In my opinion, of course.

This game is AMAZING. So much variety. Every level has a different gameplay element. Searching for the three star coins in each stage is challenging and incredibly rewarding. The game is amazing in single player and a blast in multiplayer. World 9 is a great, epic challenge. The final Bowser battle is incredible.

Overall, this is my favorite 2D Mario game and one of my favorite games of all time. I absolutely LOVE it! I hadn't played it since it released late last year, but I've been replaying it this week and I am just amazed at how much fun and deep it is. Nintendo completely nailed it with this game.

Thirded to the fullest. It took real courage for Nintendo to make a game like NSMBW in this day and age, but I'm SO glad that they did the right thing. To me, it shows that Nintendo still 'gets it' when it comes to gameplay and level design.

It is a great game indeed!

But I always have a hard time picking out one single 'best' game in the 2-D Mario series...

Old!

And yes, it's simply amazing.

@roykoopa64

I've always had a hard time picking the best 2D Mario game as well...

...before this game. It's perfect, in my opinion. I adored it when I played it last year and replaying has solidified my true love for the title. It's a masterpiece.

There are definitely very few faults with it. I'd be more satisfied if they went with a completely new graphical style, along with completely new music. The core game, however, is superb.

I've yet to play this.. I may pick it up after my girlfriend and I beat Kirby's Epic Yarn

Yeah, I agree. It's a great game, but I wish it looked and (especially) sounded better.

It would probably be my favorite if there was a item that let you fly. I know why that item doesn't exist, but I miss that aspect from Galaxy, Mario 64, SMW, etc. But yeah, NSMB Wii is flat out awesome, which was unexpected for me as I thought the DS version was really boring. The multiplayer is delightfully chaotic.

I actually think it looks and sounds great. Sure, it could have looked and sounded better, but I personally love how it looks and I really enjoy the music.

I don't know why but the game just didn't really click with me. I mean I 100%'d the shit out of it on principal alone, but... everything just felt sterile and off. I don't know, it's hard to explain.

I'm not bashing the game, it just didn't do much for me personally.

I've really enjoyed what I played of it (the first couple worlds solo, and the first few levels with four players simultaneously), but I don't own the game so I haven't been able to play it extensively.

That's exactly how I felt about NSMB DS.

It's great, but the best 2D Mario game? I'm not sure I agree with that.

I think what stops it from Super Mario World and Yoshi's Island level of brilliance is the comparative lack of creativity. It had it's moments - the tilt based controls, the final boss and World Nine. But the shackles were still very much on the designers and artists to make a game that was acceptable to the widest range of people.

Great game, but the competition is tough indeed. I would love for Nintendo to have a 2D Mario series that is the creative equivalent of Galaxy.

@achhibbar
I think NSMB Wii has the most creative level design in the series, and that's a huge reason as to why it's so good. I don't think there were any shackles in place.

Definitely one of my favorites - which is hard to pick to begin with - but I still hold SMB3 above all Mario games.

Still, I effing LOVE NSMBW. 4P FTW.

@achhibbar

I somewhat agree, though I don't think it was a lack of creativity at all... but it was definitely made a bit "safer" than those games. I don't expect anything like Yoshi's Island to be accomplished again for a long, long time though. Like, decades from now.

Still, I loved everything about the game including the style.

@Kal-El814

They couldn't put in an item that allowed flight, due to the simultaneous multiplayer aspect of the game. The camera/action just wouldn't work with one or two players taking off into the sky, and everyone else still on the ground. The camera would either have to pan out so far that the game would be unplayable, or the camera would have to focus either on the flying players or the on-foot players. Either way, it'd ruin the experience.

In any case, I like this thread. The game isn't my favorite of the 2D games. Super Mario Bros. 3 still holds that honor. But I think it's pretty great. And a welcome follow-up to the DS title, which was fantastic in its own right, IMO.

While they can be fun, the flying powerups were somwaht broken in 2D games, you could skip large portions of some stages. If that's your thing, then more power to you, but I felt the propellor suit was fun and fair powerup that still required platforming with its use.

Kind of off-topic, but I feel like the multiplayer of NSMB DS doesn't get enough credit. The modes were independent from the main game, but they were pretty brilliant, really, and the Mario & Luigi mode probably served as the inspiration for NSMB Wii multiplayer.

Fair enough, but I would argue that the flying items opened up new areas that would otherwise be unaccessible to the player. There's something exhilarating (to me) about taking off into the sky and finding a hidden area or secret pipe that you wouldn't be able to get to without flying.

Also, I agree with Anand. The multiplayer stuff in the DS version of the game is awesome. The Mario and Luigi stuff was actually scaled down from what it was originally intended to be - simultaneous multiplayer like we saw in the Wii game. From what I understand, Miyamoto wanted simultaneous multiplayer in the DS game, but the hardware wasn't good enough for it.

Seconded...on the DS game having underrated multiplayer. That was so fun.

NSMB Wii is awesome but Super Mario World has it beat.

That said, I'd still be playing NSMB Wii today if it had some capable online multi. There are some truly creative multiplayer scenarios that can be made from NSMB Wii's cooperative/competitive setup...
