Nintendo - "Every game for Wii U/3DS' will be available digitally"

Curious as to what this would mean for a game like NintendoLand if it were packed in with the Wii U as a disk.

GM: Can you download a game right away when you see it on your Miiverse? Will you still have physical games too then?

Cindy: Yes. What we said is that every game for the Wii U, and this is true for the Nintendo 3DS too, will be available in both packaged as well as digital. It’s really about choice. What I remember as a parent, I prefer the download because I won’t lose the disk. But some people thrive on [having the physical game], to each his own.

What's the storage medium for the Wii U again?

Some of the best news yet!

Hmmm... lots of opportunities for kids to swipe their parents' credit cards to get games. I mean, I might have. Contra was awesome, dude!

I wonder if Nintendo will ever do Steam-style sales? I wouldn't bet money on it, at least until it's time for some Nintendo Selects offerings, but it is an interesting thought.

That's freakin' sweet!

Huh? Seriously? Every Wii U game will be available for digital distribution? Sorry, I'll believe that when I see it.

I just hope they can deal with everyone downloading games when they launch. I get a feeling this might go a bit wrong on launch week/Christmas week.

@kriswright

Wouldn't count on it. Hell, even Steam's direct competitors on PC refuse to do "%75 off everything" fire sales.

Great news! I wonder if it would be possible to retroactively put games on the eShop. I'd love to have BIT.TRIP SAGA always with me.

If you download a lot of retail games you'll need an external hard drive for sure. Kind of sucks that there isn't one already built into the Wii U.

Hmm... If the external drive option for the WiiU doesn't have a SATA or Ethernet cable connection available, wouldn't a USB connection bottleneck game-reads?

I just thought of something though, this may be in the context of her speaking of Nintendo's own games, not necessarily 3rd party games as well. Tough to say.

Wow, talk about taking advantage of late night drinking and spur-of-the-moment cravings.

Beware!

PS360 don't do this right? Not for every title at least. Right?

Good news. But bad news for anyone wanting to go over 8 gigs.

I will stick to discs for a home console.

For 3DS this makes me very happy.

@carlosrox

Not all games as far as I know. This would be quite a feat if Nintendo pulled it off...

Can we expect earlier games like Pilot Wings out for download?

The problem I have with this in the UK is that games tend to retail at around £39.99 at brick and mortar stores yet they have a rrp of £49.99. I wonder if they will appear digitally at the top end.

I'm telling you, I read on GAF that it will use Bluray discs. Who knows if they're going to be tweaked by Nintendo or not, but that's what I read.

That's cool, though unless there is any real advantage to digital download (like greatly discounted prices) I will almost always get the retail version instead.

How many retail games could 8gb hold? A few?
