Caution!! If you do not care about input lag and want to remain blissfully ignorant, please do not perform this test. This is simply for the very picku of us out there who want to know the ins and outs of the tech behind our games. This can also be very helpful for anyone interested in testing a new (or old) television. While there are many resources online that can give you an idea of your TV's input lag, this is a quick and dirty way of verifying those results for yourself... (more)

The recent release of Super Metroid on the Wii U Virtual Console is a great reminder of how incredible the music for the Metroid games has been across the entire series. As many of you know, I am passionate about my gaming music and listen to it even when I'm not playing a game, and I admit I've even purchased a couple of official soundtracks here and there over the years. This list is completely my personal selection of favorite Metroid music tracks... (more)

Although ACen describes itself as an “anime, manga and Japanese popular culture convention”, there is also a very large focus on video games, to such an enormous extent that I’m a bit surprised that they haven’t worked “video games” into more of the descriptions of the convention. I have already mentioned the gaming room and gaming swag in my impressions feature, and you have probably seen my top 10 Nintendo-related cosplayers photo feature by this point. For my final feature I am going to talk a bit about some of the video gaming panels that I attended at the convention... (more)

One of the benefits of being invited to ACen 2013 as press is that I got the chance to participate in press-exclusive interview sessions with two of the key guests of ACen 2013. The title to this feature may be slightly misleading, because both of the voice artists in question have done their work primarily in animation as opposed to video games, but as each of them also have a substantial amount of video game voice acting roles on their respective resumes as well, and considering the nature of Negative World, I decided to tailor this feature more to those roles... ACen 2013 was only my second time capturing cosplay in photo form (C2E2 2013 being my first) and I feel the same now as I did then; it is essentially a meta game of the convention. Think of it as being a bit like Pokémon Snap. You have to stay constantly alert because you never know where and when these strange creatures (I say this lovingly!) will appear, and when you see one pop out, you need to act fast or you may lose your chance... I have just returned from my second and last day at Anime Central (ACen) 2013, “the Midwest’s largest anime, manga and Japanese popular culture convention”, which takes place at the Hyatt Regency O’Hare hotel and the Donald E. Stephens Convention Center in Rosemont, IL, a suburb northwest of my beloved Chicago. ACen is an annual convention that debuted in 1998, has taken place every year since then, and is a very big deal in Chicagoland, with thousands attending each year, and many of its fans being repeat attenders. However, this is the first time that I have made my way to the convention, so the experience was brand new to me. The convention ran from Friday through Sunday, May 17-19, and I attended on both the 18th and the 19th. I’m going to do a couple of features on some of the more specific things that I have to talk about, so this is just going to be my general impressions and a walkthrough of my time at the convention. Think of it as my journal of the show... (more)

With the recent release of Castlevania: Lords of Shadow - Mirror of Fate for 3DS earlier this year, I figure now is a good time as any to see where the entire Castlevania series stands according to the ratings given by the Negative World community! Over the years, Konami has created true classics spanning many of Nintendo's systems, but which Castlevania games are considered the best? Of course, since our game database only includes games on Nintendo systems (this is a Nintendo site after all), this list will not include Castlevania games from other platforms... (more)

I boarded The Starship Damrey with all the knowledge of the game the creators wished for me to have. This game does not hold your hand, and it is expected of you to explore and discover on your own. With persistence and a smidge of patience, you will solve the mystery aboard the Starhip Damrey; the problem lies not in the story, but rather how abruptly you will have unraveled this mystery... Mario and Donkey Kong: Minis on the Move (Nintendo Software Technology) is a game with some serious lineage. It all began with a tight little platformer named Donkey Kong that released in the arcades way back in 1981, when I was just a wee young lad. Years later (1994, to be precise), Nintendo would release a Game Boy game named, once again, Donkey Kong (generally referred to as Donkey Kong ‘94 to avoid confusion), which took the basic premise of the original Donkey Kong and expanded it with over 100 stages of platforming brilliance, throwing in some puzzle elements for good measure. 2004’s Mario vs. Donkey Kong for the Game Boy Advance was a pseudo-sequel to this game, and it introduced the “Minis”, small mechanical Mario toys that, in certain stages, Mario would have to lead to the exit. In 2006 Nintendo changed up the formula completely with Mario vs. Donkey Kong 2: March of the Minis, focusing solely on the Minis themselves with some Lemmings-esque puzzle platforming gameplay. A few sequels using this new Mini-focused gameplay formula followed in 2009 and 2010 on DSiWare and the DS respectively, and that brings us up to date. It’s 2013, and apparently Nintendo Software Technology felt that yet another formula shift was necessary. Mario and Donkey Kong: Minis on the Move is indeed a shift, and the result is what happens when you take the previous Minis-focused 2D games and use them as inspiration for a full 3D game, creating a brand new experience in the process...
