And here we are.

THE WORLD AS YOU KNEW IT CHANGED ON MARCH 19TH

Game IS NOT Region Locked: NA + SA CAN PLAY with Europe + Australia + Africa(?)

Sorry,
Asia!

*THE DEMO IS A DEMON, JUST GET THE GAME!!*

Welcome to the Monster Hunter 3 Ultimate thread! This will be our headquarters for coordinating our Hunts, sharing stories of war, and helpful hints for our brothers-in-arms, compatriots, friends, and neighbors. Please be mindful of folks' different definitions of "spoilers," and remember that not EVERYBODY played Monster Hunter Tri on the Wii, though everybody totally should've.

The "burden" of running this thread has been placed upon me but...I can't do it alone. I will lean on Maxi and others to help with the heavy lifting occasionally, both in planning things and also in feeding this thread. Please keep it bumped (once we get going). If you could, let us know if you're getting this game, WHEN you're getting this game, and what your aspirations are so we can get us situated in groups with likeminded people. Do you want to barely play this game? Is this going to be your new #1? The most fun with this game is had when you get to go out with a group of guys week in week out, so if we can find someone with a schedule similar to yours, you'll have the most fun with it.

There's not. You can "lock-on" to targets by pressing ZR. In reality, that just lets you tap L to swing the camera around to them.

So yeah, my frustrations last night were from dying. I wasn't prepared to do the quests that we did. I'll be honest Rob, I was hoping we'd farm some Lagi horns or something easy while my farm caught up to speed. I went into that last run we did with just five Mega Potions because I was out of honey.

Also, you were killing me with the double Wroggi quest...you kept jumping from one to the other when I was trying to keep my focus on one at a time. Target cam, man!

I didn't leave because of it though. Zerah was fussing a bit and Laura had already gone to bed. That added +10 to my husband skill and +15 to my father skill.

Real lock-on might kind of kill Monster Hunter. Also, it might make it difficult to chop off specific parts. The target camera is a good compromise. Although I never use it.

@Graptakular
Yeah, I'm around Chicago, but I don't have the 3DS version yet. Get a Wii U!

@Mr_Mustache
Yeah, but do you actually chart out your own tree?

...I still don't have a fire weapon.

Fiddle with the panels before switching to off-tv play. Any panel that ISN'T set on the touchscreen will appear on the TV, and hopefully, on the small screen for off-TV play. I got tired of looking down to see my health, so I switched it to appear on the tv by replacing that panel with the Shakalaka's health bars. I also made my items appear on the TV.
Lou, you changed my Monster Hunting life! I could NOT figure out how to get my health back on the screen for the life of me. Which has probably been the cause of 90% of my faints to this point.

As for the new monsters, they had to run out of cool animals eventually! I do like the crazy new powers, though.

I can't wait to fight an evil dolphin.

Am I missing something or is there not a way to lock onto monsters? That's pretty frustrating.

If you're talking like Z-Targetting, like Ocarina of Time? You don't want to do that. Really. Often, you'll be RUNNING or getting out of the way or something. Keeping your nose pointed in the direction of something charging at you on fire? ...You don't want to do that.... You'll get used to the system.

@ludist210

Oh, well, yeah, we can do those -any- time you want. It actually isn't THAT often that we get guys on the same HR-Level there at the same time. I made 0 progress that night. I hope that doesn't sound selfish at all, but I sat there helping you and Lou with your stuff hoping you'd catch up; Lou got his, and then we failed yours and you BOTH left. I was stuck holding the bag..and had nothing to put in it. Bleh.

Again, I think you alone have a better shot at Horns. When do you want to play again? We can do out "whenever." Really. Let me know, and I'll go.

--Out of Mega Potions?! Brother, why didn't you say something?! Oh my gosh, Lou and I could've hooked you up, or you could've just bought some new ones from the counter for "not much." Buddy, don't just sit there silent, haha.

Double Wrogs; I *HATE* off TV play. I can never tell what is going on, I'm COMPLETELY lost without the "map in the lap," and I can't see anything "far away." I wasn't sure exactly which one you were working on when I got there. Generally, when we're fighting a guy (myself, Anand, d'Artagnan, etc.), and another joins the fray, we'll fight the guy that came TO us instead of pursuing the other one. That goes QUADRUPLY for water monsters who move to land. In order to type w/ Off TV stuff, I gotta basically hope nothing hits me to do it. What a pain. And I couldn't talk-talk then either.

And if you're talking about "being in the same room, fighting the same guy," we pair off on that stuff a lot, too. We don't generally get SEPARATED (like, different Areas), but someone might work a Rathalos and the other on the Rathian, unless someone (Kenny, Cryojin) Dungs them to leave. Again, I'm making assumptions on what people are expected / expect to do, so I guess I'll apologize for that. Gotta remember, I've hunted with a lot of these guys way more than you, and that is FINE. Just..when I'm out there with Anand, I don't even think I really need to say anything, we just kinda -know- how the other will react. That shouldn't be taken as an offense, its just a byproduct of hours upon hours of communications.

Another thing I couldn't type out: don't ever feel bad about Fainting -OR- heading for cover to Heal yourself. It happens to everyone (the Fainting), and we'd (and you'd) much rather have you leave an Area for 10 seconds to drink a Potion or something. If you gotta run back to camp for whatever, run back to camp. Stuff happens, brother. I think I did that last night with you guys; Rathalos quest? He set me on fire and cornered me so I jumped off the cliff? If you gotta do something like that, do it. Plus, you'll feel like Harrison Ford in The Fugitive when he does a Peter Pan off the falls. Bonus.

In closing, "don't get upset" about stuff. Those chances to do an Urgent (with only NW'ers) is there briefly. Gotta take it when you can get it. I was hoping we'd get you both up there, and then you guys could do HR4 Harvest Tours before our next meetup. Solid stuff there for ya. I need Lagi stuff still; how is next week / tonight / tomorrow night for you? I think I gotta finish Mana tonight, and we might be going to Canada tomorrow for Nikki's birthday weekend / Casino action. Not entirely sure. I'm on Tuesday Night, guaranteed.

@Anand

I have it charted out in my box. I've written nothing down, but I have it set up so that my top row is Bone stuff (in order of branch), the middle one is Steel stuff (same), and the 3rd row is my Ancient Weapon (FINALLY, YES!! Never got S&S in Tri), my Stone-thing weapon, and my Bnahabra weapon that is brand new this game.

@Anand

We're fighting an evil bunny now, its only a matter of time.
04/28/13, 00:32
@Mr_Mustache

Got it. I don't need any more Lagi stuff...got it all offline earlier. Now my complete set makes me awesome...and very vulnerable to fire. That's excellent, given my HR3 Urgent is in the volcano...

It's kinda dumb that if we do a regular quest that we both get marks for it, but if we do an urgent, only one guy gets the mark.

I'll be around most of the rest of the weekend, and I should be on Tuesday after Zerah goes to bed.
04/28/13, 00:56
Awesome. If we get a good crew together, maybe we can knock it off tonight? I'll be up til midnight at least.
04/28/13, 03:14
@ludist210

Is it kinda dumb? I always kinda liked that. Its like..YOUR TIME to prove yourself, or something, even though its the same guy. Better that you know that than find out the hard way, right? Way back when (in Tri) before we knew, we had somebody initiate both Quests in a row because he had the most money. Uh oh..

@TheOldManFromZelda

I don't know if I'll be on tonight, or when. Watching NASCAR / working until about 11, and then I'm not sure what my night with Nikki has in store..
04/28/13, 03:43
I'll be home in a little bit, cleared for some MH.
04/28/13, 06:21
@Mr_Mustache

Still kinda dumb. It's not that I didn't have the money (because I have plenty of Zenny), it's just that once I got it, I thought we could both knock out the Urgent and get it. Blah.

Crafted three more axes last night. The Ground Dasher (which will become something awesome), the Dragonmaiden Axe (+100 poison damage on top of its 598 attack) and the Dios Axe (874 attack, +220 slime).
04/28/13, 14:21
I love slime weapons. Even though I'm not quite sure how to use them.

Anyway, yesterday's hunts were fun. We attained victory after some really embarrassing-ass defeats. The worst team in the world somehow pulled through again!

We're like the Bad News Bears of Monster Hunter.

I agree about Off-TV Play. It's definitely a compromise.

Lou's Dual Swords are badass. He was destroying that Qurupeco with parts from another kind of Qurupeco. That's kind of like cannibalism, or something.

@Mr_Mustache
You and your tree! I ended up with a fricking Barroth Loader! I might have to turn to the evil empire (Google)...

I'm tired.
04/28/13, 18:36
Ludisto, I'm around now, but VERY briefly. Like..minutes. (Update: Leaving online now; sorry. We'll meet again soon.)

@Anand

Don't go to Google! I'll probably craft Gunlances "for fun" just to make sure you're doing what you should be, or something.

Edited: 04/28/13, 20:53
Actually @Anand, I was using a slime dual blade crafted from that terrible Brachyfidiyuaisyios. In the few times we've beaten it, I got enough parts to make it.
04/29/13, 02:50
Anyone playing tonight? I wanna try out my new pro controller.
04/29/13, 04:02
@anon_mastermind

Are you around on Tuesday night at all, Mikey? The Mrs_ and I spent our day at Niagara Falls / The Casino. Turned $100 into $250, and all of our money spent at Clifton Hill attractions was replenished in about 30 minutes of Roulette. SOLID.

Did you get out tonight at all?
04/29/13, 09:44
@anon_mastermind

If you play with the pro controller, do all of the maps/health bars/ etc. show up on the tv? I'm thinking about switching to the Pro controller for my MH needs, because I play for very extended period of time, and the Wablet's battery isn't up to snuff sometimes.
04/29/13, 13:49
Okay, so my Brachydios Axe (Dios Axe) is sick. That plus my Lagi armor helps a TON. I can take down the Nibblesnarf without using a single potion or first-aid med. The Lagiacrus (I need another plate for a weapon upgrade) is easier to defeat. When I'm doing 800+ damage (and an additional 200+ slime damage) in a swing, that helps. Plus I'm pretty sure I've got an affinity boost going on...

Need a Nibblesnarf Claw (to upgrade my recently crafted Ludroth Axe) and a Lagiacrus Plate (forget which weapon this one is for, but it's for a weapon upgrade). Got Cha-Cha back, so now I have both Shakalaka on my team.
04/29/13, 16:49
@Mr_Mustache
Tuesday night... yeah should be good. After hockey, so at 10pm-ish.

@TheOldManFromZelda
I didn't get to try it last night because apparently after you boot up the game with the gamepad, there is no way to switch the Pro controller to be the main controller? So frustrating.
04/29/13, 18:59
I just "finished" the single-player mode. By which I mean, I beat the monster that signified the end of 1P in Monster Hunter Tri. But he ain't the final boss of Ultimate!

I hate fighting that guy, by the way. He's annoying.

Oh, cool. I was just reading up on Gunlance techniques and Slime damage, and, apparently, slime works the same way it does for Brachydios. If you hit the same spot multiple times, you can cause an explosion. So the Slime Dual Swords are super-powerful, because they get so many hits in. And the more Slime weapons you have, the more explosions you can cause. (I was using Slime, as well.)

@TheOldManFromZelda
If you're on Dynamic, you have to drag them off of the Gamepad to the trash, just like you would normally.

@anon_mastermind
You can switch it (and toggle to off-TV mode) from the Options menu on the home screen, Mikey.

I guess you could theoretically play off-TV with a Pro. I've never tried it, though.

@ludist210
I feel like the Shakalakas are a bit less powerful now.

@Anand

Really, they're just bait at this point. I can roll and avoid okay, but if the heat's off me, I can slash quickly.

Also yeah, sliming the bad guys = awesome. Every few hits I'm creating an explosion that slows even the biggest monsters down for a second.

I'm done with all of the five-star Village Quests. Woo!

@anon_mastermind

Awesome!, sounds good. (If you beat me online, make sure you password protect the room "zero" works well, otherwise Adam shows up and makes everyone uncomfortable. ..He's like that Skeleton Whale on Bubble Bobble when you're running out of time.)

@Anand

Interesting Slime note..

@ludist210

Not sure where I am exactly offline. Its a bunch of stars, but I'm pretty close to where you are, above or below.

Do you know when you're online next? Anytime late? I could potentially play on Tuesday Afternoon at like Noon, 1p, etc.
Need notice though, I'm not ready early for nothin'!
