I love the music of the Mother series. It's quirky, weird, funky and emotional all at once, and there's really little else like it... (more)

Donkey Kong 64 is a pretty divisive game, with the most common complaint among critics being “too much collecting!” While the game overdoes it with the collectables, its issues run deeper than that. Collecting “stuff” at its core isn’t a horrible gameplay concept, and—sometimes!—it’s fun to do in DK64. However, there’re several other issues that exacerbate this concept’s problem, and I’ll dive into ‘em now. For the sake of interest, only one of these complaints will be directly collectible-related... (more)

It's not exactly a secret that, outside of Nintendo published titles, the "AAA" retail scene on the Wii U is basically dead. There are still a few 3rd party titles coming, and hopefully we will get a few gems, but the reality is pretty grim. That's not to say you can't get a lot of great 3rd party titles on the Wii U, because you sure can! You just need to check out the eShop, which has been getting a surprisingly solid amount of great titles, generally from indie developers, during the period retail has floundered. There are many great 3rd party Wii U eShop games to choose from, and here are my top ten... (more)

It's Kirby! Nintendo's puffy powerhouse has been through all sorts of adventures, yet I feel he doesn't quite get the props he deserves. This Top Ten will be devoted to detailing why the Kirby series is one of Nintendo's finest, and what the little guy has contributed to gaming throughout the years... (more)

This is a list that I've been working on ever since December rolled around last year. It was yet another great year for Nintendo gaming, with lots of great stuff available from both Nintendo's own first-party studios, and several third-party publishers as well. It was actually rather difficult trying to whittle down a list of "just" ten great games that I've played over the last twelve months. But I think I've finally got it down to my favorites of last year, and I'll list 'em all below for your viewing enjoyment... (more)

Well, another year is in the books. 2014 was widely expected to be a bit of a "down year", with all of the heavy-hitters that dropped last year and those expected to release in 2015. And up until the season changed to Autumn, it looked like 2014 was going to be an extraordinarily weak year for gaming. But having said that, the Fall and Winter games that I was looking forward to came out and lived up to my high expectations, and in addition to those, several games came out of left field to really surprise me (in a good way!). Looking over it, I'm very pleased with my final list, which I've narrowed down to 10 games. I thoroughly enjoyed each one of these titles, so much so that it's very tough for me to look back on 2014 as any sort of disappointment. It's a really strong lineup... (more)

I like to consider myself an above average gamer. Sure, I don’t really have any proof that this is the case, but I tend to hold my own when playing against random people in games like Mario Kart online and uh… Smash Bro... ok, mostly just Mario Kart. But hey I have finished a few tough games in my times. I finished Metroid Prime on hard mode, that was tough, right? I’ve also finished all of the NES Mega Man games, even the first one, which many people think is impossible for some reason. I’m ok at video gaming... (more)

I'm finally playing through Donkey Kong Country: Tropical Freeze on the Wii U a good 10 months or so after it released. It's a great game, maybe even better than Returns, and if you are into that kind of thing you should definitely play it. One of the coolest things about Tropical Freeze is that it marks the return of legendary composer David Wise to the Donkey Kong Country series. David Wise composed the original soundtracks (OSTs) for the first two games in the SNES trilogy and parts of the third (although not Donkey Kong Country Returns on the Wii, which was handled by Metroid Prime composer Kenji Yamamoto, among others.) So I felt like it was time to give David Wise some much deserved love. And maybe some love for Yamamoto and his team as well. But mostly for David Wise, because that dude's Donkey Kong Country tracks are the best... (more)
