BIT.TRIP Presents... Runner2: Future Legend of Rhythm Alien Review (Nintendo Wii U eShop) (9.5)  by

As this game is set to release next week, I figured we might as well start discussion now. Who else is excited? Will it be better than the first game? WHO KNOWS?!

Also, in a strange show of complete honesty, Gaijin just posted about the build differences. It kind of sounds like the Wii U version might be the best version? Unless you have a good controller for your PC? The PS3 version is missing some stuff and the Xbox 360 version has the worst load times, apparently.

The soundtrack is great, but it feels like every level is the same song, so it gets kind of old for me personally. I mean really depressing music like this, by the way:

It matches perfectly!

Runner2 seems to have a little more variety than the original, music-wise.

Okay, kind of off topic, but Zen Studios and Gaijin Games's Twitter account (BIT.TRIP one) tweeted each other about making a BIT.TRIP table for Zen Pinball

I am loving this game. I can't stop playing nor thinking about it. For now, I'm just going through the stages, I won't try for high scores until the patch is up. Going for a secret exit could decimate your high score as is, for example. It's fun enough just unlocking everything for now. I found a couple of bonus stages! I finished them both, however I know I missed a gold bar on one of them, but there's no indication on the level select screen that I missed it.

@Xbob42
How in the... you gotta turn up the sound, bob! The music in this game is wonderful and fits the gameplay perfectly.

@Zero
Dancing isn't based on rhythm though. unfortunately.

If levels have alternate paths, you may think you're missing gold bars but split paths have the same amount on each side. I don't think I've come across levels that I've collected them all yet know I missed one.

I'm still trying for high scores and once I feel I've done well on one, I just move on instead of trying to fit in more dance moves. I've gotten quite a few #1 spots on the leaderboard this morning!

What an awesome game! So damn addictive.

I'm doing the same thing!

@VofEscaflowne

I found an alternate exit last night that I'm pretty sure had about 20 fewer gold bars than the regular path.

Does anyone know what incentive there is to collect gold in the retro stages?

@Secret_Tunnel
I assume they count towards your overall gold bar total, but like I said, there is no indication of how many were collected, only completion.

Man, reading this thread is making me want to download the game now, even though I told myself I'd wait for the patch. At the very least, I'll wait until I'm finished with F-Zero.

Man I'm loving this game. This is how to make a sequel to RUNNER. They took what was an awesome but (purposely) limited game and just expanded it on so many levels, packed it with so much to do and see. I don't know that I like every new thing, but I like enough.

Dancing though... I think it's an ok addition and makes going for score a lot more interesting, but I really wish that it were implemented differently. Especially on the big GamePad my finger starts cramping after just a few minutes of going for high scores, because you can end up spamming the button a ton and it's in an awkward place. I understand Simba's comment about why just holding the button wouldn't be ideal, but I think that I would prefer that anyway. It would require a clear dance animation that is looped but from which you can tell just by where your character is in the animation when you can let go of the button. I think this could work...

And I still hate the bullseye thing, especially on the harder stages where I can spend like 20-30 minutes to finally nail everything in the stage just to miss the bullseye and have to do it all over again. Blah.

And the scoreboards combining difficulty levels annoys me. A part of me hopes that they realize this is silly and patch it, although I doubt that would happen, because it would throw off the current scoreboards so much and it might PO a few people.

@anon_mastermind It kind of is, in the sense that you can start to get a rhythm for it, but it still feels weird.

Hmm, I have two questions though:

A. Is there any reason to do the stages on easy other than maybe going for a high score on easy? I've been doing them first on normal, then hard, and I really have interest in going back and doing them all on easy if that's not going to get me anything.

B. I assume the retro stages add to your overall score, but otherwise is there any real point to them besides fun? And is there a way to track your scores on them? I don't really see one.

@Secret_Tunnel

Yeah the alternate paths are just that. They never seem to get you the total amount of bars if you take that route.

@Zero

A. Other than going for the triple perfect scores, then I imagine there isn't. Unless if it gets you an extra unlockable. I just play everything on hard right away.

B. Same as A I assume. There's no clear reason to do them unless you go ahead and do them all and see what it does then.

@Zero

I'm assuming that completing them all unlocks the final mysterious hidden character. There is one unlockable character in each world, there are five worlds, and there are six unlockable characters, so...

Runner was easily the best game of the Bit.Trip bunch. I wonder if this'll ever end up in physical form...

I'm gonna remap the dance button to another button so I can hit it more comfortably. Even on my 360 pad it's uncomfortable. But I love it, it keeps you looking for running stretches long enough to hit it without hitting an obstacle. Prevents the "perfect score," thing and allows more competition. I think it's great.

Can you remap the buttons on the Wii U? I looked but was unable to. I have to hold the gamepad at awkward angles everytime I play so that my cramping doesn't impede play.

Having played through the demo twice I've decided I can wait on this. Actually the demo probably wasn't great for people who had already played the original because it definitely didn't feel like there was anything new (although clearly there is from what you guys are saying).

But still, I've got plenty to play and it's not like the game won't be fun when I get around to it. And if I could get it for the $2.50 I paid for the original, all the better.
