StreetPass games are evil. [roundtable]

I know, I know. They're fun. They entice you to walk around with your 3DS. They're 'social'. Some the newer games actually have pretty fun mechanics...

But they are evil. StreetPass games are choking the life out of 3DS multiplayer gaming. At occasions where people could be having amazing EIGHT-player Mario Kart matches or fantastic TEN-player Band Brothers sessions... they are spending thirty minutes getting fucking puzzle pieces. Not even piecing together the puzzle! Just getting the pieces!

Yea, StreetPass games are evil. And I know that it is hard to fight the temptation, brothers. I've felt it, too. But next time you see that alluring little green light, instead of retreating into your solitary StreetPass shell, why not venture outside of your gilded cage, and engage the world, instead?

(In a multiplayer Mario Kart race, I mean.)

I haven't got a StreetPass in over a year, so I wouldn't know!

Even with Relay?

I get, like, eight a day now! It totally eats up my transit gaming time!

The reason so many people waste so much time is that they want to "clear out" the entry area when it maxes out so they don't miss newcomers. Personally I think Nintendo needs to just let you have as many people in your entry area as you want. Why not? Go to some huge event, have fun at the event, come home, have 157 people waiting in your entry area, and have at it.

About the actual games, I did go and buy all the new ones... and I never play them. It just takes too much damn time to keep up with all of them. I finished every path in Find Mii / Find Mii II awhile back so now all I ever do is Puzzle Quest.

I can get ten a day pretty easily. Was going to go for all the achievements, but decided that it wasn't really worth it playing the same thing over and over again. Find Mii and its sequel were fun for a while, but I'm ready to take a break now.

@Anand I have to take a decent walk out of my way through the city to get to the nearest relay listed on Nintendo's site. And the last few times I went there, I didn't get any anyway! I've had Nintendo Zone alerts pop up there, but not in a while. Their transmitter might be broken or something. Maybe it's for the best, I feel weird standing outside McDonalds, gesturing my 3DS at their windows.

And then after a few weeks of nothing I usually stop carrying the 3DS around, since I get almost no gaming time in my commute anyway.

Well I've pretty much wrapped up Mii Force and Monster Mansion, I don't have all the plaza tickets but I feel like I've played them enough and they were taking up way to much of my time each day (and besides I think I have every hat that I want, there's nothing good left to buy, I mean I just bought the spaghetti hat out of desperation, spaghetti hat?!).

That said I only need 20 more plants to compete my journal in Flower Town, no way I'm stopping that, and in Warrior's Way I'm finally about to conquer the world (although that final boss cheats)!

What a coincidence, I'm playing Flower Town just as I clicked on this thread, and WHAT DO YOU KNOW...I breed a new color instead of a whole new breed. I agree, these games are evil. Oh and thanks a lot, Anand.

I feel like those percentages lie, any seed under like 70% I just throw in the garbage, or sell actually, but if the game would let me I'd throw them in the garbage because that's where they belong!

Nothing is a frustrating as Warrior's Way though, nothing, it took me two months to raise enough troops to take on the Emperor, and then what do you know it's just totally random and lose the dice roll.

They may be evil, or they may not be. Either way, I'm still enjoying playing them. And I want all the different hats and outfits for my Mii.

I accept this evil, and live with it in harmony.

They're a tiny step away from a Skinner Box (I know Gui has feelings about this stuff).

Monster Manor and Mii Force are full-on games, although I hardly go back to Mii force anymore.
Monster Manor is by-far my favourite (barring Puzzle Swap, which is quick and painless).

Yeah, they're pretty evil. At the meetups most of people's time was spent emptying out their Streetpasses. BOOOO! I I want to play 4-player Tetris! 2-player Yoshi Touch 'n Go! 8-player Mario Kart! COME ON, PEOPLE!

Ohhh, a green light!

I never get together with people who have a 3DS so problem solved! ...Wait...

@Zero I think the ten-person limit exists because there isn't enough memory to fit any more. Maybe they could increase the limit a bit, but there's certainly no way there's enough memory for over 100 people, especially considering how many games each person can have data for.

Someone has been talking to Stephen....

I usually get a 1 or 2 a day on my commute (3-5 if I'm lucky). I usually spend half an hour at the end of the day clearing it out while I watch TV. It's a nice way to unwind after coming home.

Embrace the evil.

Where do you live? I almost feel like passing by just so you get get a streetpass. Must be a desert or nuclear bomb test site or something.

@Shadowlink

Nah evil is too strong a word. It is manipulative though. It's a means to get people to take their systems with them when they otherwise might not. That's why there are very deliberate mechanisms in place like it being random, capping out and needing to be cleared out, and the general concept of earning play coins by just walking around with it even if you don't get streetpasses.

I don't think there's anything wrong with participating in that but seeing what the goal is I just have no interest in using it. There's motivation for doing it more and more but with no end game. It's similar in that regard to the unlocks system of most multiplayer games now.

The end game is to fill in every puzzle, duh.
12/11/13, 09:12
@Zero

They probably will just continue to put out new puzzles.
12/11/13, 09:28
Obviously. It's a metaphor for all of your hopes and dreams in life. Even if you obtain one, another will just pop up. You will never be satisfied.

@deathly_hallows
Sometimes you can tell what plant you are going to get based on the seeds. Of course there are moments when the seeds are the same for two (or more) of the results...

Warrior's Way is easily the worst game of the bunch and I already conquered the world thrice and got all but the "multiplayer" achievements. The last boss is completely luck-based. Second time I beat him took me forever, last time I took him down on my first try.

I really enjoy all the other games though.

@Mop it up

Why couldn't the StreetPass queue be saved in the internal flash memory or on the SD card if you get more than 10 StreetPasses? There are ways around the memory limit, but Nintendo doesn't seem interested in fixing this.
