Mutant Mudds (Nintendo 3DS eShop) Review (7.5)  by

You know, I was trying to think where to put this, but this is probably the best place...

Mutant Mudds “Grannie” Levels Dated for 3DS

Europe: Oct. 18th
North America: Oct. 25th
Levels: 20
Cost: FREE! (for owners of the game, of course)

Now um... let's discuss this game! And the new stages!

Personally I really enjoyed this game. It felt like a lost SNES gem or something. It was lacking in depth but the core mechanics were pretty sweet.

Why not sign up for a (free) account?

I'm actually excited about the new stages, and I may need to edit my review once they're added. Those should have been in from the get-go, because as it stands now, unlocking Grannie really does nothing for the replay value of the game.

I kind of wish I had picked this up when it was on sale.

See, gang? THAT is how you do post-game DLC. THAT is "extending the life of your game." No surprise that a little studio like Renegade Kid who is still working from passion gets it right while Capcom and EA need the extra cash to recoup their bloated budgets.

Sweet. I wonder how the whole shebang relates to Mutant Mudds Deluxe. Is that original?

So I played through the first 3 Granny stages, definitely worth playing if you have the game, and very challenging. I'm a bit worried though that all 20 might essentially boil down to "use your jetpack's horizontal and vertical moving powers to navigate through convoluted sections of spikes" because the first 3 had an awful lot of that. I also feel like something is "missing" by not having to collect anything in the stages. Still, I'm enjoying it. For those who already have the game and enjoyed it, it's an obvious download, and for those who don't have the game, it's just more of a reason to get it.

Funny or not so story, after I downloaded the update it took me a good 10 minutes or so to understand that you had to find the new stages within the main stages. I kept looking for somewhere on the menu / stage select system to choose them and was confused and thought my update didn't work.

@NinSage Well... all they really did is take the "bonus" stages they built for the PC version and bring them over. Which is still awesome, since other developers would probably charge for that, but it's not like they randomly decided to make a bunch of new stages for free. If there were no PC version we would probably not be seeing this free DLC.

The next four are pretty much that as well. Humph.

Woah. Weird. I'm especially surprised that it's sold more on Wii U than on Steam. Just goes to show that Nintendo fans love their exclusives (even if they're temporary).

It's really not that surprising to me. On the Wii U it was a big fish in a small pond, while on Steam it was a big fish in a big pond with a bunch of other big fish.

Any word on how it sold on iOS?
02/17/14, 15:35
@GameDadGrant Welll, it sold 50 million copies, but 49 million of those were the free version and the other 1 million were sold at an average price of 17 cents each, so it basically bombed.

Nah, just kidding, I have no idea.

Playing the Ghost levels right now, and turns out there are four secret characters to find! I recommend playing as Granny in order to not miss them, or at least not miss the first one, because they all have Granny's abilities.

I'm playing as an adorable Max-ified Jools Watsham right now.

Hehehe, so do I! I've only found one of the others, and I don't know who that's supposed to be, but he looks pretty cool.

One thing worth noting about the Ghost level update is that some of those who get it will experience a glitch causing their collectible stats to be incorrect, and making it impossible to play as Granny. In my experience it also makes some of the diamonds in the first ghost level count as collected from the start.

The fix is apparently just playing through the first ghost level in its entirety and then reverting back to the title screen. Worked for me.

Huh, I had no idea that there were secret characters to find. Guess I'll start looking for them by re-playing the stages I've already completed...

@GameDadGrant

If you don't want to have to scour every level, they're in 1-1, 2-1, 3-1 and 4-4. I found the one in 3-1 first and then looked up to see who I had missed, because I had been playing as Max until halfway through the new set of levels.

@r_hjort

Ha! I got that glitch without really realizing what was happening. Doesn't seem like a big deal, if the cure is to just complete the level.
07/05/14, 00:41
@Guillaume

Thanks, that'll save me the headache of scouring each stage. Much appreciated!

I also ran into that "glitch" where the gems in 1-1 were already collected. I didn't take note of it, I just finished the stage and went about my business. Didn't even realize it was a bug, ha ha.

Yeah, it could have been much worse of a glitch, but it looked pretty scary when it seemed like the whole save file was corrupt and incomplete.

I finally got into this game. So far i've only played the first few stages but it's pretty darn good.

I'm not late to the party, YOU'RE late to the party!

Anyway, I picked this game up (the Collection edition, on Switch) for two bucks because... because... I don't exactly know, but I did it. I'm looking forward to giving it a whirl, especially since other folks seemed to have enjoyed it a little while ago* when they played it.
