Pandora's Tower Review (Nintendo Wii) (8.5)  by

Looks like this game is coming out on April 16th now. It's probably a good idea to move out of March with Monster Hunter, Need for Speed and Lego City all coming out.

I apologize for the self-promotion but the first part of our RetroActive discussion has been posted.

One of the elements that came up during our conversation that I hadn't consciously realized before is the idea that these towers are in a way, a post-apocalyptic setting. These beautiful places used to be lived in. There are mementos of people being there in the past, written notes about their work that also give a taste of what these places used to be for. I absolutely adore that stuff. I love when a game asks me to become an archeologist and piece together various fragments hinting at what went on in a ruined place. Resident Evil, Metroid Prime, and now Pandora's Tower.

The exact two games I tend to name drop when talking about the way Pandora's Tower lets you explore its backstory! It really is a thing of beauty, that type of storytelling. ZombiU has a similar way of dealing with the backstory, but there you've also got people who are around to talk to you about it to a greater extent, so it's not quite the same. Doesn't have the same impact, in my opinion.

I'll have to check out RFN! Yeah, that is pretty cool reading those notes about what those towers were being used for in the past; they make you go "Oh, that makes sense why such and such is designed that way!"

And speaking of self-promotion, I want to do some of my own: anyone who is interested, I would love feedback to my review posted back in May! (The link has been up there in the OP since then). I... have a feeling most were turned off by the wordiness perhaps?

Jesus, that glitch really makes the dawn and dusk towers a pain in the ass!

How do I avoid it?

I stopped at those towers. The game just wasn't clicking with me. So I haven't come across the glitch myself, but I did read about it in the gamefaqs forum. I still want to finish the game off, but I can't stop buying new games.

I guess I'll try to trigger that breakfast scene next time, like they suggest. Thanks!

I bought this game recently and intended to play it, but now I think I'll wait and see if anyone can figure out a surefire way to bypass the freezing glitch. I don't really have much tolerance for that kind of stuff.

I've finally finished the game! With the best ending at that!

I have no idea how to not trigger the glitch. I've tried the "trigger the breakfast cutscene" trick and it didn't really work. Let's just say I was glad to be finally done with those last two towers.

Pretty great game despite this.

@Guillaume

Are you glad to be done with the last two towers just because of the glitch or for other reasons as well? Because that's all I have left to do in the game.

Mostly the glitch. The towers clever and fun, though less fun than they should have been because of that glitch, which froze my game 4-5 times.

Finished this game up last night, it was pretty fun. It was an interesting premise, the story was pretty crazy and I appreciate that. Something about Elena chomping down on master flesh is weirdly satisfying. I especially enjoyed the boss fights which made creative use of the main character's chain attack. It felt like a blend of Monster Hunter and Zelda, with a bit of dating sim thrown in for good measure. I did think it dragged on a little bit, but the gameplay was fun enough to keep me going (though, admittedly it took me months to complete the game, playing on and off). I never experienced the glitch that was mentioned in this thread. Overall I'd give the game an 8/10, I enjoyed it more than The Last Story.

Put my game on hold. The same music in each Temple bummed me out.

Still, I absolutely love everything else. Needs to be a fleshed out sequel/spiritual sequel to this.

Seemed like the best of the Op Rainfall games to me. Was immensely impressed by Pandora's Tower. Atmosphere. Art. Design. Deep gameplay. The game had an old school Enix feeling from back in the SNES days. Loved that.

Pandora's Tower is being released on the Wii U eShop today, so I'm bumping this thread as a reminder that it's an AWESOME game!

And I do hope they fixed the glitch.

This game was always on my radar, and after reading through this thread, I think I'm going to have to go for it. I'd prefer to get it on a disc to save some GBs of disk space, but I can't seem to find a physical copy for less than $25 or so.

But what is "the glitch"?
08/13/15, 17:50
I don't even remember the details. Apparently according to the above posts, my game froze 4-5 times towards the end of the game.

Looks like Xseed has nothing to do with this digital release. I don't know if it makes it more or less likely that the glitch has been fixed...

Leanining strongly towards rebuying this. This game definitely holds a place in my heart.

My position on this game still hasn't changed: haven't played it until I hear about a workaround for the glitch. I guess I should check if anything's been found yet.

@Guillaume

I seem to remember having the same problem. I think I figured out some way to avoid it eventually, but it's been so long I don't quite remember.

@ludist210 I mean a 100% guaranteed workaround. Different people have said different things, some things that have worked for some people didn't work for others.
