This isn't exactly a shockingly novel idea, but it's nice to see someone from Nintendo openly stating it in a recent Wired.Com interview... (more)

When Nintendo announced the eShop for the 3DS, it announced a couple of things. First, it announced that it would include the DSi Ware Store. Second, that it would feature a new portable Virtual Console. But, more interestingly, that it would feature newly remade NES and SNES games that would take advantage of the features of the 3DS. Nintendo dubbed these games, 3D Classics. The first titles, Excitebike, Xevious, and Urban Champion, have already come out and demonstrate some of the upgrades that can be done to these old games. The following are the 3D Classics I’m most interested in seeing for the SNES. In addition, I will also discuss how the title can take advantage of the features of the 3DS. As a default, I would like every title to feature Widescreen 3D, no HUD (Heads Up Display) on the top screen (unless specified), and a customizable control scheme, and optional C-Pad controls. Also, most of the extra bells and whistles, such as level selects and extra functionality should be given to the player after they beat the games as a reward for their hard work... (more)

Much like every other entertainment medium in the planet, every video game save for a few exceptions I could probably count with my two hands, has a consensus attached to it - everyone either loves it, hates it, or something in between. That's because gamers usually expect something specific out of video games, and products either deliver or they don't. However, at the end of the day, we're all different, and sooner or later we're all bound to not follow the general consensus at some point, and video games are no exception... (more)

The Legend of Zelda (NES), the first game in the Zelda franchise, was a breath of fresh air for the videogame industry. It was played from a top down perspective and provided the player with a long quest (or two) and lots of explorations and secrets. The second game, Zelda II: The Adventure of Link (NES), was played mostly from a 2D side scrolling perspective. Though, it’s a great game on it’s own, it is considered by many to be the black sheep of the family when compared to the rest of the franchise. When The Legend of Zelda: A Link to the Past (SNES) was released in 1991, it was regarded as a return to form for the franchise and is considered by many to be be one of the best games ever made... Caution!! If you do not care about input lag and want to remain blissfully ignorant, please do not perform this test. This is simply for the very picku of us out there who want to know the ins and outs of the tech behind our games. This can also be very helpful for anyone interested in testing a new (or old) television. While there are many resources online that can give you an idea of your TV's input lag, this is a quick and dirty way of verifying those results for yourself... (more)

The Virtual Console for the 3DS will feature games from the Game Boy, Game Boy Color, Game Gear, and TurboGrafx-16. For the next couple of weeks I will be releasing my Top Ten Most Wanted games for these systems and others that may potentially make the 3DS Virtual Console. Whenever a game is part of a series, I will just put the series name and the game I’m most interested in seeing. This week, I will focus on the Game Boy Advance... (more)

After a full 100 hours, I’d finally conqured Octopath Traveler to 100% completion the other day. While I could talk at length about the game for hours, this Top Ten is focusing entirely on what I feel is its strongest asset: the music. As a game composer, I have a particular appreciation for video game OSTs, and Octopath Traveler’s is absolutely among the best I’ve ever heard! Relative newcomer composer Yasunori Nishiki saw it fitting to craft a massive, melody-driven soundtrack for this game, and have the entirety of the game’s songs performed by live musicians. I cannot overstate how much this level of care added to the game, particularly when the music actively elevates other aspects of Octopath (such as its writing and storytelling). It was quite a task to narrow down the choices to a mere ten, but here they are!.. (more)
