobble (a.k.a. Bust-a-Move). And, if you like old-school co-op action games, Metal Slug (SNK's awesome take on Contra) and Shock Troopers (SNK's awesome take on Commando) are pretty amazing. Beautiful pixel art, as well.

I think I've bought four games so far. The King of Fighters '98, The King of Fighters '94, World Heroes Perfect, and Metal Slug 3. Probably gonna pick up the original Metal Slug soon. Will totally get Puzzle Bobble if it comes to Switch.

@J.K. Riki

Neo Geo! Neo Geo! Four bright buttons and two joysticks! Neo Geo! Neo Geo! Cool red cab, and a name that sticks!

Is Puzzle Bobble up??

I bought Metal Slug 3. It's great, outside of the weird way quarters/continues work (just press a button to continue!). Wish there was some way to limit lives without having to just tell your buddy "Don't continue!"

None. Never been a fan of arcade-style games and those seem to have been the main attraction on Neo Geo.

@Mop it up

Even Puzzle Bobble?

Puzzle Bobble is NOT up, btw.

@Anand

Well, it should be.

But it started as an arcade game, so I was wondering what @Mop it up's stance was on that particular title.

I only ask because @Mop it up is pretty dang awesome at Tetris, another puzzle game.

I haven't yet...mostly because Zelda is sucking my time up. I do want to try Metal Slugs, and I would buy Baseball Stars 2 and Puzzle Bobble in a heartbeat.

I don't think I've ever played a native Neo Geo game, mostly because I don't like fighters...
04/13/17, 16:11
@GameDadGrant Is that similar to the Bust-a-Move games? If so, I couldn't get into those.

Did we play Tetris at some point, or are you referencing something else? Tough to remember these details sometimes...

@Mop it up
Same game, different name. Puzzle Bobble = Bust-a-Move.

@Mop it up

Yeah, it's exactly Bust-A-Move. Couldn't get into though, eh? I guess it's not really a puzzle game, since all you're doing is matching colors. More of a shooting game, I guess?

I don't believe we've played Tetris simultaneously, but since you're on my 3DS Friend List, your high scores showed up in my Tetris Ultimate game. In the "TETRIS FEED" menu. Your Marathon Top Score of 279,724 is something I can't seem to top...! Impressive work. Well done.

I downloaded King of Fighters 98. I'm waiting on Samurai Showdown. I wonder why they released the fourth one first.

@sirmastersephiroth

I was wondering the same thing...! It's like SNK is doing the opposite of what Nintendo did with the VC (release games in sequential order). SNK seems to be just throwing darts at a wall and whatever hits, gets uploaded to the eShop!

@sirmastersephiroth@GameDadGrant
It seems to me that they're releasing the best/most important series entries first. Also, Hamster's handling it, rather than SNK. So maybe that's why.
04/15/17, 20:50
@Anand

Hamster handling?!?

04/15/17, 22:13
@GameDadGrant
Why do kids keep pet rats, again?
04/15/17, 22:57
None.

What is the one that I should definitely get?

@Anand Well, my cousin kept them to feed to his snake. I guess those weren't really "pets" though.

@Zero
I assume that you're already familiar with the Metal Slug series, so get Shock Troopers.

Shock Troopers is to Commando as Metal Slug is to Contra.

...what's Commando?!
