So the game is out in Europe. Anyone here pick it up yet? I'm waiting for the North American release.
Like I said on a different thread, this is a kind of game that's hard to explain. It "looks" like Pikmin but plays like a 3D beat'em up. The game didn't really click with me until I tried the demo. Now I'm really looking forward to it.
Been playing the demo a lot, both in single and local multi. If a second player presses start, they can simply join in or drop-out! It's very streamlined in that way. Not only that, players don't have to pick captains: Everyone gets every power!
I found the game to actually be very different from Pikmin. Pikmin had less of an incentive to relax and explore, and a lot more pressure to find food / rescue your teammates, and once that pressure was lifted, the game's over. W101 has time-grading within missions, but allows you to do whatever between them, smashing obstacles, recruiting civilians, finding power-ups, &c.
I've played a couple of hours of the full game today. I'd avoided the demo beforehand because I figured, why spoil the surprise? Now I wish I'd spent time getting used to the battle system and the game's peculiarities before getting stuck into it.
The controls and the chaotic action are as eccentric as the game itself, it's a little frustrating at times because there isn't quite enough explanation, but I feel like there's a really great game there - it just needs you to work out exactly how to play it.
The characters are super fun, it's loud and colorful and insane, and man, it throws graphics around without breaking a sweat. :)
I pre-ordered it, so I'll get it around Day 1 regardless (whenever it shows up). Not sure about when I'll be starting it, though. I didn't get much of a chance to play more Rayman since last week, and I kinda want to finish that first. Hopefully I'll get to play a lot more of that over the weekend. And then there's GTA looming, which I planned to wait a little bit on just to get a consensus on which version is better, but I don't want to wait too long.
Nevertheless, my goal of perfectly timing the releases of Rayman, TW101 and GTAV will probably fail. Life interrupting my video game-playing schedule *sigh*. #firstworldproblems, I know.
I haven't had time to play much, but I'm already pretty happy with the game. The whole multi-attack thing (when you press X instead of A after drawing a weapon) truly made short work of the bosses I've faced in mission 000 (basically the demo level). Tons of fun so far.
If I'd waited on Pikmin, the upcoming Target B2G1 sale (Sep. 22-28) would have been perfect for getting this, Pikmin and Rayman Legends, but I was too impatient. And Wind Waker comes out just after which would have been good to get my niece who never played the original. It'll be tempting to get a game like Game & Wario or Lego City that I'm somewhat interested in, but I'm sure I can get those for cheap anyway if I'm patient, so I'll probably be waiting on this one for a while.
Had I not gotten Rayman, I would have considered canceling my TW101 pre-order to get in on that B2G1 deal with Pikmin. But I just can't come up with a third game that I really want that's also $59.99 at the moment.
@Jargon that is not a bad idea...just have to see if its a huge savings or just an excuse for me to spend$120 on games haha. I absolutely want to play all three of those. Wish this deal wasn't the exact week I move out!
@Hinph Yeah Nintendo should've just released this maybe earlier in the month. That way they fill their one release per month quota and at the same time give it some space from GTA 5. Regardless, this game unfortunately is destined to underachieve sales wise. It's a very niche game coming out on a console with a low install base.
In any case, I'm doing my part lol and my copy should be in the mail tomorrow.
