Should Mario Kart open itself up to other Nintendo franchises? [poll]

Sure, bring on Nintendo Kart!  (17/34 votes)

We talked about this a bit in the last podcast. Smash Brothers is awesome in part because it has so many Nintendo franchises represented, but Mario Kart has always been Mario Kart. Would you want to see Nintendo open up Mario Kart to other Nintendo franchises? Or should Mario Kart stay pure Mario Kart? Or maybe something in between, where it mainly stays Mario Kart but brings in a few other franchises that fit (say, Kirby, etc.?)

Imagine this, except on Brinster and Samus in a little kart...

No, keep it with Mario characters. If Nintendo wants to do spin-offs with Zelda and Metroid, do those. Not every spin-off game needs to be a Nintendo character free-for-all.

EDIT: The only exception I'd make is with Donkey & Diddy Kong since DK is related to the Mario series. But Nintendo has already used DK in at least one MK game, so no need to change anything.

I don't care about purity. The crazier, the better. The more variety, the better. I mean, there are a lot of tracks in recent Mario Kart games that have almost nothing to do with the settings of any traditional Mario games. Cheese Land? Ribbon World, or whatever?

Either they should open the franchise up to all Nintendo properties or they should give us some Cheese Land platforming goodness!

Nintendo Kart would shake up the weapons system, as well. Double Dash style. Ooo, Double Nintendo Dash!

This is sort or not related but remember how people complained about Metroid Prime Pinball right after it was announced, and then it turned out to be simply a fantastic game. If Samus can play the part of a pinball certainly she can drive a Kart.

Also: Metroid Prime Pinball 2 please.

@Anand
Cheese Bridge is from Super Mario World!

Damn! I was hoping that I hadn't just forgotten the source.

How about Ribbon Road?
03/03/13, 00:18
@WrathOfSamus777 I thought that was Butter Bridge. There is a Cheese Bridge too?

I'm fine with it staying Mario Kart. The Mario universe is robust enough that there's still plenty they have to explore and keep things interesting, there's no need to bring in other franchises. I'd be okay with it existing separately though.

If Nintendo ever did consider the idea then I'm sure they looked no further than sales. Mario Kart sells way more than Smash Brothers so I'm sure they wouldn't want to do anything to risk lessening the massive sales of Mario Kart.

@Zero Cheese Bridge is the lower bridge after Vanilla Dome, Butter Bridge is the upper bridge.

@Mop it up If Nintendo did do it, they probably wouldn't change the name. Mario Kart + Friends. I dunno.
03/03/13, 01:35
@Zero I don't think the name is what's important. If the game had a lot less Mario in it then it wouldn't sell as well.
03/03/13, 01:42
I dunno I feel like it should be something thats in NL2 if its karts that just seems so corny to have them all in karts. I'd rather see Smash Bros Racing where like I said its not karts but they have all different ways to racing
03/03/13, 01:46
@Mop it up I don't know if I agree with that.

@Anand
@Zero
There is a Cheese Bridge and Butter Bridge in Super Mario World. I just looked it up on GameFaqs.

Ribbon Road looks like it's just from Super Circuit and not from a previous Mario game. I think most of the tracks have some tie to previous Mario games though.

@Zero Think about it. Mario is Nintendo's most popular franchise by a long shot. The only other franchise that can even compete in popularity is Pokémon. As much as we'd like more people to care about Nintendo franchises that aren't Mario, the reality is that a majority of people don't. So adding in other franchises into Mario Kart would only lessen sales.

Now if they made a Pokémon Kart, that I could see becoming hugely successful.

@Mop it up

That doesn't make sense.

If Mario is popular, then you'd get all the Mario fans PLUS the extra fans from the others. I don't se how adding other games reduces the amount of Mario fans buying the game.

I agree with Shadowlink.
03/03/13, 02:30
@Shadowlink
But hardcore Metroid fans (like myself) have absolutely no interest in driving Samus around in a go-kart. It doesn't fit at all with the Metroid universe. Keep it in the Mushroom Kingdom. It fits there.
03/03/13, 02:31
@WrathOfSamus777 I'm sure some hardcore Metroid fans do. Like me. Brinstar track with Brinstar music?

03/03/13, 02:34
@Zero
Enjoy I guess. I would be skipping it.
03/03/13, 02:35
@WrathOfSamus777 You would skip an entire Mario Kart game over this? Weird.
