Animal Crossing: New Leaf Review (Nintendo 3DS) (9.7)  by

Animal Crossing... I still remember getting up early before heading to my high school classes just to see what Tom Nook was selling that day. This game series has always held such a dear place in my heart. I think it has to do with the fact that heading to the land of Plaisant, Tranquil, or other towns of mine always being a great escape for me. Making Bells, filling my catalog, and fishing in the ocean were always points of peace for me. While I've been very public about my discontent with AC: City Folk, I have a new-found hope once more for New Leaf. From all the information that has been dished out due to the game's release already in Japan, and Nintendo pushing more information through Nintendo Directs, I am confident this game will be a fresh take on a classic and comforting idea.

The game released in North America on June 9th, 2013 and released in other territories shortly after.

Please use this thread for all discussion on the game. If you would like to make trades or visit towns, please use the specific Animal Crossing New Leaf Trading Thread for further assistance. It makes more sense to keep this focused on the gameplay and game discussion while leaving bartering out of it. There are no Friend Codes this time around for Animal Crossing, which is a blessing! Many of us have already befriended ourselves via the 3DS Friend Codes Thread thread. That thread will be where we continue to befriend each other and trade 3DS IDs for the sake of visiting each other's towns.

Many many years ago I discovered a wonderful Animal Crossing website which has a great catalog feature set up. Now, the new game will mean it'll take time for the site to get a full correct catalog up and running but I expect it to work beautifully once more to allow anyone to track their catalog there. You can find this website at the Animal Crossing Community page. They also have forums there which are very active right now in anticipation of this game. Granted, the general age of the members of that site fall a bit lower than here, but I've found over all the years I've been there that the discussion is still mostly pleasant and easy.

Lastly, I want you all to enjoy the music from this new game or any of the games, whenever you want. The following site will allow you to hear the "Xam" or "Xpm" music that would naturally occur in your life right now as if you were in the game. You can select from any of the Animal Crossing games and the music will continually loop until the hour changes. It's pretty cool. You can find that page here. It's by default at the City Folk music.

So again, everyone enjoy this game! Enjoy this discussion! If you're interested in being negative about the title, just find your way to a different thread for that because this thread is about the experience and meant to bring the community together during the launch of one of the most community driven games Nintendo offers.

Say hello to Kapp'n, cause we're about to make it into town on June 9th.

(One more quick note; Keep an eye out for the game's review, which I will write sometime in the end of June probably.)

Why not sign up for a (free) account?

@Deerock69 Can you do that? With the 3DS closed?

What might happen is I could get an extra copy down the line. Some of these games have been going on sale so much. Retailers are hurting to get people in stores. I think I got both Miracle Mask and Pokemon Black 2 for $15 each.

Bad news...

I just went to Kal-El's town, and added him as a best friend.

When I went back to my town, I could send him messages, but when I went to write a letter he doesn't show up as a possible recipient

Awwwww.

I think I might get the game anyway. Still on the fence!

Wait, you can't message people? Confused...
06/09/13, 19:09
I swear this was possible in City Folk... We need to figure this out 100%.

I can't believe this is out already, still playing Luigi's Mansion and Donkey Kong, too many games!

You can message people, but you can't mail them letters (which would be useful to send presents on someone birthday or something).

But as Fink pointed out, it WAS possible in City Folk...so if they removed it that's really disappointing

Do you think that feature was possible because of WiiConnect24? Did ACWW have it?

I liked being able to mail gifts though. I guess I took it for granted. :(

@heliumsky

In that case, I would hope this would work like SwapNote. We can send messages that way for people to receive at their leisure. Then the item/gift is merely a piece of code.
06/09/13, 20:10
Ack. My K-Mart didn't get it today, apparently.. Anyone else have a similar experience?

@DrFinkelstein

Heli and I played City Folk a lot. I know we could definitely send Presents back and forth. Maybe you can send letters / presents to people from THEIR town, as you do with other "other town" animals? What do you guys mean by "messages?"

And I sent Roy a PM..

I pre-ordered from Amazon yesterday (through the NW Amazon shop ), so I probably won't have it until tuesday.

Hey, I'm back! Life sucks sometimes (school + work & some other crap), but vidjagames don't! E3 hype and all that!

I was trying to save some cash for the rush that goes from August until the end of the year, but I caved. Excite! Fruit trading and such!

You can donate multiple fish/insects/anything at once in the museum!

Such a small thing and yet it makes me so happy

After a couple time issues last night (had it for noon instead of midnight, then 1am on the 8th and not the 9th) forced me to restart twice I've got my town up and running. I've got my town tune changed, need to work on my flag (it's just a blue square =/ ) and then probably see if I can manage to get some artist juice flowing and make a shirt.

I've got cherries in my town, but still working on trying to clean it up and get a lot of money. Already paid off the down payment on my house/tent thing and got 20,000bells for tomorrow. Really, really need an axe though. I WANT TO CHOP DOWN TREES!

I got one of those fortune cookies but only got Varia Suit Boots.

@kgtennispro

One of the many beautiful refinements of this game.
06/09/13, 22:44
Maybe you could make it so that a message arrives on a certain date? I haven't been able to play with it yet.
06/09/13, 23:01
Well, I got the game and I'm about to dive in.

This does seem like traditional Animal Crossing polished to a perfect shine... I'm sure I'll get $35 worth of entertainment out of it.

I am ready for the Wii U Animal Crossing in a couple years, however, and I hope it's a substantial reinvention. Think of the technological boost, the Wiimote+, the Gamepad, the internet multiplayer and Miiverse options. Nintendo has made a mint off of this franchise, and it's time to pour some of that money into R&D to bring it into the modern age.

Until then, this is definitely an acceptable product. I'm sure I'll see a lot of you around in your towns!
06/09/13, 23:42
Wait, is there no way for multiple people to live in the same town on the same cartridge? It seems like you can have different people start different towns, but you can't live in the same town? I guess with the whole "you're the mayor" thing it wouldn't make sense, but still... a lot of the fun of this game was seeing what the other people playing did to the town while I was away.

And it seems like people can only visit your town (not the copy town, the real one) while you are playing? But if the person is using the same cartridge as you, then it is impossible for them to ever visit your real town?
06/10/13, 00:03
@Zero

You can still have four people on a cart. Just one person is mayor. What's making you believe you can't have multiple people in town?
