...it's totally tubular!Bif and Jet like rivers, and what better way for them to profess their love than in Tengen's unlicensed port of the arcade game? Floating down many real-life rivers (well, inspired by them..),
tributariasts* will appreciate the shout outs to each specific theme. The Colorado, Amazon, Nile, Yukon, Rio Grande, and Styx are all here (to name a few), and the banks of these waterways reflect the environment they're intended to relate to (for instance, you'll see sand and cactus on the Rio Grande run).
The game is constantly vertically scrolling (well traveled NES players will recognize the similarities to the Downhill event in
Skate or Die), but the player has some room to maneuver around on his own. With this, he can collect powerups and items (including the individual letters of "TOOBIN"), and also slide through gates for extra points. As with most games, there are a number of pitfalls to avoided, but he isn't at the mercy of them. With a limited supply of projectiles, he can throw them to stop a crocodile, fisherman, or whatever (like
Paperboy), or uncover some sort of treasure in a stationary object. While he can never come completely to a stop (this
is a live river, with rapids!), the player must be on his toes to avoid all obstacles -- sparingly throwing tin cans along the way -- before eventually being voluntarily sucked into a tiny whirlpool and advancing to the next venue.
As someone who recently floated down the Rock Springs in an innertube in Florida, I can tell you that this game is almost 100% accurate.
