*THE DEMO IS A DEMON, JUST GET THE GAME!!*

Welcome to the Monster Hunter 3 Ultimate thread! This will be our headquarters for coordinating our Hunts, sharing stories of war, and helpful hints for our brothers-in-arms, compatriots, friends, and neighbors. Please be mindful of folks' different definitions of "spoilers," and remember that not EVERYBODY played Monster Hunter Tri on the Wii, though everybody totally should've.

The "burden" of running this thread has been placed upon me but...I can't do it alone. I will lean on Maxi and others to help with the heavy lifting occasionally, both in planning things and also in feeding this thread. Please keep it bumped (once we get going). If you could, let us know if you're getting this game, WHEN you're getting this game, and what your aspirations are so we can get us situated in groups with likeminded people. Do you want to barely play this game? Is this going to be your new #1? The most fun with this game is had when you get to go out with a group of guys week in week out, so if we can find someone with a schedule similar to yours, you'll have the most fun with it.

Well I tried the demo. The demo really doesn't even attempt to give you any kind of tutorial, so I was stuck with skimming the manual. Can I assume the real game has a good tutorial mode, because that seems important for what appears to be a pretty complex game? Luckily I figured out how to sharpen my weapon on my own, but I had no idea how to control my little partners, do the camera move Mikey mentioned, etc.

I tried first with the giant sword and I died multiple times and ran out of time. Then I switched to sword and shield and took the bunny down in a little over 10 minutes. It was pretty fun, but the action wasn't as interesting as I'd heard, seemed to be a lot of repetitive swinging my sword, dodging, trying to get into a good position and then swinging some more. Obviously I can't judge the whole experience off half an hour playing the demo though.

How big are the teams online? I could see it definitely being fun doing this with friends but is everyone's involvement equal?

Yeah, the game has a pretty good tutorial and a weapon guide for each weapon that spells out how to use it properly. The little partners are there in single player only, you don't control them. They just provide a distraction.

The action can get repetitive, but it is very skill-based. You need to learn your attacks and the monster's attacks, and then pick him apart.

Online, you can play up to 4 players at a time, and the monsters have much more HP. You need a good contribution from each member to succeed.

@Jargon

The Real Game will probably have like 5+ hours of Tutorial. No, I'm not joking. V was complaining about gathering mushrooms ("Mushroom Hunter" he called it), which you'll find yourself doing on the late missions before the big fight. The Tutorial in Tri was REALLY GOOD and taught you the game VERY WELL. For instance, you can Trap a Monster in nearly every mission for credit, though the Demo really only focuses on Kill..though you're GIVEN Traps. Dig it?

4 people can go out at once. Keep in mind that the Monsters will be like 4 times as tough though (not sure if that is an exact number) in both Offense and Defense. When you create "Jargon," you'll be doing much better than you did yesterday, trust me.

@ludist210

I was always a roller / dodger. I wonder if the Duals would actually suit me better. Hmm... I'll tinker with it.

Rolling with Hammers and Long Swords for sure, but damn... I'm really interested in trying out the Horn, and especially the Bow!

Still, end of the day I'm all about smacking mofo's in the head until they see a sea of stars over their heads.

GOD I LOVE HAMMERS <3

So I tried the Wii U demo, and I've got to say that the framerate seems a bit off. I thought it was supposed to run smoother than the Wii version, but it looks choppier to me. Is anyone else seeing this?
02/23/13, 05:43
Tried the demo and... eh. I'm not sure if this game is for me. The combat feels very clunky and more than once I'd accidentally travel from one loading screen to the next cause the monster I was after wouldn't get out of that border. And that's just a demo.
02/23/13, 06:49
@Jargon

The rabbit was the easy demo. Don't judge the game based on that.
02/23/13, 06:57
I haven't tried the demo but when I get the game and system it will be for the Wii U first most likely.

As for weapons that I plan on playing with when I play I will likely play with these from Tri. Switchaxe and either the light or heavy bowgun. For the new weapons though I will likely add to that these weapons Dual Swords and Hunting Horn. Those I think will cover most bases for the monsters to start.

Also from what I am seeing in the demo and I believe it is also the case for the final game but you start with one of each weapon and an armor at the start of the game so you can use the weapons at the start of the game.

@VofEscaflowne

You bought Tri for $1, right? (Deal of the century!) How far did you get in that game? If you didn't like Tri then there's probably no reason to buy it on Wii U since it's the same basic game with a bunch of extra monsters and weapons. However, if you barely played Tri then I'd suggest putting a bit more time into it. If, after 10 hours, you aren't enjoying it then MH is probably not for you.

Also, I've been playing Tri quite a bit in the past couple months since I wanted to play it before the servers close forever. If you ever want to go online and do some early quests together let me know.

@canonj

Yeah it was mostly for the controller. I never really thought of getting into Monster Hunter but at that price, I gave it a shot. I didn't get very far so it was hard to really judge the game itself (played for about 6 hours I think) but the combat in the demo was just bad like I said. Maybe a demo isn't the best place to start but the technical issues or mechanics of it were just weird and I'm sure the full game is no different. Maybe I'm just going about it wrong, who knows
02/23/13, 16:16
@canonj
It feels smoother to me, its actually running at a higher frame rate. 45 vs 30 on Wii.
02/23/13, 17:17
@VofEscaflowne

What weapons did you use? Something like the Great Sword can be tough to use at the beginning since it's so slow (although it's my favourite weapon).

@anon_mastermind

No way is the demo running at 45 fps. I'd say even the 3DS demo has a more solid framerate than the Wii U demo. You can't see stuttering when you swing the camera around?
02/23/13, 17:33
@canonj

Long sword was it? It was still slow though probably not as slow as that great sword.
02/23/13, 17:51
@canonj
No, i found that you could especially see how smooth its running while rotating the camera.
02/23/13, 21:02
@VofEscaflowne

Yeah, but, that happens to EVERYBODY. And when that happens, its not like you gotta "do it all over again" or whatever. The monster is just as weak as when you left him, possibly more fatigued when you return in 2 seconds, and more often than not, you'll be traveling with 3 online folks who are still wailing away on the guy. Take that opportunity to heal up, eat some steak, and whet your weapon. Nothing to get peeved about. "It happens."

Demo woes all over again. *sigh*

@VofEscaflowne

Long Sword is like..its very long. Almost like a huge fishing pole!

@canonj

Hey! I just realized you're not on our list up there. What are your plans? Day 1?

@Mr_Mustache

It still boils down to not really liking the combat system though. Or maybe the demo just sucks... or I could try another weapon. But I imagine it's safe to assume that the game's combat is still a large portion of what makes the game what it is. Maybe it's just not for me. And why is the game even selling for 60$? I was at least expecting it to be a bit cheaper.
02/23/13, 23:31
Finally tried the game. But the 3DS version (on the train)! It was pretty cool. The new weapons are definitely going to take some getting used to. I tried the Bow and the Dual Swords. Not my ol' standby (Great Sword). The 3D was actually a pretty awesome effect, but VERY hard to maintain on a moving train. I turned it off eventually. Aced Bugs Bunny with the Dual Swords and ran out of time with the bow. I never really figured out how it worked...

The Monster Lock-on feature is a pretty neat work around (make sure it's selected, and then L will focus on the monster's current position), but I dunno if I really want to play Monster Hunter on a handheld. It was fun, but it feels more at home, y'know... at home. No offense, Grant.

@Jargon
Yeah, it isn't anything like a Devil May Cry or Bayonetta. The key aspects of the combat are the (not always interruptible) realistic attack animations and the locational damage. So getting, say, a solid hit on a monster's tail is actually pretty difficult and feels really good, although it wouldn't seem impressive to an outside observer. Also, single-player is less dynamic (but more taxing) than multiplayer, since the beast is usually focused on you.

I dunno. The full game is pretty emergent. All of the systems are simple, but they combine very well.

@VofEscaflowne

All the Wii U games are like $60, why would it be less? It is going to give anyone of us a MINIMUM of 300 hours of entertainment.

He's not in here (console thread), you can speak candidly.

The 3D was actually pretty awesome. It was just too hard to maintain.
