Animal Crossing: New Leaf Review (Nintendo 3DS) (9.7)  by

Animal Crossing... I still remember getting up early before heading to my high school classes just to see what Tom Nook was selling that day. This game series has always held such a dear place in my heart. I think it has to do with the fact that heading to the land of Plaisant, Tranquil, or other towns of mine always being a great escape for me. Making Bells, filling my catalog, and fishing in the ocean were always points of peace for me. While I've been very public about my discontent with AC: City Folk, I have a new-found hope once more for New Leaf. From all the information that has been dished out due to the game's release already in Japan, and Nintendo pushing more information through Nintendo Directs, I am confident this game will be a fresh take on a classic and comforting idea.

The game released in North America on June 9th, 2013 and released in other territories shortly after.

Please use this thread for all discussion on the game. If you would like to make trades or visit towns, please use the specific Animal Crossing New Leaf Trading Thread for further assistance. It makes more sense to keep this focused on the gameplay and game discussion while leaving bartering out of it. There are no Friend Codes this time around for Animal Crossing, which is a blessing! Many of us have already befriended ourselves via the 3DS Friend Codes Thread thread. That thread will be where we continue to befriend each other and trade 3DS IDs for the sake of visiting each other's towns.

Many many years ago I discovered a wonderful Animal Crossing website which has a great catalog feature set up. Now, the new game will mean it'll take time for the site to get a full correct catalog up and running but I expect it to work beautifully once more to allow anyone to track their catalog there. You can find this website at the Animal Crossing Community page. They also have forums there which are very active right now in anticipation of this game. Granted, the general age of the members of that site fall a bit lower than here, but I've found over all the years I've been there that the discussion is still mostly pleasant and easy.

Lastly, I want you all to enjoy the music from this new game or any of the games, whenever you want. The following site will allow you to hear the "Xam" or "Xpm" music that would naturally occur in your life right now as if you were in the game. You can select from any of the Animal Crossing games and the music will continually loop until the hour changes. It's pretty cool. You can find that page here. It's by default at the City Folk music.

So again, everyone enjoy this game! Enjoy this discussion! If you're interested in being negative about the title, just find your way to a different thread for that because this thread is about the experience and meant to bring the community together during the launch of one of the most community driven games Nintendo offers.

Say hello to Kapp'n, cause we're about to make it into town on June 9th.

(One more quick note; Keep an eye out for the game's review, which I will write sometime in the end of June probably.)

So, Amanda and I plan on sharing the game.

Do we have to share the same town, or can we each create our own town? I believe we can both have our own character at least, but I wanted to make sure that we weren't restricted to sharing the same town.

@PogueSquadron I believe you will share the same town, but only the 1st person to play will become Mayor.

@PogueSquadron

Sharing the same town might be a little cumbersome and will require some planning like (who needs what from Nook that day) and such, but in the end, it'll be fun. You'll have the same layout but it'll become "your" town as a collective, which might be cute for a couple.

To be precise, the download copy is 6,002 blocks. Plus whatever extra data is created for saving.

For conversion purposes, this is somewhere around 750MB.

Eye yi yi! Someone was kind enough to compile and post a guide to the eyes...

In the past, I've just let happen what may happen, but after getting stuck with bug eyes... I'll be using this guide come Sunday!

I'll keep it close when I start the game up, but I'll want to know the questions first. I'll answer honestly and get what I get, unless it's truly horrible.

So long as I don't get the half-closed stoner eyes, I'll be fine.

I'm on the way to Nintendo World Store with my wife & son. Not to get the game just check out the AC digs hopefully before they break it down.

Digital releases at midnight right? That's when I'm getting it! Only being 750MB shouldn't take that long to get into the game.

@missypissy

Should be. I could play it but it would probably be around 2am... and I'd rather not jump into the game in the middle of the night and barely have anything to do.

Take photos!

If I don't think of something better soon, I may end up calling my town Pancakes.

I wish we had enough money to get two copies. It's going to be weird having to share the same town. Amanda was not happy about that haha. She wants her own town.
06/08/13, 19:54
@PogueSquadron

Can you or her ask someone if you can work for them to earn 35 bucks? Like, hey grandma.. can I give you your spongebaths for the next week for 35 bucks? Then explain the significance of multiplayer and sharing two copies.

But if you only have one copy, let her be mayor! It's the gentlemanly thing to do.

@VickiL

That's a delicious idea.

I still need to decide if I want to get sucked into the world of Animal Crossing again. It's pretty tempting, but it's such a huge time sink.
06/08/13, 21:05
I keep going back and forth on whether or not to get this game. It looks really charming, but I'm not sure it's for me. Everything I read about it online talks about how it's the most relaxing game in the world, and playing it for half an hour every day is a great way to escape. That's not what I want from games though; I want to engage, not escape!

The aspect of the game that intrigues me the most is the online stuff. Can I send letters and items to you guys from my mailbox? I think the sense of community that this game could bring would be the best part for me. I wouldn't mind popping in every day and writing Fink a letter.
06/08/13, 21:12
@Secret_Tunnel

I'd love daily letters Secret_Tunnel!

I think you can send letters to friends that way even if they aren't in your town. I remember doing something like this with City Folk and they have definitely not taken out features from the series. I think this is supposed to be hands down the best online experience the series has ever seen. That's what everyone says anyway.

And as for being engaged, I don't know where everyone plays for only a half hour. For the first few months, I constantly put in more than that. Sure it takes time for things to regenerate at your stores, and yeah some things are only once a day like what Turnip prices are (well technically twice a day) but you still can harvest fruit, fish, hunt bugs, design clothing, visit dream towns, do island minigames, etc etc. Each minigame takes like five minutes anyway so just a handful of those is a half hour. I have no doubts I'll be very engaged into this game and that's why I'm fine with the retail copy.

People keep saying I should be worried about my copy because I'll be swapping carts like crazy but....

Oh hell I wont. I know this game will be in there constantly for a long time. And when a new fun 3DS game arrives, well it's not like I'll be swapping every 10-30 minutes. It'd be what, once a day? Twice? Just depends on my own habits. And it wont be an issue. I know it's a convenience, but I don't find it to be the greatest hassle in the world or anything.
