Anyone playing this? I'm curious how it compares to the Wii version, and I'd enjoy reading first-time-player impressions.

I just finished downloading it (pretty large file at 17,665 blocks). It looks a lot better on the 3DS screen than the videos made it out to be, I'm REALLY liking the 3D effect this game has. I've already played the Wii version, but the biggest benefit is the lack of waggle to roll. Only played a couple of levels so I can't comment on much else.

Playing Normal Mode, too.

I'm waiting until my next paycheck until I get this. I recently downloaded Super Mario 3D Land on my son's 3DS, and paid off some bills - I'll snag this when I have a bit more $$$ in my "WAM" budget. So I'll have to wait two weeks for that.

Unless I happen to win big at Keno or something while at the bar. Then I'll use that cash to buy me some video games, huzzah!

I'm curious about it but if I do get it, it won't be for a while. I did enjoy the Wii version a lot but double dipping for a few extra levels and no waggle isn't worth it to me right now. I have other stuff to play and with Animal Crossing: New Leaf, Project X Zone and Shin Megami Tensei IV hitting in the next couple of months, I'd be stupid to get this.

Yeah, I feel the same way. And I'm sure there are other worthy 2D platformers coming soon on the platform, anyway. Stuff we don't know about yet on the eShop, or that Umihara somethingsomething game, or whatever.

Same boat for me. I love the Wii version but there's not enough reason in my eyes to double-dip on this one when there're plenty of games in my backlog already. I'm curious how the new set of levels is though.

My kids are loving the Wii version currently. No rush to get this at all.

I never played the Wii version so I am super psyched for this.

I have a big problem with this game: everything is too teensy-tiny, it's actually kind of hard to see what's going on, and forget about reveling in all the glorious details of the artwork, the low resolution screens makes many objects look vague and blocky. This is what happens when games are developed for the big screen and then "shrink-rayed" down to a portable. The difference between something like this and Luigi's Mansion is night and day, it makes me realize that one of the genius things about LM that makes it so gorgeous and playable is that Luigi is relatively very large on the screen.

Sounds like the game is what I thought it'd be, just a portable version of the game. Which is probably a good thing in my case, I don't want to buy a game I already have. Though I may still end up doing so if I come across it cheap sometime, to play the new world.

Despite my previous complaints of everything being too teensy on the 3DS screen I'm really enjoying this game, it's super fun, and perfect for a 5-10 minute play session on the train or while I'm at my computer waiting for huge files to save or load or copy etc.

On the 3rd world, excited to see what comes next! The big set pieces are fantastic.

Well. Yeah.

What did you think it was gonna be?

Hoy cow! Why didn't anyone tell me this game turned into Survival Horror at World 5-8? Being eaten alive by a million tiny spiders? Scared me to death, I barely made it out! (poor Diddy he didn't make it)

@GameDadGrant The second possibility I thought of was that it could be a poor port, with bad control or it runs poorly or something like that. And there was a small chance that it could have been more of a remake, with changed around levels and more new features and stuff like that.

Downloading now. 3DS is a monster.

I think it's a good port, it runs really smoothly, and the controls are great (probably better, sans waggle). The only downside to this version is the size/resolution of the 3DS screen, it's painfully obvious this game was designed to run in 480P on a large HDTV, sometimes DK is so small on the screen he's literally like 3 or 4 pixels high, if they were designing this game from scratch for the handheld there is no way they'd make the same decisions in terms of scale.

That's my one big gripe though, other than that it's really amazing, and it's a lot of fun. The size of the levels are perfect for short-burst play, this has become my go-to 3DS game for commutes, before bed, and stuff like doing laundry (was just playing at the laundromat today).

@Mop it up

Changed levels and more features would have been more welcome, IMO. But I guess that would have been less of a port of the console game and more of a... Donkey Kong Land Returns 3D, if you will.

@deathly_hallows

I think maybe the same "drawbacks" came with Rayman Origins on 3DS. Rayman looks decent enough throughout most of the game, but when the "tiny" Power Up becomes available, I'll admit it is sometimes difficult to see him.

So does the 3DS have more levels than the Wii version? Because this game is really long! I'm at the Cliffs section, it feels much meatier than your typical sidescroller.

@GameDadGrant
Def, Rayman was the same way. Console ports don't always fit that well. I still want Epic Yarn on the 3DS though!
06/24/13, 05:20
@deathly_hallows It has a new bonus world at the end of it, which I believe has 8 new levels.

@GameDadGrant
I think that Donkey Kong Land Returns would have been a much better title for the 3DS than a Wii Port.

@Pokefreak911

Agreed. I'd love that. I'd buy it SO HARD.
