Animal Crossing: New Leaf Review (Nintendo 3DS) (9.7)  by

Animal Crossing... I still remember getting up early before heading to my high school classes just to see what Tom Nook was selling that day. This game series has always held such a dear place in my heart. I think it has to do with the fact that heading to the land of Plaisant, Tranquil, or other towns of mine always being a great escape for me. Making Bells, filling my catalog, and fishing in the ocean were always points of peace for me. While I've been very public about my discontent with AC: City Folk, I have a new-found hope once more for New Leaf. From all the information that has been dished out due to the game's release already in Japan, and Nintendo pushing more information through Nintendo Directs, I am confident this game will be a fresh take on a classic and comforting idea.

The game released in North America on June 9th, 2013 and released in other territories shortly after.

Please use this thread for all discussion on the game. If you would like to make trades or visit towns, please use the specific Animal Crossing New Leaf Trading Thread for further assistance. It makes more sense to keep this focused on the gameplay and game discussion while leaving bartering out of it. There are no Friend Codes this time around for Animal Crossing, which is a blessing! Many of us have already befriended ourselves via the 3DS Friend Codes Thread thread. That thread will be where we continue to befriend each other and trade 3DS IDs for the sake of visiting each other's towns.

Many many years ago I discovered a wonderful Animal Crossing website which has a great catalog feature set up. Now, the new game will mean it'll take time for the site to get a full correct catalog up and running but I expect it to work beautifully once more to allow anyone to track their catalog there. You can find this website at the Animal Crossing Community page. They also have forums there which are very active right now in anticipation of this game. Granted, the general age of the members of that site fall a bit lower than here, but I've found over all the years I've been there that the discussion is still mostly pleasant and easy.

Lastly, I want you all to enjoy the music from this new game or any of the games, whenever you want. The following site will allow you to hear the "Xam" or "Xpm" music that would naturally occur in your life right now as if you were in the game. You can select from any of the Animal Crossing games and the music will continually loop until the hour changes. It's pretty cool. You can find that page here. It's by default at the City Folk music.

So again, everyone enjoy this game! Enjoy this discussion! If you're interested in being negative about the title, just find your way to a different thread for that because this thread is about the experience and meant to bring the community together during the launch of one of the most community driven games Nintendo offers.

Say hello to Kapp'n, cause we're about to make it into town on June 9th.

(One more quick note; Keep an eye out for the game's review, which I will write sometime in the end of June probably.)

Everything going well

Well slight change of plans cause the area I wanted to place lamp posts is apparently too close to the flower bed. So I relocated them a bit, starting building my fountain in its definitive spot, then will check tomorrow if I can place a couple of benches with the layout that I want. Better not run into other unforeseen problems!

@VofEscaflowne So was that ritual to rid your town of Hazel or to summon her there? lol.

My town is now working on a light house, yay. i feared it as one or the other like in the wii one but it's apparently not. So i have the windmill and now a light house being made. Just got police station too : D

To get rid of her... but at the same time, I want to keep her. She's just a hilarious animal that everyone hates on so I want to keep her for that alone

anyone know if you plant a fruit tree next to a Wisteria Trellis will the fruit grow? I'm landscaping the right side of town again.

@wickedsymphony I love the new demon you have in town now, Naomi. What circle of hell did you summon that red-eyed baphomet?

Any tips for planting my first bush? Can they be dug up? Are they limited in placement?
07/11/13, 22:30
@DrFinkelstein

You can dig them up and I'm not sure about their limitations when it comes to growing them. I tried planting a tree right next to it and the tree still grew. I imagine they don't need to have one free space on all sides like trees do then.

I've had a couple bushes die, and I haven't quite figured out why yet. I think...you can plant a tree next to a bush but not a bush next to a tree? Also, my bushes planted right by the edge of the land died.
07/11/13, 22:40
@VickiL

Well some spots can't grow anything at all so maybe that's why that bush died when planting it next to another. I could've sworn there's 2 bushes next to each other on my island... I haven't been there in quite a while though so I don't remember for certain. I'll have to make more trips as I need more medals to get bushes to fill up my garden anyway.

@DrFinkelstein
I planted a garden in my yard and used red hibiscus as a border design that also reduces the chances of the garden being trampled. There were a few spots in the square where the hibiscus died, tried replanting, and died again. I'm not sure why they didn't grow in those particular spots. There didn't seem to be a visual indicator and they weren't next to anything other than hibiscus.

I made a small hedge in front of the Mayor's office to encourage snails, 5 Hibiscus plants all in a row. Right next to each other without issue.

Part of me wants to build a hedge maze, but I'm not sure I have the space. Or patience.

@vids

I have a pattern in my orchard where stuff doesn't grow at all. So it's like

o o o
o x o
o o o
o o o
o x o
o o o

Of course x is where stuff doesn't grow. It seems to repeat in a few areas too. It was like this back on the GameCube and I believe Wild World too.

I have three bushes in a row right in front of my house. Great place for snails. They can grow in rows or right next to each other, but when I plant one right next to a tree or a community project, it dies. I wonder if it would have survived if I had it planted and full grown before starting the project.
07/11/13, 23:26
@VofEscaflowne

Do you do them straight up and down like that?

I did (on Gamecube, Wii) stuff like

_T_T_
T_T_T
_T_T_

A LOT.

@Mr_Mustache

This seemed to work for my orchard, but I've since spaced them out a little more since it makes things pretty crowded.

I'm now a big fan of this arrangement...

o _ _ o
_ _ _ _
_ _ _ _
o _ _ o

2 spaces between each tree in a grid-like pattern. It's not as efficient fruit-wise, but it works great for paths!
07/12/13, 00:48
@TriforceBun

I might try that... I mean, I don't really have a town great for paths like this because my shit's so spread out. but I can imagine where a path could be in a spot or two. With all the buildings around, I feel like the amount of villagers is almost slightly too many, or perhaps the town is just a little too small. An extra "screen" in the x and y would have done wonders.
07/12/13, 01:08
@TriforceBun

I had my Wii place set up pretty awesome, and fruit sections were pretty rad. Putting trees too close always left me with problems growing though. I'm sure you don't have that with the 2 spaces around. Its tough to type out exactly what stuff looks like on here to make it work best. I also had stuff like..

_A__A__A
A__A__A_
__A__A__
_A__A__A
A__A__A_

Those were pines!
07/12/13, 01:24
@Mr_Mustache

Yeah, I think this is the closest they'll get and still grow right.

So I've taken to attempting to post messages on a Japanese Animal Crossing community to get the rarest 7-11 DLC from them. I think I may have an addiction...
