The Nintendo 3DS has come a long way since its release in 2011. Not only did this hardy handheld weather a rough launch, it became a bustling hub for great games – eShop oddities, remarkable remakes, superb sequels, and fresh faces. One such fresh face was Dillon from Dillon’s Rolling Western. The aforementioned eShop exclusive released in 2012 found success, paving the way for two sequels that are bigger and better than the original. The latest game, Dillon’s Dead Heat Breakers, is one of this year’s biggest new releases for the 3DS, but it has come at a time when a great deal of attention has shifted to the Nintendo Switch. I’m enjoying the Switch quite a bit myself, but I’ll dock it and grab my 3DS when it gets a great new release, and Dillon’s Dead Heat Breakers is just that. It improves upon its predecessors in practically every way, showing not just how much the series has grown over the years, but how much the 3DS has grown in that time as well... (more)

I’m going to go out on a limb here and assume that most of the people reading this review fall into one of two groups: those who specifically searched for a Gotta Protectors review (there are only a handful of reviews out there), and those who have never even heard of Gotta Protectors.  Admittedly, I was in the latter camp for a long time after Gotta Protectors released, but boy am I glad that I discovered this overlooked mid-2016 eShop game and gave it a shot.  It’s the very definition of a “hidden gem”... Note: I plan to keep this review spoiler-free for the most part, but I will be talking about some of the areas, tasks and powers from various stages in the game, and I can’t promise that we have the same definition of what consists of a spoiler... (more)

Darkwing Duck (along with Tale Spin) are the two series represented in the Disney Afternoon collection that have gone largely neglected by the house of mouse. As someone who was born after the peak of Disney’s afternoon cartoons of the 80’s and early 90’s, I still encountered the likes of Scrooge McDuck and Chip and Dale in other Disney projects. But I’ve only been exposed to Darkwing Duck through secondhand information and the NES title. It seems to have been forgotten by the likes of Disney and the broader popular culture. So I’m going into the property with an even cleaner slate than the likes of Scrooge or the pair of chipmunks. I am going in almost blind, armed only with the knowledge that this game is similar to Mega Man... (more)

Two weeks ago I published a scathing review of the atrocious baby game DuckTales. Today, we will look at DuckTales 2; the best game ever made. Our Disney Afternoon Collection tour makes its second stop!.. (more)

In the first of a series of reviews covering titles featured in the Disney Afternoon Collection, we'll be looking at Duck Tales. I'm not yet sure how many of the games on the collection that I will cover, as I may not have enough to say about some to justify writing a full review. I guess it'll just be a nice surprise. Without further ado, here is Duck Tales... (more)

It's always a little tricky to review launch-window games. Are they genuinely good, or is it just us as gamers wanting them to be good for our new systems that makes us think they're better than they actually are? The Nintendo Switch didn't have a large library of games available at launch, but the few that were available were quality, for sure... (more)

Hey! Did you know that there are games on the Switch that are not The Legend of Zelda: Breath of the Wild? And that some of them are even pretty good? Interesting! Today I’m going to tell you about a Switch game that is definitely not the Legend of Zelda: Breath of the Wild, but is still worth checking out. Its name is Kamiko. Are you ready?.. (more)

Pokémon Sun and Moon feel like the type of Pokémon games that I should adore. They change up many mechanics that have existed for years, streamline many things, and to polish up the game and fix many of its long standing issues. Now this isn’t to say that I don’t like the game because I actually enjoy it a lot. But I do think it falls short in its quest to ‘fix’ the series... (more)

Ask any Dragon Quest fan--one of the most appealing aspects of the series is its consistency. Elements like the setting, general town-to-town story progression, the art and the music are all major aspects of the series that have become familiar throughout its lifetime. Of course, with that comes the challenge of making every game different enough to not fall too deeply into the formula; adding that perfect gameplay wrinkle that keeps things interesting without deviating from what made the series great in the first place. Heck, ask anyone who's been burnt by later Final Fantasy games; too much change can contribute to a series losing its identity... (more)
