Cursed Castilla EX Discussion (Nintendo 3DS) [game]

Cursed Castilla EX on the 3DS
8.5/10 from one rating

Welcome to the official discussion thread for Cursed Castilla EX on the 3DS!

To start, please add this game to your log, add it to your collection (if applicable), and (when you are ready) rate it using the link above!

Have you guys played this game? It's a roguelike with a twist - the levels are designed by hand, and there's NO permadeath! J/K, Cursed Castilla has actually created a brand-new genre: the Makaimura-like!

Imagine Ghosts'n'Goblins (Makaimura), but fair. Sort of fair. There are still some maddening bits, but you can continue indefinitely, although your score resets every time. The enemies are varied, the retro presentation is nice, and the 3DS version makes it seem like you're playing on an arcade cabinet. In 3D. Cool!

This is an arcade game, through and through, and it actually has homages to many other games, as well, although you'd probably miss them if you weren't paying attention. Like the flaming devils that explode just like the birds in Phoenix. The attention to detail is very nice.

A few of the sections had me swearing at my 3DS, but, overall, I'm enjoying the hell out of this game. It's a super-fun throwback to simpler, but more difficult times. If you have any fondness for the Ghosts'n'Goblins franchise, you should definitely pick up Cursed Castilla.

The game does kind of teeter on that thin line between homage and ripoff, but Capcom doesn't seem interested in the franchise anymore, so whatever.

Does it have the canned jumps of, say, Super Ghouls n' Ghosts?

EDIT: I mean, can you adjust your jump trajectory mid-jump at all, or do you have to compensate by double-jumping like in the olden days.

I'll check it out.

I believe that you have a bit of air control, but the jumps generally feel ... Makaimurian when you jump while moving. And you can definitely get screwed by an enemy hitting you into a bottomless pit, a la Ghosts'n'Goblins and Castlevania.

Also, you can only double jump if you get the optional power-up (and stay alive).

I actually miss fixed length jumps. DK'94 disappointed me a bit because the jumps had so much air control and you had so many extra moves. I'm always longing for a Donkey Kong Championship Edition with the original physics. They really missed the opportunity when King of Kong was all the rage.

Beaten. It took me three hours and about twenty-seven credits. The vast majority of them concentrated on a few level sections and bosses. And I got the bad ending.

Cursed Castilla was a pretty fun ride! I do think a few sections were a bit unfair, but the infinite continues make up for it, I guess. I certainly never got this far in any G'n'G games. That said, trying to 1cc Cursed Castilla seems like a freakin' nightmare.

But I'll probably play through it again. Not any time soon, though!

Looks like a fun game. I put it on my wishlist.

I'm not a fan of canned jumps, but in this case I really can't decide if I don't want them because it feels better to me, or if I do want them because it feels more true to the old games it pays hommage to.

Does anyone know if this is coming to the Switch or not? I realize that's googleable information, but I'm lazy.

Put some time into this over the last couple of days. Man, this makes me nostalgic for the old arcades during the era I grew up in. I played this in a hotel (been traveling) and it really hit all the right chords for the game(s) this is paying homage to. I dig it. Really fun game, but more detailed impressions as I dig deeper. I will say this: I very much appreciate the infinite continues!

@r_hjort

3DS only.

Thanks for helping me indulge my laziness!

That's too bad though; it's not like I don't adore my 3DS (playing and loving Etrian Odyssey 2 Untold right now), but I'd have to do some fridge cleaning to cram this in there.

@r_hjort

What is the size of your SD card?
07/22/17, 19:35
@GameDadGrant
Not sure. It felt fairly big when I got it, but I'm sure there are bigger that could do the job, though.

Probably too late to change now. But I think Castilla is pretty small.

@GameDadGrant
It is very nostalgic. And certain sections and bosses would be a nightmare without infinite continues. But most of the regular enemies are manageable.

Stage 4 is the worst. Frustration overload!!!

Man this game can get tough as nails. This section with the turtles is MADDENING.

These mermaids are not any better off.

For me, this is easily the most-seen screen.

I didn't mind the mermaids so much. The turtles were indeed maddending. And that tower with the bubble-spewing faces. And that Super Mario Bros. castle level-esque puzzle stage.

Persevere! It's doable. With infinite continues.

I'm eager to see how your total continue count compares to mine!

It's gonna be a train wreck, ha ha. I'm racking up continues left and right!

A lot of them because of this freakin' boss.

Well, you can still beat me!

That guy was kind of a bear. Continuous lateral motion is the key!

Completed the game! ....with the bad ending. Looks like I'll have to go back around from the start and find a bunch of "tears" or something? I didn't know you had to collect stuff to get the real ending. Was there any indication or hint that I was supposed to be doing that? If so...I missed it.

Oh well. So. I died a lot. And had to continue a lot. What was my total number of continues used? Well...

I think 36 is the total, since I used one after this Game Over. This game ain't no joke, but it *is* beatable. Lots of trail and error. Just like the good ol' days!

@GameDadGrant
Yeah, I think they said that there were five tears, or something? I found three on my playthrough.

But, MORE IMPORTANTLY, you can only get the good ending if your continues are under a certain threshold. Maybe five, or something? So good luck with that!

I do kind of enjoy trial-and-error stuff these days, as long as it's not too ridiculous. It brings me back!
