Animal Crossing: New Leaf Review (Nintendo 3DS) (9.7)  by

Animal Crossing... I still remember getting up early before heading to my high school classes just to see what Tom Nook was selling that day. This game series has always held such a dear place in my heart. I think it has to do with the fact that heading to the land of Plaisant, Tranquil, or other towns of mine always being a great escape for me. Making Bells, filling my catalog, and fishing in the ocean were always points of peace for me. While I've been very public about my discontent with AC: City Folk, I have a new-found hope once more for New Leaf. From all the information that has been dished out due to the game's release already in Japan, and Nintendo pushing more information through Nintendo Directs, I am confident this game will be a fresh take on a classic and comforting idea.

The game released in North America on June 9th, 2013 and released in other territories shortly after.

Please use this thread for all discussion on the game. If you would like to make trades or visit towns, please use the specific Animal Crossing New Leaf Trading Thread for further assistance. It makes more sense to keep this focused on the gameplay and game discussion while leaving bartering out of it. There are no Friend Codes this time around for Animal Crossing, which is a blessing! Many of us have already befriended ourselves via the 3DS Friend Codes Thread thread. That thread will be where we continue to befriend each other and trade 3DS IDs for the sake of visiting each other's towns.

Many many years ago I discovered a wonderful Animal Crossing website which has a great catalog feature set up. Now, the new game will mean it'll take time for the site to get a full correct catalog up and running but I expect it to work beautifully once more to allow anyone to track their catalog there. You can find this website at the Animal Crossing Community page. They also have forums there which are very active right now in anticipation of this game. Granted, the general age of the members of that site fall a bit lower than here, but I've found over all the years I've been there that the discussion is still mostly pleasant and easy.

Lastly, I want you all to enjoy the music from this new game or any of the games, whenever you want. The following site will allow you to hear the "Xam" or "Xpm" music that would naturally occur in your life right now as if you were in the game. You can select from any of the Animal Crossing games and the music will continually loop until the hour changes. It's pretty cool. You can find that page here. It's by default at the City Folk music.

So again, everyone enjoy this game! Enjoy this discussion! If you're interested in being negative about the title, just find your way to a different thread for that because this thread is about the experience and meant to bring the community together during the launch of one of the most community driven games Nintendo offers.

Say hello to Kapp'n, cause we're about to make it into town on June 9th.

(One more quick note; Keep an eye out for the game's review, which I will write sometime in the end of June probably.)

How does that broad stay in business?!! She's hemorrhaging money!

Hah, I took a picture of a very similar amount earlier this week; sold an inventory or four full of turnips worth 507 apiece. Good times!

I can only imagine Reese sells them for even higher at another town, because otherwise those poor alpacas would be on the street.

I'm kind of feeling... good but not great about this game. I remember loving the first one, and the DS one was fun but kind of more of the same (never played the Wii one) so I didn't play it as much.

I know there is a lot new here, but I'm having trouble defining what my actual goals in this game are. Build up my house? Add a bunch of stuff to my village? Do I actually care about this stuff? Doubly so, do I care about this stuff enough to keep fishing / collecting fruit / playing the turnip market / etc. to get the bells to do it? Hmm.

The island seems to have a bunch of new stuff, but it's also kind of annoying to me that say, from the point when I decide I want to play an island mini-game to the point where I'm actually playing it minutes have passed. It's not easy to just jump right into, there are all of these trips and loading and this and that.

I'm trying to remember what the driving force for me was back when I played the first game. I think a lot of it had to do with the fact that other people were playing on the same copy I was, so I could jump into town and see what changed since the last time I played. And there was like a mini "competition" between me and the others playing to get the coolest stuff / etc. Online helps with this a bit, but since we're all living in different towns it isn't quite the same.

That's the beauty of Animal Crossing: you set the agenda, not the game. Do you want to fill your town with all kinds of Public Works projects? Do it. Want to fish on the island all day? Nobody's stopping you. Want to win big or lose it all by playing the turnip market? Start Sunday and keep an eye on prices. Want to build relations with neighbors? Write them letters and run errands for them.

It's an open game where you set your goals. There's no end-game goal (you see the credits when you listen to a K.K. Slider song).

@Zero

I kind of felt the same way, but then Guillaume re-tweeted a post about an absolutely crazy dream town that made me want to pick the game up and get back to playing so that I can finish my dream suite and visit it.

Speaking of, where is Guillaume? Haven't seen him on the forums lately.

Can Club LOL open any day of the week? It's been like 4 days since I gathered all those signatures...
06/28/13, 00:50
@DrFinkelstein

It takes five days for Club LOL to open.
06/28/13, 00:52
Seems like pointless waiting. But at least I'll get it by tomorrow.
06/28/13, 03:10
Finally caught a char today (2 to be exact) and can't wait til tomorrow since i got a castle exterior. Next is tiara.
Please ignore the Jersey Shore tan ,lol

Was it by the ocean waterfall or cliff waterfall? It's the only thing I'm missing that I can still get. I don't have much time!!
06/28/13, 04:53
it was ocean waterfall for me.

man, I feel so poor compared to you guys... I only manage 50-75K from nightly trip!

I think club lol opens for me tonight, and I STILL haven't tried the Dream Suite yet... I feel like I'm just grinding for money right now. :P
06/28/13, 05:29
@DrFinkelstein One was waterfall to the ocean and one was in the river leading to that waterfall, Don't just think they're in the waterfall, cause i caught first by luck in the river. But vids said i needed a pic and that as the 2nd one ,lol.

Club LOL is awesome. My friend Luna came over and we danced and chatted for like an hour. It's fun to rush the stage and go WILD just as the pyro goes off and the gyroids cut in!

Aw, I forgot to take pics.

I need to get a full house in there for some antics.

Caught a snail this morning and started on the Resetti Surveillance Center. Club LOL also opened today!

@ploot

I got online last night, but none of my friends had their gates open...

@DrFinkelstein

I've caught Char at both spots. It's a lot easier to find them when it's raining.

Hey, it takes Shrunk longer to earn bells because he eats all the fruit he picks up. The man can't help it!

I wanted something cute for my first emotion, but I got anger. This game...knows me well.

@heliumsky
You get 5,000 bells just for updating your Dream once a day. All it requires is an internet connection and like three minutes.

I got to play some last night. My friends asked me to bring some perfect fruit for them to sell, and I convinced them to play island games with me, but they only wanted to play two because they were busy. Most shockingly, they asked Kapp'n to not sing on the boat ride! Proof that my real-life friends are totally lame.

I've been begging my townspeople for more community projects, and Bud asked me to build...a caution sign. So I tried putting it right next to his house, but Isabelle disapproved so I put it across the river from his place, right next to the cliff. I was complaining to the spouse about these mediocre projects I'm putting up in the hopes of making the town better and getting better suggestions, then I'll take them down. He said people will leave my town saying, "This place really went downhill after they took down that caution sign. Now I keep running into Bud."

@ludist210 you got the resetti thing? what is it?

as for me i got my castle today woot : D

@wickedsymphony

I've got Resetti's Surveillance Center. It's where you can randomly find Resetti. It also means he starts showing back up if you don't save your game. Like the old days. On occasion you can visit him and I believe you get something if you visit him enough. I've seen him twice.
06/28/13, 21:23
Does anyone have any trash, rotten fruit, or spoiled turnips that I can have/borrow to catch an ant and a fly?

@wickedsymphony

Nice castle!

To get Resetti, you need to quit without saving. The next time you boot up, he interrupts Isabelle. It's a Public Works project after that.

@wickedsymphony

How the heck do you get this? I've been trying to buy it for days, but Nook always says my house isn't big enough. How big does it need to be??
