Animal Crossing: New Leaf Review (Nintendo 3DS) (9.7)  by

Animal Crossing... I still remember getting up early before heading to my high school classes just to see what Tom Nook was selling that day. This game series has always held such a dear place in my heart. I think it has to do with the fact that heading to the land of Plaisant, Tranquil, or other towns of mine always being a great escape for me. Making Bells, filling my catalog, and fishing in the ocean were always points of peace for me. While I've been very public about my discontent with AC: City Folk, I have a new-found hope once more for New Leaf. From all the information that has been dished out due to the game's release already in Japan, and Nintendo pushing more information through Nintendo Directs, I am confident this game will be a fresh take on a classic and comforting idea.

The game released in North America on June 9th, 2013 and released in other territories shortly after.

Please use this thread for all discussion on the game. If you would like to make trades or visit towns, please use the specific Animal Crossing New Leaf Trading Thread for further assistance. It makes more sense to keep this focused on the gameplay and game discussion while leaving bartering out of it. There are no Friend Codes this time around for Animal Crossing, which is a blessing! Many of us have already befriended ourselves via the 3DS Friend Codes Thread thread. That thread will be where we continue to befriend each other and trade 3DS IDs for the sake of visiting each other's towns.

Many many years ago I discovered a wonderful Animal Crossing website which has a great catalog feature set up. Now, the new game will mean it'll take time for the site to get a full correct catalog up and running but I expect it to work beautifully once more to allow anyone to track their catalog there. You can find this website at the Animal Crossing Community page. They also have forums there which are very active right now in anticipation of this game. Granted, the general age of the members of that site fall a bit lower than here, but I've found over all the years I've been there that the discussion is still mostly pleasant and easy.

Lastly, I want you all to enjoy the music from this new game or any of the games, whenever you want. The following site will allow you to hear the "Xam" or "Xpm" music that would naturally occur in your life right now as if you were in the game. You can select from any of the Animal Crossing games and the music will continually loop until the hour changes. It's pretty cool. You can find that page here. It's by default at the City Folk music.

So again, everyone enjoy this game! Enjoy this discussion! If you're interested in being negative about the title, just find your way to a different thread for that because this thread is about the experience and meant to bring the community together during the launch of one of the most community driven games Nintendo offers.

Say hello to Kapp'n, cause we're about to make it into town on June 9th.

(One more quick note; Keep an eye out for the game's review, which I will write sometime in the end of June probably.)

Welp, Redd's in my town today and has exactly one real piece of art...

I wonder if that's how it always is.

I've donated 2 paintings so far, both of which were bought from villagers. I think I'll stick to statues from Redd for now even though it seems both are fake

@kgtennispro
That's what I heard. One real, three fake.

Oh man....I've been wanting a villager finder ever since the Gamecube version, and they finally added one!

When I first saw the megaphone I thought it would be for online, but NOPE. You hold it up, say the villager's name you're looking for, and they'll respond letting you know where they are!

Now I want one so that I can scream out Hazel's name and how she needs to trim her unibrow then hide behind a tree.

Gonna be a slow day in Clifton. Nookling's Junction is remodeling today, so not much to buy, and I paid off my 198k house remodel last night at 8:15 so Tom Nook couldn't remodel it today. Bummer...but my dream suite is halfway paid off. I suppose I could run to the island and finish the job. Plus I'm wondering what other rare items might appear there.

@ludist210

Ya, your town is quite nice! I'm not sure if it was your connection or the AC servers themselves. I kept waiting for people to jump back onto my BFF chat list after our disconnect but it never happened. Me thinks something with the overall online service happened.

OK, I've probably posed this exact question before but, it's crunch-time on my game decision making so, humor me...

Can you fine residents of AC:NL post a list of online interactions I can have with friends (and randoms I guess) in this game?? I've seen pictures of some of you going out on boats and doing... stuff... so what exactly could I expect?

Can we help each other complete our museums by trading fish, etc?
Can we create custom clothing and give it to each other to wear in our separate games? Custom paintings?
Are there like mini-games online?
Can we visit each other's houses/towns?

Sorry, I'm an AC n00b and I'm trying (for the 30th time) to decide if I should get this gaaaaaame! The more stuff you can list, the more likely I'll want to opt-in!

@Abdooooo

If you're disconnected from it, you have to manually turn it back on. Did you check that?

@NinSage

-You can visit other players' towns through WFC. This is the main way to interact/trade with people. I don't think you can trade stuff without visiting people in person.
-You can trade all furniture, clothing, bells, tools, etc. Simply drop the item you want to trade on the ground and have the other guy pick it up.
-You can visit other players' houses while in their towns, but you can't mess with their stuff (unless they give it to you of course).
-I'm pretty sure you can give custom designs to players by putting the design up in the Able Sisters' store in your town and having the player get it.
-You can also put a price on your stuff at Re-Tail and have another player buy it.
-You can send players letters and gifts while in their town via their postal service.
-You can choose to "Best Friend" some users on your friend list. Best Friends get a notification when they're online, and also can speak to (text) each other instantly even when they're each in their own town.
-You can visit other players' islands by visiting their town and all talking to Kapp'n. Once there, you can fish, bug hunt, etc. In addition, there're a bunch of mini-games you can play for special Tortimer medals, the currency used on the island. You can do all this with up to 4 players.
-If you buy the Club Tortimer item (at the island), you can also visit random online players' islands and play the mini-games with them! This also gives you access to their islands' items--useful for collectors since each island only has 4 items a day.
-You can chop down trees, steal fruit and otherwise alter someone's town...but it's considered very rude!

What you cannot do:

-You cannot trade items online without visiting another player (in other words, you both have to be online at the same time).
-You cannot trade "catchable" items (fish, bugs, seafood) to other players.
-You cannot donate to a foreign town's museum.

More crazy dream town shenanigans!

1300-0108-1523 (dunno the name, apparently it's a crazy one though)

EDIT: Just realized I never posted my FC in this thread: 1934 - 0656 - 8996

@TriforceBun

thanks! that was really cool of you!

hmm, so you can't trade catchable items, but if someone was looking for something, and you knew it was currently in your town you COULD be like "hey, come over here! we'll find you one!" and then you bring them there and THEY catch it, right?
Posted: 06/20/13, 20:08:32
@NinSage

Hm, like if a fish appeared in the water and you invite someone? I'm not exactly sure if that'd work since I think fish locations respawn when someone arrives. If that was the case, they'd be better off trying in their town since each town has the same pool of fish/bugs, with the only change being the time of day/year.

Of course, if someone was already in your town and you saw a shark or a rare bug, you could tell them about it so they could walk over and fish it up, I suppose.

Picked up the limited-time offer furniture from Best Buy today. I guess I could have just re-named my wireless router at home and gotten it there, but...meh. There's a Best Buy on the way to my office, so I just swung in real quick, did the download, and left.

A couple of the Best Buy employees there asked what I was doing, and they were honestly surprised when I told them what I was up to. Neither of them had a clue that this offer was available.

Regarding custom patterns, after you've made friends with the quiet Able sister, you'll get access to the computerized sewing machine that will let you create and download QR codes of designs. There should already be patterns showing up all over the internet by now. I'm not sure yet if you can display patterns in someone else's town (on their photo op displays or display boards). I can't figure out where to build a one!

Haha you hung the TV on the window?

@VofEscaflowne

No, it's on the floor next to the window. I wish I could hang my TV on the wall...

Ah okay, I see the base now. Kind of hard to make out.

Yeah, Savannah came and installed new carpet and wallpaper the other day...not sure how I feel about it, but better than the defaults, that's for sure.
