Guitar Hero Live Discussion (Nintendo Wii U) [game]

Guitar Hero Live on the Wii U

Welcome to the official discussion thread for Guitar Hero Live on the Wii U!

To start, please add this game to your log, add it to your collection (if applicable), and (when you are ready) rate it using the link above!
As of right now, this is the only music game we're getting on Nintendo (between the Guitar Hero and Rock Band franchises), and after dropping last month fans from around the globe are united under the banner of playing to a live crowd. Or something. Are you playing it, or am I really the only one on the entire site?

I think the game has been out for 3 weeks now? I like that they don't have traditional DLC (as Rock Band did, which sopped up all of my money 2 bucks at a time), instead time-releasing stuff that you can gain access to with in-game currency (OR, if you prefer, REAL MONEY). I haven't spent a penny yet (of course), and I've got to play everything I've wanted to.

The Music Channel system is pretty neat (where its kinda like you're watching MTV or VH1, and just playing whatever song they feed you, and who ever else happens to be watching then), and it allows you to play a bunch of songs that you maybe wouldn't have otherwise. I do see a lot of the stuff coming up though.. I've heard Lenny Kravitz -- on there -- a good 6 times already. I SUPPOSE its possible that I happen to be playing at the same time all the time, and that block where he's most likely to appear is always going? (On the Music Channels, they have different themes, like 5-6 is Rock, 6-7 is Metal, 7-8 is New stuff, etc. There are two channels to choose from as well.)

Their "Premium Shows" are how they introduce new music to the game, requiring you to 3-star (or better) 3 "guardian?" songs (my words), and doing so will unlock you access to their show. In that show, it'll be 3 (possibly more) brand new songs that can't be found anywhere else in the game (until after the Premium Show time is over), so its kind of neat to get to them. They also give you special prizes for participating, whether is be some bonus for your score, XP, or in-game money, and in some cases (which I've been chasing!) an actual collectible thing, like a special "highway" or player card. I've gotten all 3 cards/highways so far, and thats pretty neat. The way they score you is against the CPU (which I'm convinced is actually other real people with their scores recorded), similar to how Mario Kart works. At the end of the 3 songs, whoever has the most points is your winner. I play on Regular, and a lot of the other people (real and fake) play on the next level up, so missing just one or two notes often hurts me dearly.

I played one set today (to unlock this awesome Rooster player card), and I got 100% on the 1st song (placed 1st), got 100% on the 2nd song (placed 3RD, WHAT THE F), and then got 100% on the 3rd song (placed 1st), only taking the lead on the final song with like 15 seconds to go. SCARY. So, what can you take away from this? If I missed a note on ANY of those 3 songs...yeah. I ended up winning 26-24, so it was quite close.

This is one of the Gateway songs. You know how much I like Indie music, so I've never heard of these people. A commenter on YouTube said "Guitar Hero will make them huge," and I'm sure that their placement as a Premium Show gatekeeper this week can't hurt.

(what the heck, the wrong thing copied TWICE)

New Premium Shows start tomorrow (or Wednesday, not quite sure yet); one of which will be an EXCLUSIVE concert-type footage for some nowish band (Avenged Sevenfold was there on Day 1, and Black Veil Brides is wrapping up with these ones), the other two will have some sort of score-booster, and probably a new highway. Fun!

So yeah..anyone else playing at all?

I haven't tried it yet, but I can't imagine my wife not getting it eventually, ha ha. She loves the series. I didn't know they stopped with the constant charging DLC, but that sounds like a great direction to head. I wanted to get more stuff in the old Rock Band days, but I just wasn't a fan of the piecemeal methods. I liked them as pay-once sort of things.

It is my understanding that it'll be $50 at Target on Thanksgiving or Black Friday or whatever. If I can get my mitts on it at that price, I'll definitely do it.

@J.K. Riki

I don't know if this helps explain anything else, but each time you play a song, you get:
-XP based on your level, and how well you did
-Currency, based on your level, and how well you ranked against 9 folks

And for like, 1500 currency (I think you earn about 300 a song), you can buy 15 plays or something for "I want to play THAT song" songs. If you're on the Channels, you don't pay a darn thing (they just serve it up to you), but you still earn money and XP the same way. So if you played the Channel thing for an hour straight (because you're bored), you'd've earned a pretty good pile of dough, probably gone up a level (which also allows you to enhance your guitar, ie: moving your multiplier from 4x to 5x, etc.), and set yourself up nicely for the rest of the game.

Do you have any QUESTIONS? Its definitely different than the Rock Band way of things.

@Koovaps

With the Guitar? Holy cow.

Now that's a bit enticing.

I'm kind of on the fence about this, since I'm not sure I can really relive my past glories of playing this series from yesteryear. But this is a whole new game, and if I can get it for cheap...then maybe!

The only problem is, I prefer to have my Wii U games digital, and I think this is retail-only. Which is equal parts lame and sensible (since you need the guitar peripheral to play it).

@GameDadGrant

Well, if it makes you feel any better, there is a "GHTV Cache" that they want you to download in addition to the disc. I think its like 2GB.
11/19/15, 02:31
@Mr_Mustache

I wonder what that "cache" is for? Guess I'll find out later next month...since my wife went out and nabbed the Wii U version of this game on Black Friday!

Of course, it's a Christmas gift, so I won't be checking it out at least until then.

Oh man. This is kinda crazy. I'll actually be turning my Wii U on sometime next month. For the first time this year, I think. (!) There should be some kind of celebration for this sort of thing.
11/28/15, 16:45
@GameDadGrant

Yeah, they were like $69.99! I was jealous, except for the fact that I've already had it and have been enjoying it. Glad you were able to get one!

And your Wii U celebration should be changing your icon to reflect a Wii Uuuuu. With a Wii U color scheme. It'll be TOPS.

Holy cow, popped on today to scoop up the final day of one (or two) of the Premium Shows (I think I missed one..), and I went to see the New Music section in case I did, and holy crap, they added a BUNCH of songs.

Judas Priest – Living After Midnight
Amaranthe – Drop Dead Cynical
Primus – Jerry Was a Race Car Driver
Robert Palmer – Addicted To Love
Chevelle – Face To The Floor
Rage Against the Machine – Killing In The Name
Godsmack – 1000hp
Jack White – Sixteen Saltines
Sleeping With Sirens – If You Can’t Hang
Tenacious D – Rize of the Fenix
Walk The Moon – Shut Up And Dance
Scott Weiland & The Wildabouts – Modzilla
Audioslave – Like A Stone
Five Finger Death Punch – The House of the Rising Sun
Heart – What About Love?
Huey Lewis and the News – Heart and Soul
Great White – Rock Me
The Outfield – Your Love
Cinderella – Shake Me
Lower Than Atlantis – Here We Go
Neon Trees – I Love You (But I Hate Your Friends)
Rush – Fly By Night
Sammy Hagar – I Can’t Drive 55
The Amazing Snakeheads – Here It Comes Again
Jake Bugg – Slumville Sunrise
Kings of Leon – Supersoaker
R.E.M. – Shiny Happy People
The Glitch Mob - Can’t Kill Us

I guess the total list is over 300 now. Yikes! (Addicted To Love is going to have that awesomely distracting video. I don't think I'll be able to get 100% on there with all the legs, and the sexy eyes, and licking of lips, and so on. Yeah.)

EDIT-
Here are some other songs that I've kinda dug that I ordinarily wouldn't have encountered:

(Parts of this song -- like the first 12 seconds -- sound like it could be right outta Mega Man.)

(After the crappy open; I don't know if I like it or if it just sounds REALLY familiar. Anyone else get that?)

(I think this was more fun to PLAY than to LISTEN to. Not really digging it now..)

And then, after my Premium Show stuff, I cleansed my palate with some Fly By Night, so that was cool.

Hey Grantster, did you happen to log on this week? I don't know what the challenges are this week..
12/12/15, 02:01
Guitar Hero Live is a Christmas present for my house! No one even knows we own it yet!
12/12/15, 03:33
@GameDadGrant@GameDadGrant

Oh! You have it in your "Owned" stuff!
12/13/15, 01:51
@Mr_Mustache

Okay, well. YOU know I own it! But my kids don't. It's still a surprise!

For them, that is.

But yeah, it's marked as "Owned" in the database for me, but you can also see I'm not currently playing it!

@GameDadGrant

Yeah, but as Fink pointed out earlier this week, it still says that Mario Kart 8 is our most played game. Highly doubtful..
12/13/15, 20:00
@Mr_Mustache

I'm up-to-date on my game database status!

....probably.
12/13/15, 21:21
@GameDadGrant

In case you were wondering, I now have the dirt (since I went on last night). The Premium Shows are:

-Grizfolk live at YouTube
-New for 2015
-Country something or other

I actually "won" my Grizfolk thing so I got some XP Booster for a few songs, but I got rocked on the Country one. Lemme try to remember what those super-secret songs were.. Carrie Underwood "Good Girl," a song by a guy named Ashley, and the last song was called "Creepin'." One of the gatekeeper songs I had to playthrough was one by Luke Bryan called "My Kind of Night," and I gotta say, its pretty catchy. I can't tell if its "legit" or hyperbole / parody. When you come across it in-game, you'll know.

And any video with short shorts is very distracting! Theres a lot -- no complaints!
12/14/15, 00:16
Got to play the back half of Addicted to Love today by chance. NICE.

And I'm tanking bad in the Premium Shows now. I'm up to Lv19, and apparently me playing on "Regular" gives me no shot at winning anything anymore, sigh. And the move to Advanced would remove the "fun" from the game, so that stinks. I guess I gotta practice a bit..
12/15/15, 01:44
Man, one of the Premium Shows yesterday REQUIRED you to play on Advanced in order to unlock it. I was only able to muster 3 starts (instead of the required 4), so "NOPE." I did unlock at pretty cool highway by winning a Queen set though. (Fat Bottom Girls / Hammer to Fall / I Want To Break Free. That last video is..something else. You guys have seen it, yes?)
12/24/15, 02:42
Haven't seen that video. I did play through Fountains of Wayne's "Stacey's Mom" video, though. I had almost forgotten what a knockout Rachel Hunter is.

Rod Stewart had good taste.
12/27/15, 14:51
@GameDadGrant

Yeah, how do we know her? I remember her being somewhere on TV (or in the newsish) right before that video hit the 'ol airwaves. Did you dig into any Premium Show stuff yet? I'm gonna try to knock mine out tomorrow.

Why am I typing this now and not sleeping?
