Apollo Justice: Ace Attorney Review (Nintendo DS) (8.6)  by

I'm finally getting around to playing the fourth game in the Ace Attorney series, and it's pretty decent so far! Of course, this game doesn't star our beloved Phoenix Wright but rather newcomer Apollo Justice (not crazy about the name ).

The game plays like a pretty standard Ace Attorney game so far, with no major gameplay surprises. You have your trial portions and your investigation portions like before. You still examine your surroundings during investigations, talk to people, show them your evidence to get clues, etc. And in the trials, you still press witness testimonies, present the correct evidence at the correct portion of the testimony, and so forth.

After having gone through so much drama and story with Phoenix Wright in the previous three games and really coming to like him as a character, I feel like I'm still adjusting to newcomer Apollo and seeing what makes him unique, what sets him apart from Phoenix as a defense attorney. I really appreciate Capcom bringing back familiar characters to this game and seeing what's become of them as the years have passed by.

Who's played the game, did you like it as much as the Phoenix Wright games, or is it just more of the same?

Hey, I'm playing this game! It's fun so far!

I'm only on the 2nd case, but this is right up there with the rest of the Ace Attorney games, IMO. Fun cases, nice twists, good music, and an enjoyable cast. Good stuff!

We finally finished the game today. Aside from it being excruciatingly long, I still liked it. I still just don't like not being Phoenix, and this game cements the fact that I miss him even more. It was interesting to see him take the role he took in this game...but something just rubs me the wrong way a little bit when they try to make him the "cool, all knowing character." That's more of a Miles Edgeworth thing, no?

I always worry when games/characters I like start to age. I know it's probably easier for them to write stories about characters changing and evolving and getting older, but at the same time, I just want these characters to go on adventures forever. When they start giving you that sense of finality, it's kind of disappointing to me as a fan of something.

I kind of just want to see Indiana Jones ride off into the sunset and imagine that his adventures are never ending, you know?

You'd probably like Dual Destinies. Phoenix has some Mia-esque wisdom in him in that game, but he feels a lot more like the Phoenix of old than he does in AJ.

We played around with DD a little bit. I'm already disappointed that you don't even play as Phoenix in the first case. What a tease!!! They've made us wait so long to play as him again...why make us wait more? We're going to take a break from AA though I think. Too many cases in a row!
