Hello, true believers! Welcome to Negative World's newest RPG-centric Club Hub, springing off the heels of the Fire Emblem Club. Way back when, Nintendo Power introduced a monthly walkthrough / in depth Role Play Game section (right around the beefiest SNES RPG era), but since they aren't around anymore to use it, Negative World will bring it out of the ashes, dust it off, and roll with it (two things of note: #1, this is not in reaction to Nintendo Force Magazine at all -- I know that because I thought of it in the shower this morning, so THERE; and #2, I just looked up "Epic Center RPG" on Yahoo, and there is apparently another RPG-based site that has that, ugh. I guess we're looking at a "Ghostbusters" / "Real Ghostbusters" thing now... Whatever..).

For anyone who grew playing SNES RPGs, and were a fan of them, they surely resonated to the point where they still hold office as some of your favorite games of your entire videogame life, systems, generations, and decades later. The NW Epic Center (run primarily by myself, with the aid of some special friends occasionally) will help to expose some of those games that didn't quite get the recognition they deserved, and also to relive some of the greatest games EVER as we play through them again -- together -- and open up a whole new dialogue on these lost treasures.

Next up..

Chrono Trigger is held by many (myself included) as The Greatest RPG of All Time, pun not intended. It is a benchmark title in the genre, and even after 20 years the game is discussed daily and held in high regard, even in the face of juiced-up, HD "masterpieces." Is simpler sometimes better? Sure, but we're not talking "Dragon Warrior" simple here; we're talking 16-bit perfection at its finest. I'm personally a bit worried about pursuing this game once more; it's been a long time since my last jog through it, and I'm afraid I might have the rosiest pair of glasses that any shot of nostalgia could ever produce. We find out later this month, for better or for worse. (C'mon, it's gonna be fine -- we're talking Chrono Trigger here!! THE BEST, JERRY, THE BEST!!)

Sunday, August 30th marks the start of Week 1 (if you prefer to start your own quest AFTER Sunday, like Monday, or Tuesday, or Wednesday, thats fine!). Golden Sun ran 6 Weeks. GameDadGrant will be our DUNGEON MASTER for this one, and we figure the playthrough to run about the same length. Less than two months. I'm told the total quest should last you between 20 and 30 hours.

See ya soon!!

@Mr_Mustache

Some pieces of equipment protect against Flash, among other things. The Night Pendant (found in Moonside and can be bought later), the Sea Pendant (found around where you are now), Star Pendant (good luck! This one's a 1/128 item), Earth Pendant (can be bought later), and Poo's Diadem of Kings found in Lumine Hall's dungeon.

@TriforceBun

I had just switched off of what Ness had there. I think I traded for it with the Tenda guy? I got the Hall of Fame bat, too, which is a "downgrade" from the Casey Bat? What should I be using?

@Mr_Mustache

Pretty sure you get a good bat in the Underground Tenda Village (near the dinosaurs, etc). Just don't use the Casey Bat!

Well guys it has been a fun two months but we are on the final stretch. After collecting the 8th and final song, Ness finds himself in the strange world of Magicant, a world inside his head. What will Ness discover here? You'll know when you find it.

So thanks for for joining us on this playthrough. Those of you who played it for the first time (except for Stache) I hope you had as great a time with it has I did back in '95 and please talk more about this game. Particularly on the game thread and read my review of the game and see how you feel it goes with your experience.

EarthBound Epic Center

Week 8: The Final Road

Goal: Beat the Game

Point of No Return: After you give Dr. Andonuts the Meteorite piece for the Phase Distorter and rest, do not go into the Phase Distorter until you are absolutely certain you are ready to go. Otherwise you won't be able to go back. So any grinding or item collecting you need to do do that until you feel adequately prepared to face the final area.

Optional Challenge: Keep a Flying Man alive through all of Magicant; You can also attempt to collect the other 1/128 drop items from week 8 before the point of no return; Collect all of Poo’s armor before the point of no return (if you haven't); Collect Ness’s 1/128 drop weapon in the final area against Bionic Krakens, good luck with that one

Convenient Grinding Location(s): Fire Spring Cave/The Past

Finished the game this morning. I could see more of the flaws with it this time around than when I played it back in 1995, but I still loved the game.

Finished last night sans the Gutsy Bat. Spawning Bionic Krakens takes too long even when you know where to find them. My save is at the point of no return, so I'll go back sometime to get it since I have all of the other 1/128 equipment (including the Goddess Ribbon for Paula, dropped by the Ghost of Starman infrequently).

EDIT: ALSO, there is a 1/128 piece of equipment just for Paula in the Point of No Return: it's the Goddess Ribbon. It drops from the Ghost of Starman. You can also get this in Onett when you're going back to the Meteorite crash site. That's where I nabbed it.

I am at the Point of No Return. Can you copy a Save File? I can't imagine me liking this game enough to try again for the 1/128's later, but yeah. Kinda soured on that stufffffff.

Did find all of Poo's stuff though. Like to have a guy in clothes, ya know?
Posted: 10/21/13, 20:56:36
@Mr_Mustache

I think you can copy save files from the File Select screen. I'm pretty sure you can.

I'm all but about to give up on the Gutsy Bat, but I've never gotten it before...I'd like to. It's the only ultimate anything I don't have on this file. However, the level 99 final sequence was a lot easier than I expected it to be. Only Jeff died once, but that's because he was literally getting hit with everything Pokey was dishing out.

I love Paula's reaction if you answer "No" to her question after the final battle. Try it!

@Dark Weres

I've never had the heart to...

@TriforceBun

She just "escorts" you...even though Ness is still at the front of the party.

Just finished. Magicant was the best area since Fourside, the final battle was fantastic, and I liked the ending. I would say this week was the best since Fourside.

Thanks for coming up with the idea of Epic Center, Mustache. Thank you for hosting, Chris and Tbun. Earthbound has been so much fun. Not only will I look back at it with fond memories, but I'll also be reminded of the good times I've had at NW. As sappy as that may sound, it's true. I'm kind of sad that it's over, and I don't think I've ever said that about a game before. I look forward to participating in EC again in the future.

@Hero_Of_Hyrule

Glad someone also gets out of it what I get out it. Thanks for the kind words, HOH. Love to have you back!

I once again have failed to complete an Epic Centre. Granted I was going through the end of school as well as...well Pokemon this past week.

@Hero_Of_Hyrule

Yay! Congrats, and I'm glad your experience was a good one, both in-game and in this thread.

EB's ending always leaves me smiling.

Oh yeah, I completed the game BTW, in case that previous post of mine wasn't clear.

@TriforceBun
Reload, and try it! She's not one to take no for an answer!

@Dark Weres

Sorry I missed it!

Week 7 complete. Just one week to go. I'm only about three days behind; that's not so bad.

I had to giggle...I was listening to someone practicing Wind Waker HD while playing, and the moment Ness stood up after finishing Magicant, I heard the Zelda "you got an item" jingle.
