*THE DEMO IS A DEMON, JUST GET THE GAME!!*

Welcome to the Monster Hunter 3 Ultimate thread! This will be our headquarters for coordinating our Hunts, sharing stories of war, and helpful hints for our brothers-in-arms, compatriots, friends, and neighbors. Please be mindful of folks' different definitions of "spoilers," and remember that not EVERYBODY played Monster Hunter Tri on the Wii, though everybody totally should've.

The "burden" of running this thread has been placed upon me but...I can't do it alone. I will lean on Maxi and others to help with the heavy lifting occasionally, both in planning things and also in feeding this thread. Please keep it bumped (once we get going). If you could, let us know if you're getting this game, WHEN you're getting this game, and what your aspirations are so we can get us situated in groups with likeminded people. Do you want to barely play this game? Is this going to be your new #1? The most fun with this game is had when you get to go out with a group of guys week in week out, so if we can find someone with a schedule similar to yours, you'll have the most fun with it.

@Anand

They should've just called it "Monster Hunter 3Diorama." Numericanteau!

Totes! Put it there, Portmanbreau!

What the hell?!
02/24/13, 00:39
@Anand

I just broke it with "3D Diorama." --Wait, how does this thing work? "What the hell" is right!

I'll have to check it out again to see if it's just my eyes fooling me. Maybe I'll compare the Wii and Wii U versions directly by changing inputs.

@Mr_Mustache

I still don't know if I'm buying it day 1. I've been playing Tri a lot recently since I'd like to get some last online quests in with my sister before they shut down the servers in April. She doesn't have a Wii U so I feel bad moving over to the Wii U version without her.

@canonj

Maybe you can pal her up locally on your 3DS? OR, OR, you can get her a Wii Uuuuuuuuuu!

I played the demo on 3DS several times and can finally say I get it. It really is monster hunting. Its not so much an open world experience as it is tracking, hunting, pacing yourself, and developing strategies of attack as the monster's AI and patterns change up as it gets weaker. The other monsters in the environment are just sort of background animals that may mind their own business, attack your guy, or attack the monster you're pursuing (?; I think I seen this happen). So far I really enjoyed what I played. Its the same gratification of battling something epic as Demon's Souls or Shadow of the Colossus. I really hate those loading screens and hope they are gone in MH4.

@Mr_Mustache

Well, I don't think she'd like playing on the 3DS since she's not really into portable gaming.

And I wish I had that kind of disposable income to give Wii U's to everyone!

@vids
Wait until an unexpected "someone" shows up while you're busy hunting a monster. Love "free hunting", as they call it.
02/24/13, 02:58
@vids

Yeah, they get involved sometimes. And other times, monsters can call other large monsters. Mostly though, in types of missions, the larger monster will chow down on a smaller one (like those gazelle type things) to strengthen themselves.

V was complaining earlier about those screens; when you end up in a new area by accident, take that time to heal up / sharpen your weapon.

OHHHHHH, it feels good to hear it from someone else.

I caved on Amazon's deal, figured I might as well since I want both versions. I'll probably move my GameStop pre-order $$$ to Watch_Dogs or TW101. Maybe Injustice: GAU.

So excite! Only 24 more days (i think). BTW, i'll probably go with the hammer as my weapon (class) of choice. Could change down the line, as I'm always experimenting (Hunting Horn is intriguing...), but I'll definitely start with my beloved hammer.

@Mr_Mustache

Cause it's the same as the Wii version which was what, 50$ at launch? And okay there's a few extras but then you have to pay more for a game that released a few years ago. HD ports on other consoles wouldn't launch at full price.

@VofEscaflowne

I feel like Tri was 40 or 30. I got the big package with the Black Classic Pro though.

--I don't work for Nintendo or Capcom, I don't know why I care. I gotta stop taking everything so personally.

Sorry you don't like it.
02/24/13, 05:30
We SHOULD work for Nintendo/Capcom! I mean, we're basically Monster Hunter PR...

Finally tried the Wii U version yesterday. Pretty slick. ALTHOUGH I'm not sure that I want to use the Gamepad. (!) I think that I'll stick with the Classic. It bugs me that you have to use the bumpers, rather than the triggers. And, I dunno, it just felt unwieldy, somehow. Maybe because of my hundreds of hours of muscle memory with the Comrade?

Also, the framerate and camera were going INSANE during the Plesioth fight. I don't think that they should've put Plesioth in the demo. What a weird choice. The camera lock-on is a great solution for the 3DS, but it was more of a hindrance when it came to the Plesioth. I'll probably stick with traditional camera control on the Wii U.

I'm institutionalized!

@Anand

Will we lose anything off GamePad? Is Black Classic Pro allowed? Hmm............ Help me think!
02/24/13, 20:30
@Mr_Mustache

In the Wii U demo settings it shows that you can use the new pro controller or the classic!

My hype for this is ramping up, and I can't help but think it has to do with the cross-play. The fact that I will be able to take my single player to the HDTV or on the go is really starting to sink in with me; I am going and doing so many things at any given point I often find myself with so few hours in front of the TV that cross-play solves. I may not touch many other of my numerous games for the remainder of the year (not that I will stop collecting them, however).
02/25/13, 00:53
@Deerock69

Does cross play require you to buy both versions of the game?
02/25/13, 02:00
@Abdooooo
Yes. There will be an app for Wii U and 3DS that allows you to transfer your save file to and from each device.
02/25/13, 19:26
@anon_mastermind

Gotcha and I'm happy that this type of functionality will exist. Hopefully they make it as seamless as possible.

Finally got to play the Wii U demo yesterday. Thanks to my sister-in-law, I'm without cable and internet access at home until the first week of March (yay for libraries). My wife and I got the hell out for the weekend to Gatlinburg, TN and I used the hotel's net access to get the demo. Almost didn't though, because the internet connection at the hotel was horrendous. Had to manually restart the download every 3 minutes for about 12 hours (Yeah, I wanted that demo that badly).

Anyhoo, it's friggin' awesome, and I think I'll add the Bow and the Horn to my arsenal along with my Switch Axe. Maybe Dual Blades too. The altered controls, at least for the Switch Axe, have made things tricky to get used to though. I'm using the Gamepad, which its features are nice, and I'll probably continue to use it into the retail product.
