Batman: Arkham Origins Review (Nintendo Wii U) (7.8)  by

This game drops in 27 hours and change! Who is getting it?!

I'll be cracking it open in the weeee hours of Friday mernin', probably around 12:30a (MH permitting..).

Anyone have a gauge on the supposed length of this puppy? Arkham City length? (I think someone said their ILLEGALLY DOWNLOADED game had a similar size..)

As always folks, mind the spoilers.. SWEAR TO MEEEEH!

Oh you KNOW I'll be there! 360 version though because that's how I roll.

More like Arkham BORE-igins, bwah ha ha ha

I liked Asylum and really liked City (it was probably my GOTY that year) but I'm just not feeling it yet for this game. Which is all well and good, I've got other stuff to keep me busy in the near term. I'll probably get around to Originating sometime next year. Bonus: it'll be super cheap by next spring, I imagine.

Gonna need to wait on this for a bit. Also still waiting on the reviews, though I will always take them with a grain of salt.

Will probably be there on PC. A little skeptical that it'll be as good as the others but you never know

I'm interested in seeing how the Wii U/PS3/360 versions compare with each other, so I'll wait and see how impressions are. I'll probably get it for whichever one of those is considered the "best" of the three. I'll definitely get it for Wii U if all three versions are virtually identical (don't care about the lack of multiplayer on Wii U, in fact the lower price is more of a selling point!)

Yeah, confirmed that tonight w/ GameStop. I owe $53.something.

Will be picking it up. The trailer got me right in the good feels zone.

I'm playing Arkham City right now, curious to see you guys impressions of the new Batman game.

I wanted to wait for reviews to decide between the 360 and WiiU version. But I wanted to take advantage of the $10 Amazon promotion and I'll probably be too busy tomorrow to do it before it expires tomorrow. So I preordered the WiiU version. But I chose the free shipping option because I want to give myself a change at tackling those Shocktober games before the end of the month.

I'm getting it. I'm not quite as excited for it as I have been for the last 2 games, but I still expect it to be pretty good.

@anon_mastermind

Where aboots are ya?

This is on my list of games to buy when there's a price drop and I don't have anything better to spend my money on...which may take a while. I'm just not as excited for this as I thought I would be. I liked City, really liked Asylum, but...I dunno.

Reviews are starting to pour out.

VideoGamer - 8

Batman: Arkham Origins is a wonderful version of somebody else's game. While a return to the Arkham series is welcome – and if you take only one thing away from this review, it should be that Origins is a worthy entry – there's no denying that Warner Bros. Montreal has taken Rocksteady's tremendous template and crafted a similar experience.

Gamespot - 6

Batman: Arkham Origins is a deeply predictable game. It gives you exactly what you'd expect in another Arkham game, without doing anything to push the series forward. In the absence of new elements, the tried-and-true free-flow combat and predator mechanics feel routine rather than inspired. Origins is worth experiencing for the way it sets the stage for the events of the other Arkham games, but it also resides squarely in their shadows.

Eurogamer - 7/10

In truth, though, what Batman: Arkham Origins really recaptures is the solid middle of an Arkham game - the combat, the traversal, the little stealth arenas, the open-world puzzles and side missions - without really offering any highs. There's no batcave-on-Arkham moment, no shark in the museum. Perhaps the developers were too focused on not breaking all those wonderful toys, or perhaps they were bound to a tight deadline, but the game feels slightly flat as a result.

Polygon - 7/10

Batman: Arkham Origins presents a version of the popular superhero who is still learning and doesn't seem to totally understand why he does what he does. I just wish the game didn't share those vulnerabilities. Where Arkham Asylum and Arkham City surprised me with their ambition, Origins is comfortable taking the best from what has come before without contributing much of its own — or even fully understanding what worked about those systems. It's built on a solid foundation but it doesn't take the world's greatest detective to see that something significant is missing.

IGN - 7.8

Batman games are like pizza: even when they’re not very good, they’re still pretty good. Next to Arkham City, Arkham Origins is a bit of a disappointment in its lack of new ideas and use of win buttons, making it the least interesting of the trilogy. But as excuses to dive back into the excellent free-flowing combat and predator takedowns go, this story isn’t bad.

Arkham Origins left us wishing the game had followed in the example set by Troy Baker's Joker. Baker's performance follows in the footsteps of previous incarnations, but finds a fresh approach for the icon. Instead, it satisfies, but leaves us hoping for the originators to return, be they Kevin Conroy or developer Rocksteady.

All seem to be saying basically the same thing. Hopefully this is just a stop gap until Rocksteady returns to the franchise and pushes it forward again. Still going to pick it up though I won't be getting my copy until Monday.

I don't buy this bullshit.

Not falling for it anymore. I see how this predictable industry shits on sequels automatically based on principle sometimes (here it's cuz it's a new developer so let's be hardcore and act like they can't impress us).

Just like how hardcore indie hipsters thought they were fooling me when they said Bioshock 2 sucked. Or that Alien 3 sucked. Or that Zombi U sucked. Or that Other M sucked. Or that Sonic Lost World sucked. Or Suikoden sucked. Or King's Field sucked. Or Smash Bros Brawl sucked. Or Assassin's Creed 3 sucked. Or Max Payne 3 sucked. Or Dead Space 3 sucked. And on and on and on.

I don't like assholes who think they're tough critics when really they just have dead souls.

Fuck other people, they don't know shit. They can't impress me.

ps. Either SM3DW gets all 10's and 9.5's or it gets nicely peppered with 1's and 2's and a side of 7's and 8's at best. Lawl.

Just started it about an hour ago and it seems really great so far! It's a much younger, much more angry (Not gritty, so much as more aggressive) Batman with less people on his side (The cops don't like him and civilians are terrified of him) and he's a hell of a lot faster. Combat is SO much goddamn faster now, I love it. Speaking of faster, they get right into it. Game is up and you're out fighting in a coupla minutes, just I'd hoped!

Game also runs a hell of a lot smoother on my PC than either Asylum or City did and I think it looks even better. Hell of a game so far! I'm surprised! I was expecting more of the same, which, yes, it is in many ways, but it's more of the same in a more improved way. (Saw the reviews above, mostly they seem to complain that it's very similar to Batman, but don't most of those same outlets give like 8s and 9s to every Call of Duty/Madden every year? C'mon, this is only the third Batman game, they've hardly been done to death!)

That said, while I can enjoy the Batman character, this series is all about the gameplay for me, the combat is just delicious, and it's better here than ever before. No complaints thus far!

Also, if the early scenes are any indication, the combat in every scenario including the minor QTE elements (same stuff we've seen in other Batman games, easy tap-A quickly, no eyeing the screen for some random ass button) just makes everything feel so, I'll use the term again, fast! Hectic, out of control, Batman vs Croc early on is just brutal stuff, they both are clearly giving it all they have and it just makes it genuinely exciting, at least to me.

And I was in one of my "I'm-half-asleep-when-I-start-this-game-so-I-don't-expect-to-enjoy-it-too-much" states! For me, that's saying something!

I think a lot of it is due to how goddamn SMOOTH it runs. Fast fast fast! (I'm a fan of fast, in case you haven't noticed. Start it on hard, wuss!)

Hardcore indie hipsters, lol.

Whether or not the reviewers are being fair or not, I just don't really think I care enough about Batman to play a "predictable" seq... prequel. I'll probably skip this for now.

"Hardcore indie hipsters" did make me laugh, haha.

Anyway, still playing it! Still tons of fun! It's absolutely, 100% more Batman! If that sounds good to you, then it is! It's all I wanted! The formula hardly needs to be shaken up this gen, next gen though I expect a bit of change because it can be bigger and crazier! Trying to change it too much would be like AC3 where you're just shaking your head and wondering why they didn't just wait a while. (I still enjoyed it, but it struggled.)

No idea how the 9th(!) Call of Duty on the same exact console(!!!!) gets a pass from most major outlets when Batman being more Batman is somehow disappointing! It plays better than ever!

Also, finally! I get to explore Gotham City proper! Not just some walled off section like Arkham City or just one island like Asylum! Real Gotham City! This is the Batman I've wanted to play! (It always bothered me that I didn't get to explore the whole city. Also, the areas from City are in this game as well, so you can see where they are in relation to everything else!)
