Ignoring the question of whether it's a good financial direction for Nintendo, would you personally like to see the company focus some of their development resources on making games for smartphones?

It depends what we're asking.

Would I like to see original ideas by Nintendo on a smartphone? I wouldn't say no to that if it were a game optimized for a smartphone and the price were right.

Would I like to see classic Nintendo games on smartphones? No, because trying to play Super Mario Bros. with touchscreen controls wouldn't work IMO.

This.

I doubt I would care. I do not use my phone for much gaming.

No, not really. I can't think of anything Nintendo-made that I'd like to see with a touchscreen alone.

That's because they haven't MADE IT YET! We're not talking about porting things, we're talking about new IPs or new ideas with old IPs!

Not a chance.

Nintendo belongs on Nintendo.

"I want to play Mario on my phone!" Too bad, get a Gameboy or 3DS.

It's a little thicker than the average smartphone, but it's smaller (length and width) than, say, the Galaxy S3 and Note II.

Though girl jeans are different. Women on the board, I have no idea how you function with such small pockets on your jeans.

Purses, man!

@Xbob42

Mrs_Mustache's phone is very close to 3DS thickness. Yours looks closer to an "old" iPod?

XBOB has an otterbox
Mikey likes it: Bro-fist.

What the heck is an Otterbox?!

But I can already play Mario on my phone. Emulators FTW! Works surprisingly well. But I'd rather play something specific for phones made by Nintendo. I also don't subscribe to "Nintendo belongs on Nintendo," that's just weird fan entitlement that Nintendo is some special flower that would somehow be betraying its fans by branching out. Sounds like old SEGA fans.

@Xbob42 Well, yeah. I can't think of anything new I'd want to see either.

@Mr_Mustache

An Otterbox is a smartphone case that's thick and pretty life-proof. I could throw my phone at the floor and it wouldn't hurt it.

@ludist210

That was a nightmare up there making that work. I have no idea what was going on..

And maybe that is what Nikki has, though I've never heard the name for it.

That's the fun thing about Nintendo, they're good at making things you never knew you wanted.

@Xbob42 No one has any empirical evidence of any of this stuff. I'm telling you what is mostly likely Nintendo's mindset though, and I appear to be correct, because they have not supported non-Nintendo platforms with games and do not seem to be any time soon.

Whatever the case, I honestly don't know what kind of pants you guys are wearing, because it fits great in mine, and I get to play a lot of AWESOME games on the go. I mean, for my tastes, I don't see what I'd get out of phone games from Nintendo, considering that I'm already carrying my 3DS everywhere anyway. Rather they make more stuff for that and I could play it with a real digital pad and buttons.

I remember reading awhile ago that during the '80s, some companies approached Nintendo with making a port of Super Mario Bros. to other platforms of the time. Considering many companies released their games on every system back then (including Atari and Coleco supporting their competitor's systems), this didn't seem as far-fetched of an idea as it would today

Eh, Nintendo excels at leveraging their own hardware, that they build specifically for games. I personally think nothing good can come out of a platform like the iPhone, it's just junk for gaming.

You can't make a beautiful flower grow in shit!

Er... you know what I mean.

Actually, now that I give it some more thought, seeing some Game & Watch games on a phone would be nice. I think they're perfect for picking up and playing for a few spare moments when waiting for something. Any other developer aside from Nintendo could easily make a competent clone however.
05/08/13, 01:29
@Guillaume Well, you're more than entitled to your opinion, but I think Nintendo could do plenty good. :p Kirby Canvas Curse is practically already an iOS game! For most phones though you'd want something with slightly less precision required, though.

I just love the idea of a runner Mario game, but not an endless one. Bowser's chasing Mario so he can't stop, complete these levels without turning around! There could be so many great gameplay ideas. Most runners suck, but some have had really great concepts. I think a Mario one would knock it outta the fucking park. Tap screen to jump, always be running, and tilt a bit to the left to slow down, but not stop. Could be GENIUS. Warioware could be great, too!
05/08/13, 01:32
I don't care one way or the other. I think they would make an absolute fuckload of money and I think there are millions upon millions of people out there that would pay top dollar for decent ports of older classics.
05/08/13, 01:36
Nope. 3DS is my favorite system I want them to keep their focus on that.
05/08/13, 01:38
No, let them keep their games on a controlled environment that they create from scratch. Supporting other pieces of hardware could lead to troubles.
05/08/13, 01:51
I am not answering as my option isn't present :P

I really want Nintendo to make a Smartphone, but with buttons. Even if it only has a NES pad but a Nintendo phone would be fantastic. It would have it's own app store as well as a VC that lets you download NES and GB/GBC games. Touchscreen as well.

@Pokefreak911

It would have to be a Droid phone or something because I do not trust Nintendo to make a smartphone OS.
