Animal Crossing: New Leaf Review (Nintendo 3DS) (9.7)  by

Animal Crossing... I still remember getting up early before heading to my high school classes just to see what Tom Nook was selling that day. This game series has always held such a dear place in my heart. I think it has to do with the fact that heading to the land of Plaisant, Tranquil, or other towns of mine always being a great escape for me. Making Bells, filling my catalog, and fishing in the ocean were always points of peace for me. While I've been very public about my discontent with AC: City Folk, I have a new-found hope once more for New Leaf. From all the information that has been dished out due to the game's release already in Japan, and Nintendo pushing more information through Nintendo Directs, I am confident this game will be a fresh take on a classic and comforting idea.

The game released in North America on June 9th, 2013 and released in other territories shortly after.

Please use this thread for all discussion on the game. If you would like to make trades or visit towns, please use the specific Animal Crossing New Leaf Trading Thread for further assistance. It makes more sense to keep this focused on the gameplay and game discussion while leaving bartering out of it. There are no Friend Codes this time around for Animal Crossing, which is a blessing! Many of us have already befriended ourselves via the 3DS Friend Codes Thread thread. That thread will be where we continue to befriend each other and trade 3DS IDs for the sake of visiting each other's towns.

Many many years ago I discovered a wonderful Animal Crossing website which has a great catalog feature set up. Now, the new game will mean it'll take time for the site to get a full correct catalog up and running but I expect it to work beautifully once more to allow anyone to track their catalog there. You can find this website at the Animal Crossing Community page. They also have forums there which are very active right now in anticipation of this game. Granted, the general age of the members of that site fall a bit lower than here, but I've found over all the years I've been there that the discussion is still mostly pleasant and easy.

Lastly, I want you all to enjoy the music from this new game or any of the games, whenever you want. The following site will allow you to hear the "Xam" or "Xpm" music that would naturally occur in your life right now as if you were in the game. You can select from any of the Animal Crossing games and the music will continually loop until the hour changes. It's pretty cool. You can find that page here. It's by default at the City Folk music.

So again, everyone enjoy this game! Enjoy this discussion! If you're interested in being negative about the title, just find your way to a different thread for that because this thread is about the experience and meant to bring the community together during the launch of one of the most community driven games Nintendo offers.

Say hello to Kapp'n, cause we're about to make it into town on June 9th.

(One more quick note; Keep an eye out for the game's review, which I will write sometime in the end of June probably.)

New Catches for December:

Dung Beetle- 5PM-8AM (The last bug! Hurrah!)

Oarfish- Ocean, All Day, Huge shadow
Pond Smelt- River, All Day, Small shadow
Sea Butterfly- Ocean, All Day, Tiny Shadow
Stringfish- River, 4PM-9AM, Huge Shadow

No new dives this month. By my reckoning this leaves two fish left, and one dive to complete the collection!

Finally passed all of Gracie's tests, and the big store opened (is this the final phase?). I caught a Pond Smelt, Sea Butterfly, and a Tuna (can't believe I didn't find this yet) this morning, but it hasn't snowed in my town yet...when does snow hit town? Because I have my Festive Tree up in my room and I'm ready to collect all of the snowman's furniture (again)!

I got the Cornucopia I think, and a few pieces of the Harvest set. It was a bit tedious, but a welcome change.
Posted: 12/01/13, 19:46:54

Wait, tuna? My information is saying Jan-March!

Posted: 12/01/13, 21:20:53
@Shadowlink I've bought quite a few pieces and I should be able to get the rest from a friend, if you still have that candy I can order the set from the catalogue for you to fondle.
Posted: 12/01/13, 22:31:35
@Mop it up

So I give you candy and then I get to fondle things.

Sounds legit .

Yeah we gotta set up a trading visit for the weekend. I have a bunch of stuff to sort out with Fink too.

I netted it Sunday morning at work when I was looking for an Oarfish (which I found last night, took about 20 minutes). Still need a Stringfish and a Dung Beetle, then I'm all set for December...and for fishing and diving until March.
Posted: 12/03/13, 18:57:27

I just need the dung beetle....and I guess the stupid tuna.

I think we have to wait until we get some decent snow for the beetle.
Posted: 12/03/13, 21:09:23

Bah, snow has fell on my village, just none stuck...not sure when it will stick around.

So...Stringfish. I can catch it at night, correct?
Posted: 12/03/13, 21:17:54

Yeah I think so. It's when I caught mine at least. Look for the bigass fish. It's pretty rare though.
Posted: 12/03/13, 21:23:41

Cool. I think it's supposed to rain/snow today, so that might help my chances.
Posted: 12/03/13, 21:30:29
...aaaaaand the Stringfish is in the books. So now I just have one fish, one dive, and one insect before I've caught everything. Now my art collection...ugh.

I also managed to pay off my house expansion last night, so just the one room to go now! A few trips to the island should pay my house off in full.

Alright I'm in chat watching the VGX stream.Anyone wanna come on and do AC trading either now or after?

I have a spare Basic Painting to trade for artwork I don't have (Fink), and a pile of candy for Mop.

EDIT: BTW, does anyone have a couple of black cosmos or purple pansies they can spare? Those are the other two hybrids I need besides the blue roses.

My town said a blizzard is coming tomorrow! Woohoo!

I'm working on the Jingle set now too. All I've gotten so far is the wallpaper, carpet, and the Jingle TV. So basically, ten pieces until I have the whole set...which I'd like to get (along with the Snowman set to have two winter-themed rooms).

Also, my final expansion is coming tomorrow. So 598k bells until I'm debt free!
Posted: 12/09/13, 23:46:57

How do you get that?

I'm going to get that cool looking Ice set. I've got about a dozen snowflakes clogging up my inventory to trade.
Posted: 12/10/13, 01:59:36
Blizzard is pouring down this morning. I'm guessing I'll catch a Dung Beetle tomorrow morning.

How do you get the Jingle set? T&T Emporium is selling pieces of it. I'm guessing what I don't get from there, I'll have to get from Jingle.

The Snowman set is from building perfect snowmen.

Hey friends, without telling me what exact critters I'm missing, can someone tell me if the things I still need to dive for are available during this season:

Posted: 12/11/13, 04:34:26

Gyah. It's all second floor furniture now! I never venture up there to see what they've got. I missed all the Thanksgiving stuff last month.

Must remember to look.

I'd help, but I don't have access to my list right now! If Ludist can advise....?
Posted: 12/11/13, 06:09:53
I caught the Dung Beetle this morning, so my insect collection is complete, as is the museum's! Now to make snowmen...

You missed the one on the far right until July (and it's not on the island). Two of the remaining three blanks can be caught now all day long, and the other remaining blank comes out in March (which we're all waiting on).
Posted: 12/11/13, 16:08:46

Ugh. Guess I won't be completing my first Animal Crossing catalog anytime soon.

Thanks for the help, though! If you don't mind, I'll post images of my fish and bug catalogs tonight (so nice this can easily be done with Miiverse) and you can counsel me on what I'm missing there. Nice to be able to do it without having the identities of the creatures spoiled.
Posted: 12/11/13, 16:42:05
So on my breaks at work, I'm playing this today. I made a snowmam instead of a snowboy and I caught five snowflakes and she gave me an ice wall. She said I could catch more snowflakes for her (not sure if she meant today or just before she melts in a few days).

If it helps, the two you can catch right now are fairly big and move modestly fast (not impossibly fast).

And yeah, post what you need help with. Between Fink, Shadowlink and myself, we've caught everything there is to catch aside from one dive and one fish.
