ROUND ONE: Negative World March Madness: Third Party Edition (Green Hill Zone) RESULTS

Closest matchup: I a showdown between DS games, the first entry in the Professor Layton series snuck by the final DS Castlevania game by 3 votes.

Biggest Blowout: No game was particularly dominant, but Final Fantasy VI, Mega Man 3, Resident Evil 2 and Okami all made their way to the next round with relative ease.

Biggest Upset Lufia 2 was a heavy favorite based on site rankings, but perhaps Lufia 2 simply doesn't have the exposure, as it was easily taken care of by Okami.

Lufia 2 is out? I have lost all faith in the world.

Never played. Is it on VC?

Nope which is why it lost. One of the best JRPGs on the SNES but barely anyone has played it because it has never been rereleased. I'm super hopeful for a release of it though seeing as the lesser known GB game got a VC release on 3DS.

Order of Ecclesia lost to The Curious Village, Soulcalibur II lost to Final Fantasy VI, and Okami beat out Lufia II? Not good results, Negative World.

Some good things did come out of this, though; Mega Man X and Resident Evil 2 easily moved on to the next round. I'll admit I was a bit surprised by Conker's Bad Fur Day and Mega Man 3. Mostly the latter, but I know nostalgia is strong with that one. And it's a great game that still holds up, IMO. Still, I held out hope that Rondo of Blood's expert action/platforming, secrets, unlockables, and multiple endings would prevail. Oh well.

I know, right?

So the worst (arguably) Professor Layton game advances while one of the best doesn't? Madness.

One day Lufia II will be on VC, and on that day I (and many other people *cough* VofEscaflowne *cough*) will be happy...and then we can finally do an Epic Center on the damn thing

Yeah, Lufia II really deserves more exposure. It doesn't have the best plot, but the characters are very appealing and the gameplay is quite solid.

The plot worked for the game though and I did enjoy the characters which made the fairly basic plot much more enjoyable. The gameplay is the star though.

The main issue I have with the story is that there's a whole lot of the Dragon Quest-style town-dungeon-town-dungeon progression. It's a little formulaic compared to the more dynamic pacing of some other RPGs. But the game's other merits make up for it.

I haven't played any of the Dragon Quest games (except for Monsters Joker) but I do like that progression system. Not sure why, it just works for me.

Never played a Lufia game myself, but it got my vote anyway. I tried Okami and it just didn't click for me.

Sad to see Prince of Persia get sacked in round one, I liked that game quite a bit. I guess RE2 is a pretty monumental game for a lot of people though.

Order of Ecclesia's loss is more disappointing, that might be my favorite Castlevania. And Rondo of Blood is my other favorite Castlevania, so this round hurt a good bit.

On the bright side, Sonic passed Act 1! He might squeak by Conker, but that's as far as he'll get. Oh well.

Almost all of the matches I cared about ended the way I voted. Now I have a dilemma with Mega Man 3 vs Final Fantasy 6. I think I would like Final Fantasy 6 more, but I know that I enjoy Mega Man 3 quite a bit. But at the same time I have more respect for Final Fantasy 6 because of how it advanced storytelling in games.

I almost voted for Lufia II, but I thought "Rise of the Sentinels" was something. I questioned it, nobody hopped in, so there goes one vote.

Also, when I rented it, I almost vomited, so I've got that attached to it, too. Its a good game..but Okami is pretty good, too. Tough matchup. How is Okami so "low?"

My thoughts almost exactly. Maybe your taste in games isn't as crazy as I originally thought. You strange, Dream Course-loving weirdo.

It seems like every year Mustache has a problem with what Jargon calls a SNES RPG

Soul Calibur 2 got a bad draw I think. Shame too because it is so great and I think it could have made it a lot farther.

@Mr_Mustache

I hopped in. I fixed the title in the thread and said "Fixed" in direct reply to your inquiry.

@ludist210

Whether right or wrong, I think that was based on the fact that it was the first in the series.

The only thing a little surprising is a Layton beating a Castlevania, but otherwise it's about what I expected.

Four of my selections made it. Half 'n half is usually how it goes for me with these things.
