Animal Crossing: New Leaf Review (Nintendo 3DS) (9.7)  by
Animal Crossing... I still remember getting up early before heading to my high school classes just to see what Tom Nook was selling that day. This game series has always held such a dear place in my heart. I think it has to do with the fact that heading to the land of Plaisant, Tranquil, or other towns of mine always being a great escape for me. Making Bells, filling my catalog, and fishing in the ocean were always points of peace for me. While I've been very public about my discontent with AC: City Folk, I have a new-found hope once more for New Leaf. From all the information that has been dished out due to the game's release already in Japan, and Nintendo pushing more information through Nintendo Directs, I am confident this game will be a fresh take on a classic and comforting idea.

The game released in North America on June 9th, 2013 and released in other territories shortly after.

Please use this thread for all discussion on the game. If you would like to make trades or visit towns, please use the specific Animal Crossing New Leaf Trading Thread for further assistance. It makes more sense to keep this focused on the gameplay and game discussion while leaving bartering out of it. There are no Friend Codes this time around for Animal Crossing, which is a blessing! Many of us have already befriended ourselves via the 3DS Friend Codes Thread thread. That thread will be where we continue to befriend each other and trade 3DS IDs for the sake of visiting each other's towns.

Many many years ago I discovered a wonderful Animal Crossing website which has a great catalog feature set up. Now, the new game will mean it'll take time for the site to get a full correct catalog up and running but I expect it to work beautifully once more to allow anyone to track their catalog there. You can find this website at the Animal Crossing Community page. They also have forums there which are very active right now in anticipation of this game. Granted, the general age of the members of that site fall a bit lower than here, but I've found over all the years I've been there that the discussion is still mostly pleasant and easy.

Lastly, I want you all to enjoy the music from this new game or any of the games, whenever you want. The following site will allow you to hear the "Xam" or "Xpm" music that would naturally occur in your life right now as if you were in the game. You can select from any of the Animal Crossing games and the music will continually loop until the hour changes. It's pretty cool. You can find that page here. It's by default at the City Folk music.

So again, everyone enjoy this game! Enjoy this discussion! If you're interested in being negative about the title, just find your way to a different thread for that because this thread is about the experience and meant to bring the community together during the launch of one of the most community driven games Nintendo offers.

Say hello to Kapp'n, cause we're about to make it into town on June 9th.

(One more quick note; Keep an eye out for the game's review, which I will write sometime in the end of June probably.)

@DrFinkelstein

No idea if they have special items but they are releasing the game a day early and I'm sure the'll be quite a few streetpasses

Why yes you can. This bed is sold at a cost of 4200 Bells. I will buy one for you if you would like. I also spoke too soon about the grass, looks like my town is showing much more brown that a day ago. Hopefully it restores quickly. Wish I understood a lick of Japanese to get more out of this game currently. Can't wait for the NA release to really run my town, I have 3 million Bells waiting too be transferred.

@gtarrant

That would be awesome! Please do buy one for me and I will definitely get you those bells as soon as I can. Actually, make it two if you can. One for my girlfriend. I'll pay you a rounded 10,000 bells if you want, but it sounds like you don't need the interest.

@vids

God I wish I lived in NYC again. I'd gladly take the ol' trip from Astoria to Rockefeller. I picked up a Pokemon game from there when I lived there in 2009.

@DrFinkelstein

it takes me around an hour to get there via mass trans from nj but I'm considering doing a family trip out there to make it more eventful for my wife who's really excited about the game. haven't hit the city in quite some time myself. Last time may have been the Discovery Harry Potter exhibit.

I really need this game in my life.. One more week of work then summer break. I'm almost done! Once break hits, I have three days off before animal crossing.

Two days after animal crossing is e3, and a day after e3 I leave for the Bonnaroo music festival. That's the 13th to the 16th, when I get back on the 18th I am buying the brand new Mac book air that gets announced the day after animal crossing. And two days after I get my Mac book air I start teaching summer school. And when that's done I go on vacation to florida for two weeks and when I get back pikmin 3 will be out. And three weeks after pikmin three is out I return to work because summer break is over !!

Woosh. I've a busy summer!
05/31/13, 16:30
@Scrawnton i feel you. this spring semester @ work I felt like I was having a flashback to the previous year with the FE game club, only with Fire Emblem Awakening. I decided to put all gaming on the side as it'll just be more games I can't beat. Most of the time I'd just check streetpasses.

Animal Crossing sounds like the perfect game for a busy schedule though. You don't need a heavy time commitment to open it up and do a few activities in it. Its the most cathartic game series I've played (Flower comes close). Perfect for the stress from a hectic schedule.

Good luck during the summer. I'll see you around town when you get a chance.

@vids oh I will be playing animal crossing nightly once I get back from that concert festival on June 17th
05/31/13, 21:21
I can't wait either. Animal Crossing is the ultimate comfort game. Oozing charm. That's why I've always named my towns after words like tranquility or peaceful (not always in English though). This time I'll be naming my town the Italian word for Firefly, Lucciola. Fireflies have a special significance between my girlfriend and I.
05/31/13, 23:17
@DrFinkelstein hmm Tranquility or Peaceful + Firefly, have you thought of naming your town Serenity?
05/31/13, 23:33
@vids

Hmm, that's a good idea. Now though I feel like I'm sold on the Italian for Firefly.

Lucciola (pronounced Lou-cho-lah) is pretty nice sounding.
06/01/13, 05:52
I now want to name my town something relaxing.. How about Concordia, the Latin word for harmony (with heart)
06/01/13, 05:59
@Scrawnton

That's awesome! ... except for the 8 letters rule I believe is still in effect with this game.

Concord? perhaps that instead?
06/01/13, 06:09
I just got some new swag from Fortune Cookies, lot's of Nintendo related items in this game. Can't wait to get my hands on the NA version.
06/02/13, 19:34
@gtarrant how many play coins do fortune cookies cost and how many can you use a day? I've 113 coins in my 3ds...
06/02/13, 20:23
The current Nook shop has 2 fortune cookies and they cost 2 Play Coins per.
06/02/13, 21:01
@gtarrant

In a way I consider that all to be kinda spoilerish, just because I'd be amazed to see it for myself in game (Midna's Hat that is). But it's good to know that there's a lot of content we don't know about.

This Fortune Cookie thing is cool sounding. I need more things to spend my often maxed out coins on. I'm sure the amount you can get might grow as Nook grows, but can you clarify what happens with these? Do they always just contain rare items or are they sometimes empty?
06/02/13, 23:30
@DrFinkelstein
I have had 2 that just gave me pieces of furniture. Everything else has been Nintendo related. Never have I not got anything from them.
06/03/13, 00:38
@gtarrant

Have you ever had duplicates?
