While news that DS games were coming to the Wii U are not new, it has recently been reconfirmed that they will indeed reach Nintendo's latest console. In honor of this recent announcement, I have compiled a list of the DS games that I would like to see the most on the Wii U Virtual Console. And yes, Iím lumping series into 1 slot... (more)

(DISCLAIMER: If it reads like I was slobbering over some of the games on this list, it's likely because I was. ) (more)

It's that time of year again, when I take a moment and look back at all the games I've played over the last 12 months. Below are my Top 10 favorite games from this past year... (more)

Oh yes friends, it is time for our top 10 Mega Man games! Iíve recently posted top 10 game lists for Mario and Metroid, which added to the Zelda, Kirby and Castlevania lists that we already had, all of which you can see here. With Mega Man primed to make his Smash Brothers debut in the near future we hope, it felt like the right time to talk about his best games. And the way Capcom has been handling Mega Man lately, this may very well end up being a list of the best Mega Man games that stands up to the test of time. Please make it not so Capcom... (more)

With a new Mario game arriving soon (Super Mario 3D World for Wii U), I couldn't help but think back on all of Mario's different special moves and abilities. More specifically, Mario has many different ways to soar through the sky and stay there for a period of time before touching foot on solid ground. I decided to pick out some of my favorite methods Mario has used to conquer the air; I broadened the definition of 'flight moves' to allow for more then just the standard power-ups, though I did intend to stay within the regular Mario platformer series. Let's take a look at what ended up on my list: (more)

Metroid is one of the absolute best franchises in video gaming, producing some of the greatest video games ever made, and if you disagree with that obviously true statement you are no friend of mine. However, it isnít exactly as prolific of a Nintendo franchise as Mario or Zelda, and in fact, disregarding re-releases, a trilogy compilation, and a pinball game (yep, there was a Metroid pinball game), there are only ten Metroid titles released to date. Coincidentally, there are only ten spots in a top ten list. I think that we can all agree that this is godís way of telling me that I had no choice but to put together this list. Or the aliens telling me. Either way works... (more)

I recently had the joy of playing through the classic Super Nintendo RPG Earthbound for the first time ever due to its long overdue re-release on the Wii U Virtual Console this past July. Yes, I am a bad Nintendo fan for having never played it before, and I should be ashamed of myself. However, that mistake has now been rectified, so I can only beg forgiveness and carry on... (more)

If there is one character that is synonymous with the company Nintendo, it has to be Mario. Mario made his debut way back in the 1981 arcade game Donkey Kong (although he was called Jumpman at that point), and the success of the game propelled him into the spotlight. However, it was really 1985ís Super Mario Bros. that cemented his role as Nintendoís flagship mascot, a position that he has held without serious challenge ever since. With Marioís next big platformer (Super Mario 3D World for the Wii U) just around the corner, I felt like it might be a good time to stop and take a look back at the games that have led us to where we are... For better or for worse, we live in an industry ruled by sequels, where taking risks on brand new IPs is becoming rare, replaced more and more often by regular iterations of established franchises. At least, this is the case on the ďAAAĒ level, and Nintendo is certainly not excluded from this observation. However, Iím not going to get on a soapbox and rant about sequelitis; Iíll save that for another day. And the simple fact is, at the end of the day, developers wouldnít make sequels if consumers werenít buying them. When you truly love a game, it is hard to not want more... (more)

Music in games seems often overlooked, and one kind of theme typically ignored in the background is a game's menu music. These tunes are what we hear when we set up the game, and they vary from laidback to lively as they set the mood for the type of game ahead. Shining a spotlight on these commonly underappreciated compositions, listed here are my favourite themes for when I'm making choices... (more)

And weíre back, this time with my top 10 NES original soundtracks! Yeah yeah I know, Iím doing things out of order here, sue me. Awhile back I posted my Top 10 SNES Original Soundtracks (OSTs), because the SNES is the best thing ever and its music was doubly so, but I felt like the good olí classic 8-bit Nintendo Entertainment System deserved its day to shine as well. So here we are... (more)

So the Ice Climbers did pretty well in the Melee tournament at Evo 2013 last month. They made it all the way to the Grand Final match! And as I watched the daring duo rampage through a collection of fan-favorite franchise characters, a thought occurred: how does a pair of such fearsome cold-blooded killers go nearly thirty years after their debut without another game?..
