Nintendo Announces Healthy Holiday Sales Figures

As everyone looks ahead to the possibilities in store for 2010, Nintendo of America is looking to extend the glow of the holidays with some fresh December sales information. The following items were announced by Nintendo President Satoru Iwata in Japan:

* Although official U.S. sales data for December and all of 2009 will be announced by the NPD Group on Jan. 14, it appears that U.S. consumers responded enthusiastically to Nintendo’s Wii™ home console in December. Nintendo estimates that December sales in the United States will exceed 3 million units.
* Nintendo estimates that the portable Nintendo DS™ lineup, including the Nintendo DSi™ video game system, set a new all-time calendar-year U.S. sales record for any console or hand-held system.
* Nintendo software also continued to perform well. Although the NPD Group will provide the full sales numbers for each game, Nintendo estimates that lifetime U.S. sales of New Super Mario Bros.™ Wii are approaching 4 million. The game, which is the first Super Mario Bros. game to include simultaneous four-player action, launched in the United States on Nov. 15.

“The millions of people who bought Nintendo hardware during the holidays can look forward to enjoying great games on those systems now and in the future,” said Cammie Dunaway, Nintendo of America’s executive vice president of Sales & Marketing. “The Legend of Zelda: Spirit Tracks for Nintendo DS, and Wii Fit Plus and New Super Mario Bros. Wii are all currently providing Nintendo fans with amazing experiences and fun adventures for the whole family.”

Now if they'd just stop abandoning the hardcore gamer and ruining the industry!

Nice work, Nintendo. Very deserving.

Now....why can't Shattered Memories or A Boy And His Blob sell 4 million? That's the one thing that really pisses me off about gaming. Whether or not a game is good, the most popular fucking thing sells the best.

Now...I know I just answered my own question there but.........FUCK. Can't other games sell well too? Does it REALLY just have to be the Modern Warfares, Marios, Halos, Gears Of Wars, Mario Karts, Wii Fits, and Rock Bands??

I'm very very happy Nintendo is doing well and I'm loving those Mario numbers but I really wanna see other games that deserve success to do well also. I'll be ECSTATIC when Half Life, Dead Space, and Other M get sales like that. That's what I really wanna see.

Side question. Reggie didn't win his bet did he? Oh well. I actually thought Ninty could do it. What is MW2 sitting at now?

Also. Did anyone read that article about asshole pirates? Apparently NSMBWii has lost about a million sales cuz it's been downloaded or burned just that many times. Also, Modern Warfare 2 was downloaded 4 fucking million times. That's ridiculous. That's probably a sales record in itself. Son of a bitch pirates. I hate them, that's just utter bullshit.

I recall Reggie's bet being that NSMB Wii would outsell MW2 on one platform over the holidays. Obviously he was referring to the PS3 and I think he is going to win that bet.

Yeah but it's still skewed. Horror isn't the most popular genre ever (but.....tons and tons of people still go see it) but there are tons of successful horror movies and series.

For games there's pretty much only Silent Hill and Resident Evil (and maybe Dead Space but it's clearly hasn't reached Mainstream status which is a shame) with the former quickly dying. I don't know why videogames are still so taboo. Popular games can outsell movies but anything below the level of popularity of something like Mario, Halo, GTA, GOW, GOW, COD, Sports Crap, Rock Dj Band Hero 19 will start to suffer. It's just totally screwed up.

I wonder when games will mirror the movie industry and quality will start to mean something.
In a hypothetical movie videogame world I doubt something like Rockband would get much respect. Rockband is to games what 17 again is to movies, in my opinion at least. Dead Space is to videogames what Alien is to movies. Alien did fantastically well and is respected by everyone with a brain. Dead Space has haters and even though it sold pretty well it could and should have done a LOT better. The gaming industry really needs to wake up and mature and realize what quality is. If Shattered Memories existed in the imaginary movie videogame world you can bet your ass it would have better than failure sales. If Where The Wild Things were also in this world than you could bet your ass it'd be a niche title that failed. Now you could argue it's kind of a niche movie but I doubt the movie failed and it sure as shit was critically accalimed.

Hear hear. Freaking pirates. Go buy the games, you bums. If you can't afford them, find a cheaper hobby or get a job. >:(
Can you imagine if the same people stole groceries the same way they do games? It would be non essential stuff like chips and soda and they'd justify it somehow by saying "They aren't healthy for me, so why would I pay for them?" It's the same thing. Someone worked to grow and produce that food, just as someone worked to make the games. If it isn't worth it, don't eat/play it... Heck, even RENT it, then someone is getting paid back.

Such BS...

They justify it cuz they're not material things and because they're stupid.

Downloading music is juuuuuuuuuuuuust fine but stealing a cd from a store is WRONG. OH SO WRONG!! It's a victimless crime, like PUNCHING someone in the dark.

Having been punched in the dark more times than I'd like to remember, it's terrible. You never see it coming...

Holy hell. 3... million?

NPD shall be interesting indeed. Will Matt cry more tears of semen? That is the true question.

EDIT And did they just say that the DS and DSi broke like every console sales record like... ever? Did I read that right?!

WTF.

It's spin. It's probably like growth record for the quarter over last year's earnings.
