Nintendo Download for May 3, 2012 (still no 3DS VC Updates).

Nintendo is at least being consistent in their weekly eShop updates in North America. Continuing the trend, there are no new Virtual Console games on the 3DS in this week's Nintendo Download.

eShop Exclusives
Bird Mania 3D
(3D Software Download - Teyon, $1.99)

DSiWare (also available in the eShop)
Amoebattle
(Grab LLC, 500 points/$4.99)

Wii Shop Channel
Super Hang-On
(Virtual Console Arcade - SEGA, 800 points)

Source.

Honest question: can someone find a date since the eShop has launched where Nintendo has simultaneously launched a 3D Download and a Virtual Console game (aside from the launch where ExciteBike and Super Mario Land launched together)? Because I can't think of one...

You're asking a big one there cause I don't think anyone would even be able to find a date for the last 3DS VC release. It's sort of like Super Mario Bros. cause it was so long ago that no one remembers when it actually launched

People who have had review codes for Amoebattles are tweeting pretty positively about it. I expect scores of at least 8 and over...

@VofEscaflowne

I think it's a fair question, and someone in a real journalistic position (read: not my anonymous monicker on message board) needs to call out Nintendo of America about it and try to get an answer out of them.

Amoebattle got good scores on iPhone.

Then again I have no idea how people score iPhone games. Like, do they detract because of crappy controls, or is it just a part of the hardware that gets accepted?

Well, it's an RTS and supposedly the touch controls work well on iPhone, which is at least more believable than good platformer controls or something. And they should work even better on DSiWare.

Well, I just beat Bionic Commando so I'm in the mood for another VC game. Too bad NoA are incompetent.

Hm, still no VC, eh? That's... actually alright. I think next week I'm gonna download Blaster Master: Enemy Below. I've been meaning to play that game, so maybe I'll finally jump on that. I wanna download Link's Awakening as well. There's no reason for me to, since I have the cartridge still, but... something about owning digitally on my 3DS and having it on me "at all times" seems appealing.

Y'know, with the lack of VC releases, it's going to be really easy to amass a 100% perfect collection of all the games available!

Honestly, this is why I'm a little worried about retail games coming to the eShop. With NOA content to release one eShop-exclusive title each week, will retail games just be added into that slot, fighting with eShop-exclusives and VC games? Honestly, it wouldn't surprise me.

By the way, GoNintendo posted a couple of upcoming DSiWare and 3DS release dates, and it looks like we won't be getting a VC game next week either.

@rebonack

It's become apparent to me that Nintendo of America doesn't give a rip about the Virtual Console. They're already treating it as second rate to the new, 3DS Digital Software. I get why from a business standpoint, but the eShop is less than a year old and it already seems like the 3DS VC is dead.

Why haven't the rest of the NES games been updated yet? Why are there nearly 30 more titles (excluding Ambassador titles) available in Japan than there are in North America?

What the hell is Super Hang-on? Sounds like an epic diggle berry.

@Abdooooo

LOL!

Wait, do you really not know what Super Hang-On is?

@GameDadGrant

Huh. So that's what it is. For some reason I had that title confused with whatsitcalled, Thunder Blade? The Space Harrier reskin.

Is Super Hang-On on any Sega anthology? I don't recall ever playing it.

Bird Mania review

Doesn't sound all that hot... but it is also cheap. The trailer looked boring as heck.

@GameDadGrant

I had no idea what the game was either. Reminds me of Pole Position, except w/ bikes.

Yep, I might get it too. If people say it has a decent endless mode, it's an impulse buy at 2 bucks. Love that price point.

I had no idea what Super Hang-On was either. I've seen the name in listings of various Sega games, but it's not exactly a name that sounds very appealing

Europe is getting Game & Watch Gallery 2?! That's one of my favorite games ever! As cool as the first G&WG was, the second one in particular I think is incredible. Almost every single game in it I think is amazing to play, both in the modern and classic modes, and it's just a ton of nice, cheery fun NOA needs to stop their shit and release it here now!

Amoebattle is effing awesome. Definitely check it out if you like RTS and, like me, feel like the DS' potential for RTS games was sorely squandered.

Game has been in development for a while, and the dev team is a group of huge RTS fans. One of them had experience in making Command & Conquer 3 and 4. It turned out to a solid, mobile friendly RTS that anyone can pick up and play, but it also has deep enough gameplay for RTS fans to be satisfied. The design is really great.

That, and the game was created by an IGN member, codetainment. He was the President of Intrinsic Games (Divergent Shift, Penguin Patrol) before they merged with Grab Games (Bloons). I didn't think twice about supporting an old friend.
