So... here we are with a 30 cent game on the Wii U. I bought it expecting to be like yeah I remember this game, was fun at the time, but is now way dated. But you know what? F THAT. I still love this game! Just played through the first set of races. It's still a great game.

Haters can hate.

Why not sign up for a (free) account?

I actually enjoyed it too but is there no unlocks or any progress to do? It doesn't seem to track anything aside from best times.

This came out today?!?

Guess I know how I'm spending the rest of my night!

The only thing to unlock is the hardest difficulty. I don't remember what's available at the start, but I'm pretty sure you have to beat expert to unlock master difficulty.

I'm struggling with Silence...what's the best way to make tight turns?
02/21/13, 16:39
@ludist210

Lay off the gas and hit the shoulder button (L or R) for the power turn.

Bought this game last night and only got through the first two tracks before I had to leave. So many memories.

Lay off the gas through the turn, or let off, hold L/R, then throttle while holding L/R? I've been trying the latter method and that worked fine for the first four courses, but the turns are just way too tight on this course.

Also, I found remapping Boost to Y and Brake to A made more sense.

I bought it last night and played the first three tracks. I used to rent this game as a kid way back when it was new. This is still the only f-zero game i have ever played. Never touched the n64 or gcn games. But i am enjoying playing this again. The music is fantastic!

@Scrawnton

You're missing out man. This is good, but X is better and GX is even better than that. You should, at the very least, download X (1000 points) for N64. That was the first one I ever played and I adored it.

I'm amazed how much fun I'm having with this. I wasn't even planning on getting it for 30 cents, but I wanted the Club Nintendo survey and I sure am glad I did.

I didn't even realize there was a boost button until someone mentioned it in this thread.

The game can be pretty unforgiving. I got to the last level of the second league with one life and then there was this long jump that I seemed to hit well and I didn't make it across. Anyone know what I did wrong?

Also, does the game distinguish between "winning" the league and not? I came in first in 4 out of 5 races in the first league so I think I won, but it didn't really acknowledge that in anyway.

@Jargon

I got to that jump too and have no idea how to get across. I lost all my lives trying to make it. I guess you just have to make sure you not lose speed making that turn... or choose a faster vehicle.

And I don't think the game rewards you for winning much. As long as you qualify for the next race by being in a good position, then that's good enough apparently.

I wish the game kept track of which leagues and difficulties you've finished. I'm going through everything on easy first to get used to the tracks, but doing this doesn't seem to unlock or show any progress being made.

@Jargon

If you hold down on the d-pad you'll get more air on a jump, allowing you to cross that gap.

The way the game works is that you must finish in the top 3 on every race. If you finish in 4th or lower you'll lose a life and have to repeat that race. I don't think the game keeps track of overall standings for the league.

Haters be learners. This game hasn't aged a bit. Its only problem is that the sequels are way better
02/21/13, 18:12
Canon already said it, but holding backwards off a jump gets you more air. Something that I had forgotten and it took a few deaths to remember...

@canonj

Aha! Guess I could have found that in the manual. Anyway, it worked like a charm and I just beat the Queens League. Fun!

I wonder if Nintendo is aware of how many of these games I'd buy if they were even just $2.

This!

Pumping the gas will also help with turns.

Anyone else have to change the control layout? I had to map the leaning to the trigger buttons on the controller. Reaching all the way to the top just wasn't as comfortable. I also had to use my Pro controller. I need a tight grip when playing this game.
02/21/13, 20:09
@PogueSquadron

Agreed. I wouldn't have bought this for $8, but for $2? No brainer.

Thanks for the tips guys, I got past the first circuit and finished in first place each race.

Playing this, I'm finding myself making mistakes or trying to use features that have to do with the GBA version (banging the accelerator around turns, which actually kinda works, trying to activate boost by holding L and R). I think the GBA version destroyed my muscle memory for this one.

Man, Fire Field is tough.

What is the best time to press accelerate at the beginning of the race?
