In one of the greatest examples of "don't judge a book by its cover," Super Pitfall becomes the first Activision game published for a Nintendo console (and later re-released by FCI).
With excitement promised by the game's boxart to kids everywhere, many a rental went by the wayside with this devious action game. Tiny children were unceremoniously met with one of the most challenging games on record, the subject of "fun" hidden deep within it along with keys, warp zones, two companions, and the precious Raj diamond.
Armed only with a gun (and a very limited amount of amunition), Pitfall Harry (who now looks strikingly similar to Mario) must scour caves high and low, far and wide. Not only are some of them "hidden," but they're actually
hidden in the fact that they are
invisible! Through trial and error, several leaps of faith must be made to reach some of these triggers, but the execution isn't always 100% perfect. Sometimes nailing one on the head wasn't enough, even facing the opposite direction would often derail attempts.
For the OCD gamer, there are plenty of gold bars to collect and paths to remember (or maps to make... --or in the current age of gaming, walkthroughs to read). Death (by contact -- just once -- with nearly everything) will cost you a life and return you to the starting point of your journey. This is more common than expected as most of the enemies are too short to be easily dispatched via bullet. Frequent glitches don't sweeten the pot either.
Regarded as one of the worst games out there, most of that attributed to a high rate of difficulty and lack of instruction.
