A 3DS version of Okamiden has popped up on Capcoms press page alongside the current DS page leading people to believe this is either one of those unfortunate mistakes or the real deal. Since then some snooping has been done in the websites html code which has revealed some more interesting information. Below is the article from PixlBit.com As many of you know by now, I programmed the PixlBit website and professionally and educationally, I am a programmer. More specifically, a web application programmer. Needless to say, I know a thing or two about the construction of online interfaces, as well as the databases that back them. With this knowledge, I did some elementary snooping into the front end html and request strings for the Capcom press site to find out as much as I could about last night's interesting Okamiden 3DS posting.
As Nate pointed out in his article, Okamiden is listed twice on the web site, once for the DS and once for the 3DS. Typically, as people add data to a database, they use what's called an incrementing primary key to keep track of each unique entry in the database. Capcom's press site seems to obey this development paradigm and they use said key to call up information for each individual game.
Getting to the point, Okamiden DS has a key 206, while Okamiden 3DS has a key 256, meaning they likely weren't added around the same time, as fifty titles sit between them.
Knowing that the Capcom site uses this key to identify titles, I simply incremented the number by one each time to see what titles came up between the two titles. Here's an abridged version of my results starting at 244:
244 - Mega Man Legends 3
245 - Resident Evil: The Mercenaries 3D
246 - Dead Rising 2: Case West
247+248 - Asura's Wrath (360&PS3)
249+250 - DMC (360&PS3)
251 - MaXplosion
252 - Zombie Cafe
253 - Herman the Hermit
254 - Devil May Cry 4 Refrain
255 - Who Wants to be a Millionaire 2011
256 - Okamiden 3DS
As you may already notice from the results, all of those titles are fairly new and have been released recently or will see release in the near future.
Here's the real doozy: The last added title in the entire system is Okamiden 3DS. No other titles have been added after it as of this posting. Even more telling, the Okamiden DS listing and Okamiden 3DS listing are linked.
Now, of course, this can still be a complete accident/mistake, but it seems awfully coincidental that the last added title in the system is Okamiden 3DS and it appears to be intentionally linked up to the other Okamiden posting that appeared 50 titles ahead of it.
At this point, I'm leaning more towards this being a legitimate addition to the database and not a mere accident. We'll have more if the story develops. Are we going to see a 3DS release of Okamiden and if so would this change any existing plans you had for picking up the game for the DS?URL to share (right click and copy) |

Hmmm, interesting. Wouldn't Okamiden need a significant overhaul to look like a 3DS game though? I can imagine dual Wii/3DS releases but not ports from DS up to 3DS. Seems like more trouble than it's worth...

This is a pretty cool find! Weren't we discussing how a game like Okami wouldn't work well with the 3DS effect? If there is a specific 3DS cart I'm interested to see what they improved for the game. Maybe added a second in game camera to produce the 3D effect?

Pretty awesome. I wouldn't mind a straight 60FPS port that had 3D. It would be kind of weird with the art style, though.

Okami's art really does deserve a platform capable of fully realizing it, I really do hope there is an upgraded 3DS version. Even if it doesn't take full advantage of the hardware, I'd much rather play the game on the 3DS if possible.

I'll double dip, because I can't resist the DS version at launch. If they officially announce it, it will be well after the launch of the DS version, which I will already own. :/

3DS would also allow for analog control.

Hmm, if so maybe I'd hold off for the 3DS game, mostly for the analog. Not sure that the painting style would translate as well to 3D.

Damn. If this turns out to be real I don't know what I'll do. On one hand I want Okamiden right away, but on the other hand why shouldn't I wait for it on the 3DS? Then again, I'm not getting a 3DS until they come out with the revised model, and Simba has made posts before stating that Okami's style might not really fit 3D all that well, so we'll have to wait and see if it looks any good.

I guess I'll have to wait and see and skip the DS game until we know more about the 3DS port. If it is the same game but in the 3DS format, I'll just get the DS version.

I think waiting for a revised 3DS is a fool's errand. They HAD to revamp the DS Phat. The 3DS is already slick looking, and they will not be able to keep them on shelves. Why would they consider a remake of a sure moneymaker?

Why would they consider a remake of a sure moneymaker? Not to mention the DS Lite didn't come out until mid-2006, at least a year and a half after the DS Phat (late 2004). I wouldn't want to wait that long to get a 3DS, especially because it DOES look very slick, and there are definitely some great games coming this year (something that couldn't be said for the DS' launch). I'm picking up Okamiden for DS, and if I really enjoy it, I might double-dip on the 3DS version (assuming it's not just an unaltered DS game on a 3DS cart or something), but we'll see what happens.
