Is anyone else pissed at how Microsoft is pushing Natal onto the media at the moment? (The Today Show, Jimmy Fallon). If it wasn't already obvious that this is purely a manufactured pretense to slow down the Wii, it should be now... (more)

Yes, I consider E3 a holiday. It may actually be the best holiday, though in recent years it has been floundering a bit. However, E3 may just be "back." Though I hesitate to say it is back in full (where were the booth babes?!) this has certainly been the best E3 since the shift to the new format. And yes, much like holidays such as Easter and Christmas, I consider E3 to have a season surrounding it. So, for the sake of my top 10 list, I'm not sticking solely to games announced at E3; I am including a few that were announced in the weeks leading up to E3 as well. Just because you get your Christmas present a week or two early doesn't mean it isn't a Christmas present! Here goes... (more)

Frankly it is kind of sad that Capcom worked their ass off to get around licensing issues and get this game to the fans clamoring for it despite the fact that it is almost doomed to bomb but... Nintendo still won't bring over Fatal Frame 4 and Disaster... (more)

Figured I'd link to this and get everyone's thoughts here as well. I have to admit I blew a slight fuse at the news (unintentional rhyme, folks), as you can tell from my replies in the thread... (more)

I hate the term “hardcore gamer.” I really do. It's already tough enough to define it as it stands, but it is a constantly evolving term. Yet it continues to pervade industry marketing chatter as if it is some firm and easily definable term, and it has become the most used term of note in respect to 3rd party sales on the Wii. Publishers can accept that 3rd party casual games can and do sell on the Wii, as games like Carnival Games the the Rayman Raving Rabbids series have shown. Publishers can also accept that hardcore 1st party games can sell, though they accept this a bit more hesitantly. But what about the 3rd party hardcore? Is there even a hardcore market on the Wii worth 3rd party time and effort, or are the Nintendo hardcore titles that sell an anomaly based on a very dedicated core Nintendo fanbase who is unwilling to look outside Nintendo to satisfy their hardcore needs? Who exactly is buying the Wii and how willing are these Wii owners to try out hardcore games from 3rd parties? These are the questions many publishers are asking themselves, and with the ever-growing Wii userbase these are questions they cannot ignore, yet they mostly seem content to sit back and hope that others take the first step in determining the answers to these questions. Personally, I wonder if they are asking questions a bit prematurely before dealing with the most important one that all of the rest stem from, which is; “What, exactly, do we mean by a hardcore gamer or a hardcore game?” How do you base your publishing decisions off of a term you haven't fully defined? But alas, I digress. For now we will assume that publishers know what they mean, though I will deal with that a bit further down... (more)

As a lad of Indian descent, Tennis was expected of me. Tennis and Mathematics. Tennis, Mathematics, and an eventual career in Medicine or Engineering. Ping Pong was a mandatory elective, soccer was optional, and basketball was entirely out of the question. Given that, I played tennis, but I never really knew if I enjoyed it. It took the loss of opponents, youth, and flexibility to make me realize that, yes, I actually did like playing tennis. But that realization came far too late, and my annual tennis match does little to quench my thirst for the sport of nerds... (more)

During an interview conducted during an EA Community Event on Thursday, March 12, Peter Moore was surprisingly candid and forthcoming about EA's approach to sports games on the Wii. He admitted that the company was still feeling out how to create successful sports titles on the system that has taken the world by storm. Apparently, the plan is to keep trying different approaches until a franchise/sport gains traction, after which they will refine and iterate on that concept, the most successful example to this point being Tiger Woods Golf, which was not only EA's biggest sports title on the Wii in '08, but their biggest '08 Wii title, period. Further Tiger Woods games on the Wii will improve upon this winning formula. The upcoming Tiger Woods Golf 10 looks to be the definitive entry in the series thus far, featuring over 20 courses, improved motion control shot mechanics, robust simultaneous online play, and brand new (top-secret!) game modes that are sure to extend the already healthy life of the product. Virtual duffers should have a lot to look forward to... (more)
