Tradewest's multi-directional space shooter, developed by Rare.
The cold, black unknown lurks around each corner, and mysterious alien craft show more interest than you pay them. With this and the added threat of a devilish gravity / inertia combo pulling from every which way, navigating a rocky cavern in a tiny pod suddenly becomes a lot harder than originally projected.
Stranded on a distant planet (and eleven more to follow), players set out in a foreign environment looking for anything to help their wounded mothership return to form, and keep them from derelict status. An oft overlooked yet somewhat obvious influence to
Pikmin, players move around collecting pieces of the warpship, fuel, points, and other upgrades (including Shields for the pod). Using a towcable, once an item is picked up, it must be carried back to base; your movement pattern now adjusted to the additional weight you're carrying, making flight even more perilous. Once certain conditions are met, you advance to the next uncharted world. Flying for the "Federation of Space Loonies," should a pod meet some unfortunate demise, the pilot ejects the aircraft with a chance to return to base. He is at that point completely vulnerable, and at the mercy of the dark abyss.
Jetpac, the first game of the Jetman series, can be played in
Donkey Kong 64, another game developed by Rare.
Trivia: The boxart incorrectly refers to the games subtitle as "Warship."
